CHAPTER 6
Shaurya's eyes boiled with rage, his fists clutched with vexation.
He knew he couldn't single handedly knock a group of thugs down. Nor could Anokhi.
In a fraction of second, he went inside his gleaming four-wheeler and took his revolver out.
A sudden fire in the air startled the unarmed drunkards.
Shaurya directed the revolver towards them, pushing them to release Anokhi.
They plunged Anokhi out of their hold, and flew away.
Anokhi had become frail due the sudden hustle-bustle. She fell over Shaurya, who held her strongly, close to his chest.
He began rubbing her back, trying to tell her that she is secure now, as well as calming his own rage simultaneously.
"Anokhi, Anokhi are you alright?" He asked.
Only silence prevailed on the desolated road.
"Anokhi! Anokhi look at me!" His voice became louder.
No response.
He looked down at her level, to find her lying unconscious on his chest.
"Oh my god Anokhi. Anokhi can you hear me? Anokhi, speak something dammit."
Her silence silenced silences.
Shaurya panicked. He took her in his arms and laid her down on the conducter seat of the car.
He came back to his seat and tried to make her concious, but failed.
"Anokhi! Can't you hear me. Open you eyes!"
He kept talking to her at regular intervals, while hastily driving towards the hospital.
He reached the city hospital in no time.
Tears began forming in his eyes as he picked her from the seat and barged inside the hospital.
~
The doctor was examining Anokhi, while Shaurya sat outside. He sighed helplessly, recalling the last hour of his day.
It had been 4 years since their break-up.
Breakup?
F*ck that.
Even after 4 years of seperation, when he saw her in danger, his heart thudded crazily. When he saw her lying listlessly in his arms, he could feel the pinch in his chest.
He still didn't know what had happened to her. It was all so sudden. He didn't know when she would recover. He felt a void forming in the pit of his stomach at that thought.
In a perplexed state, he ran his hands through his hair, and scratched his head out of frustration.
Suddenly his phone rang.
"Shaurya, where are you?" Shaan asked him from the other side.
It was at that moment that Shaurya realised the time. It was half past 11 in the night. He generally reaches Sabherwal mansion by 7 in the evening.
He had not told Shaan about the then-and-there meeting with Mr. Malhotra, let alone taking about the incident that happened after that.
"Dad!" Shaurya sighed.
He explained everything to Shaan.
"Oh god Shaurya! Wait, I'm coming to the hospital right now." Shaan exclaimed.
"I don't think there's any need for now. You and mom can come tomorrow. And please let everyone know that I'll be late, so you guys can sleep." He concluded and hung up.
The doctor stepped and walked towards Shaurya, gaining his attention.
Shaurya almost immediately jumped from his seat and began throwing questions towards the doctor.
"How is she doctor? What happened to her? Is she concious now?" He interrogated in one go.
"There's nothing to worry much about, Mr. Sabherwal. She fainted as her blood pressure went low. Besides that, she has some bruises on her body. She'll gain conciousness by tomorrow morning. You can come to check her in the morning." The doctor explained to Shaurya.
As Shaurya stepped out of the hospital, his eyes brimmed yet again, as the anger and frustration he had been nudging till now reappeared.
He reached the Sabherwal house and went back to his room, and finally drifted into sleep, as exhaustion took over him.
~
Shaan woke up Shaurya in the morning.
"Freshen up Shaurya. We'll go and meet her." He instructed while combing his hair.
"You should leave. I'll come after some time and meet you guys." Shaurya spoke as he got up from the bed.
His head was buzzing.
He look at his reflection in the mirror.
"God Anokhi. What have you done." He thought, as he dressed himself up hastily.
~
Shaurya met Shaan at the hospital.
"How's she now?" He questioned.
"She has gained conciousness. Aastha is talking to her. You shall go after Aastha comes back." Shaan told him.
"Phew! Finally." Shaurya breathed out of relief.
"Sir, here is your wife's report." The nurse handed a file to Shaurya.
Shaan gazed at Shaurya with wide eyes.
"Shaurya....wife?" Shaan coughed.
"Actually... You know dad, the hospital formalities." Shaurya fumbled up with words. "They asked the patient's relation with me.... I didn't know what to come up with, till then...So, I just—"
"It's okay Shaurya." Shaan smiled slightly.
