Dilip Kumar: The actor, the institution.
Anyone who enjoys the nuances of fine acting and can discern good from bad, will agree that he was the finest we had. Though he had stopped acting way back in 1998, his body of work is impressive to say the least.
For me, personally, his best era was the late 40s through to the early 60s. I know he did a lot of character roles for which he is lauded (and perhaps the present generation identifies more with those), but for me, his lead roles were the ones that stood out.
I'm going to post my top 10 Dilip Kumar solo and duet songs in no particular order.
I'll start first with the solo numbers.
1. Ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal, Film: Aarzoo (1950), Music: Anil Biswas, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Singer: Talat Mahmood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7LtH-YJ8Os
This film is supposedly based on 'Wuthering Heights', a story DK was said to have been obsessed over, especially the character of Heathcliff that he portrayed again in 'Dil Diya Dard liya' over a decade later. This film stars Kamini Kaushal as his love interest, who he also fell in love with in real life -and both love stories were doomed, sadly.
Talat's voice and the lyrics convey the anguish of DK's character very well indeed. Beautiful song!
2. Shaam-e-gham ki Kasam, Film: Footpath (1953), Music: Khayyam, Lyrics: Ali Sardar Jafri, Singer: Talat Mahmood

Such a lovely song of waiting! Among Khayyam's early works. Simply sublime.
3. Tu kahe agar, Film: Andaaz (1949), Music: Naushad, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Singer: Mukesh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emuDkBWbibI
Andaaz is a veritable music fest. With songs like Jhoom jhoom ke nacho aaj, uthaye ja unke sitam, hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe, it's hard to pick one favorite. Tu kahe agar stands out for me simply because it depicts the level of obsession (bordering on insane devotion) that DK's character feels for Nargis' character. This song is one of several in the film that feature DK, piano and Cuckoo dancing. Extremely well sung by Mukesh, and of course, acted by DK. The movie itself has not aged well, and is now considered regressive and misogynistic, especially Raj Kapoor's character. Directed by Mehboob Khan who later directed Mother India, hailed by many as a testament to feminism.
Tagging everyone so they can post their favorite DK songs too.
