Team Kyunki Saas …are fretting over the 20 year leap that is scheduled for February

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Is this what they will look like 20 years from now?
The generation leap formula might have worked well for Balaji in the past, but it did not go down well with their stars. While, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi prepares for another 20 year generation leap in February, it already has actors expressing their concern over the issue.

In the past, whether a Tulsi or Mihir, they all had to contend with grey streaks and glasses to justify their 50-plus screen age. Some actors even quit the show on grounds of the age factor; classic example being Amar Upadhyaya. Besides him, there were Shakti Anand, Hussain and some other characters who didn't want to get slotted playing a 50 plus character.

The situation is no different this time. Several actors have already expressed their hesitation about the way they will be expected to look and are having second thoughts about essaying roles much older than their chronological age. Like the last time, it has been alleged that the younger actors have expressed their reservations about continuing with the show if the leap takes place and have threatened to leave the show. Commenting on the situation, Nivedita Basu, Creative Head Balaji says, "From the day the leap was announced, the actors have been coming to meet us. They have their queries, which I think is fair." Basu assures that none of these actors have spoken about quitting the show due to the fear of getting typecast as yet. Further, creative head of the show Shivangi Chauhan adds, "I believe that the leap that is scheduled to take place in February 2006 has become the latest topic of discussion on the sets. No one has approached us with their so-called ultimatum."

But actor Sumeet Sachdev, who plays a pivotal part in the show, says that he hasn't really given playing an older Gautam Virani a thought as yet. "I don't know what to say. I'm damn confused. I won't deny that playing an older character will be 'boring'... Honestly I haven't even thought about it," says Sachdev. On the other end, Tasneem Sheikh is excited about this leap. "The character of Mohini was conceived by Ekta. I'm going to follow her instructions blindly. I'm sure it'll be fun. But I'm not going to have grey streaks in my hair. The look and other aspects will be discussed when I have a formal meeting with Ekta."

Interestingly, every actor is tackling the situation differently. Hiten Tejwani says: "As of now, I'm not even thinking about the leap and the changes that will come with it. Playing an old Karan will be an added responsibility. In terms of looks, I'll probably wear glasses but no grey for me; I'm very particular about that." Shilpa Saklani for her part is cool about portraying the role of an older Ganga. "I've already played a similar role in Kkusum. So for Kyunki... I'm going to take it when it comes to me. I've not met anyone from the creative team as yet, so I don't know the details. But I'm not going to have grey streaks in my hair. If Tulsi and Savita can play 45 and 65 year olds without looking old, then why shouldn't I?"

HIGH POINTS OF THE LEAP:
The leap will entail several changes; but certain things will remain unchanged. Like the ever-so-young Baa. "Earlier, we'd planned that the 20 years leap will happen after Baa's death," says Chauhan. But there was a change in plan when they realised how popular Baa's character was. Also with Apara Mehta's mercy killing track, it wasn't possible to show two deaths in a family. "We've now decided that Baa will continue to be with the show post the leap. She'll be alive and rocking," adds Chauhan. "