"Please dad! Don't smile!" Shaurya whined, making Shaan smile even more wider.
At that moment, Aastha came out of the room. Shaurya rushed inside without any second thought.
Anokhi was seated on the bed lopsidedly, with the bedrest supporting her back.
She was trying to reach out to the glass of water kept on the drawer by her side.
Shaurya rushed in and handed the glass of water to her. She became startled at his sudden reappearance, but then relaxed down.
She quenched her thirst while Shaurya made himself seated on a stool infront of her bed.
He looked sideways, trying to find out the ways to pick the conversation up.
"Gosh! What is with this awkwardness?!" They both thought.
He gave up at last.
"How are you now?" He asked, a voice more concerned that usual.
"Alright. The doctor said that I may get discharged tomorrow." She said quietly.
"Does it hurt?" He pointed towards the bruise on her upper arm.
"A little bit." She replied honestly.
"Why didn't I kill those guys on the spot?" He blurted out in frustration.
"Atleast you saved me. God knows what they were upto." She smiled slightly through her pain.
Shaurya buried his face in his palms, He had never felt so weak.
"Shaurya." She called him out. So gently, that it sounded like a music that had hit the right chord.
He lifted his face up.
"Hmm?" He looked at her.
"Thankyou. If you would not have showed up, —" She gulped, as she left her own statement incomplete. She was choking on her words.
Silent tears fell down from their eyes.
Because she wasn't fine.
Because he wasn't fine too.
"I guess I'll leave. Take rest" He said, as he stood up from his seat, and stepped out of the room.
The tears that had brimmed in her eyes betrayed her and fell down.
Her silent muffles soon turned into sobs and then transformed into whimpers, as she wiped her eyes off and laid down on the bed.
She didn't cry out of pain, but out of helplessness. What has fate written for them?
"She'll get the discharge tomorrow, I'll stay here in the night." Shaurya commanded, as he ran his fingers through Anokhi's reports.
Shaan and Aastha exchanged a look.
"Then we can stay here till the evening. You shall go to SIAC meanwhile." Aastha tried to convince Shaurya.
"Okay, I'll leave for SIAC. You guys take care." He sighed as he departed.
~
In the evening, Shaurya headed from SIAC to his house, to freshen himself up, as he had to spend the night in hospital.
"Shaurya!" Devi shouted while entering his room.
"Badi ma?"
"You didn't even bother to tell me that that girl has come back?!"
"That girl?"
"ANOKHI BHALLA"
"Oh Anokhi!, Yes, she was approached for a project. And she accepted it."
"Why do not you understand? That girl will again ruin you, Shaurya! Why have you stopped listening to me?"
"Enough Badi ma! Just please don't utter another word."
"Shau—"
"No. Don't compel me to disrespect you as I really don't want to do that. What do you think?
First you didn't leave any stone unturned to seperate us 4 years back, and still you have the guts to pretend that you wish the best for me.
You are only concerned about your ego Badi ma. And it is because of you that I am suffering till now. You know nothing about my pain.
It was because of Anokhi that I got Mom back in my life. But the irony is that my life became devoid of Anokhi.
I know how to handle things badi ma. I do not have milk teeth. Please leave me on my own. I'll do whatever I want, and please, please do not interfere.
And one last thing. She never ruined my life. She had made it worth living. But I know a few people who ruined it once and for all."
He folded his hands in front of her out of exasperation and left the premises, while an astonished Devi kept looking at his sight.
"We have lost him." Tej tapped on her shoulder, bringing her out of her reverie.
"We did. 4 years back." She responded.
"And it's our fault only. We have to bear with it, I guess." He said, accepting their defeat.
~
Aastha and Shaan were chit chatting on the hospital bench, when Shaurya met them.
"Everything okay?" He asked the causal question to both.
"Much better. Aastha had fed her some food, and we talked to her until she dozed off." Shaan told him.
"Alright. You guys should leave. I'll see you tomorrow." He told them.
"If you need anything, just call any one of us." Aastha said to Shaurya.
He smiled and nodded as they left the site.
Shaurya got seated outside Anokhi's room, and kept scrolling his phone before sleep took over him.
