Sonali Bendre returns with Mr and Miss Television

Madhur Bhandarkar has given many female actors a different image in his films. Tabu [Chandni Bar], Raveena Tandon [Satta], Konkona Sen [Page 3], Bipasha Basu [Corporate] and Neetu Chandra [Traffic Signal] are living examples to prove that. Now he comes along with none other than Sonali Bendre whose last big screen foray was way back in 2003 when she did a mini appearance as a doctor in Kal Ho Na Ho.

However, it is not for a movie that the two are coming together. Instead, they would be seen in different roles - that of judges in a reality-TV show called 'Mr. and Miss Television', the show aspires for hunting the most talented and multi-faceted TV personality.

Though newcomer Shonali Nagrani would be hosting the show, Madhur Bhandarkar and Sonali Bendre would be judging these contestants. There would also be a celebrity guest every day on the show.

Says Madhur Bhandarkar, "I am already shooting for the show and it is good fun. It is different from what I did 2 years back in 'Zee Cinestars' where I was one of the judges along with Anupam Kher and Pooja Bhatt. Here, a participant not just goes through singing, acting and dancing routine. Instead, the show format also requires stages like stand-up acts which makes it different from other reality shows in the running."

While Kushal Punjabi, Sanjeet Bedi, Manoj Bora, Chetan Hansraj, Karan Vahi and Swapnil Joshi are the male participants, the female line-up consists of Shilpa Saklani, Aashka Goradia, Priyanka Bassi, Jasver Kaur, Purbi Joshi and Nausheen Ali Sardar. These actors will compete with each other for the title of Mr. and Miss Television.

When questioned about his co-judge Sonali Bendre, Madhur says, "Oh, she looks as pretty as she always has over the years. It is nice to have her back in showbiz."

"Mr. and Miss Television" will be starting from 24th March.

I'm testing myself on TV"
Sonali Bendre

Bollywood beauties, who had quit work to look after their tiny tots, are using television as a comeback tool. After Raveena Tandon, it's Sonali Bendre who returns to the fold as a judge on Sony's reality show Mr and Miss TV.

However, the gorgeous Sonali, whose last work of note was Amol Palekar's Marathi film Annahat, isn't considering Mr and Miss TV as a full time return to Tinsel town. She would do that once her kid grows a little older.

In this exclusive interview to Tellychakkar, the sizzling and ravishing Sonali talks about her brief stint on television. Excerpts:

Why make a comeback through television?
My child is just two years old and plus Goldie is away from home most of the time. Thus I decided to stay back and look after my child. It's important that at least one parent stays with the child. Goldie has just returned after shooting his film. This was an opportunity to go out and when Mr and Miss TV was offered to me, I grabbed it with both hands.

What made you opt for Mr and Miss TV?
There are two reasons for taking up this show. Firstly, it required only nine days. Secondly, the venue (Yash Raj studios) is very close to my house. I know this sounds very strange but if the shoot was in Film City, I wouldn't have gone.

What do you have to say about the concept of the show?
The concept of the show is definitely very interesting. I was very happy to know that it's not just dance or a singing show but it also showcases other talents of an individual. (I didn't know that Purbi Joshi was such a fabulous dancer. I love the way she mimic's and make people laugh.) Besides, they are not just anybody but well recognised actors.

What according to you is required to be called Mr and Miss TV?
Personally, I take into consideration all aspects. The person should have the ability to perform any given task. In other words he or she should be an all rounder.

Tell us something about your experience as a judge?
I was of the view that sitting in a judge's chair is an easy task but I'm left to eat my words now. The elimination part is the trickiest. I feel bad whenever I have to announce the elimination. Luckily, I have Madhur with me. He makes my task a little easier. Also, it's nice to have two Maharashtrians as judges.

Do you watch TV?
Yes, I do but mostly its National Geographic Channel or Discovery. I'm not the only one in the family to watch those fiction or reality stuff on television. Sometimes, I sit with my mother-in-law and she watches all these shows. Each and every room in my house has a television which plays different shows. There's a TV in my kitchen too which is on full time. So, I do catch a glimpse of these serials. If I happened to miss a few episodes, then my mother-in-law is always there to help me out.

Will you be taking more shows on television?
Currently, I'm testing myself on TV. If this (Mr and Miss TV) goes perfect then I'm open to taking up new ventures in future. Let's see what the future has in store for me.

cheers

Suroon Ki Jung

The singing episode of Ustaadon Ke Ustaad kickstarts with Toshi from Star Voice of India who sings Kailash Kher's famous song Preet ki lat mohe aisi lagi. Sajid Khan immediately quizzes him on controversial issues like "Aap pe kisne humla kiya tha?" For those who have come in late… post Voice of India, a couple of months ago Toshi was attacked by some unidentified people… and was admitted to the hospital… Next in line is the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant Mauli Dave, Bappida had rechristened her as the 'Indian Shakira'! Mauli sang the latest hit from Johnny Gaddaar, the song Move your body . Saroj Khan felt the fire was missing in her performance…while Javed Akhtar admitted that he had heard the song for the first time… he agreed she sang very well but was quick to point out that her Hindi diction was not as good as her English and she needed to work on it! Mauli snapped back saying that the major part of her growing years were spent in USA and she was not fluent in Hindi but was working at it! The high-point came with Sumitra Iyer from Star Voice of India who stole the show with Maiya Maiya. Indian Idol contestant, Amit Paul effortlessly rendered Doli mein sajaake… sitaaron mein bithake" from the film Saawariya. Amit had Sarojji whistling at his performance… The episode is to be aired on April 10 at 10 pm.

Saroj Khan is the only gutsy lady who does not mince her words. She also has the grace to admit her mistake and apologise. In a recent episode of Ustadon Ke Ustad, she apologised to choreographer Bindi for calling her a bad dancer in a previous episode. She added that she was very impressed with the choreographer's moves and therefore owed her an apology. The stunned look on Bindi's face, which soon turned to delight ensured that Saroj had won her over.
