Proxy:
Whoosh. A swirl of wind came in through the front door, signaling the entrance of someone and the sweet scent that preceded their arrival had Shiva reaching for the plate of vegetables. As soon as she was in his line of fire, he began pelting her with vegetables. He made sure to not actually hit her delicate frame but threw the juicy weapons around her sides, outlining her whole body to scare her out of her wits.
āAe Mami Ki Behen Ki Beti. Nikaal mere ghar se. Bachpan se dimaag kharab karke rakha hai.ā Dev tried to stop him from throwing the vegetables which only intensified the anger he was feeling at the moment. āShivaaa,ā she screeched while hiding behind the pillars. His name, though she had shrieked it, sounded like music to his ears and for once he had broken her Dev jhaap. Taking advantage of the situation, he began to throw even more vegetables with an even faster pace while keeping his eyes trained on her body. Even in his rage, his movements were calculated and precise, shielding her from any actual harm. She kept yelling āShivaā and each time his heart fluttered. Shiva responded by tossing another vegetable towards her. He had blocked out all sounds except for hers, and solely focused on the chipkali in front of him.
He only stopped when Dev positioned himself in between them, effectively blocking his view from his chipkali. Saala bhai nahi hota toh yahi iska bharta bana deta. Hamesha mere aur chipkali ke beech mein ajata hai. Shiva was agitated by the interruption and annoyed that Dev had once again stepped into his personal matters with Raavi. Moreover, she had stopped calling out Shivaās name and was now busy with hiding behind Devās back while stealing glances at him. He saw the dazed look on her face and the subtle blush creeping up her neck and before she could begin her inevitable Dev jhaap, he slammed the plate on the ground and grabbed her by the elbow. He had been having fun with his chipkali and now it had been completely ruined by the third wheel of a buffoon he called brother.
He dragged out of the door and flung her across the street, and she landed straight in his Bhabhiās arms. Ab toh tu gaya Shiva. Raavi began to sob in his Bhabhiās arms, and he rolled his eyes at her dramatics. Not a single vegetable had touched her, yet she was acting as if he had beaten her black and blue. āDhara Di dekho na, isne saare ghar ki sabjia uthake aise whoosh whoosh karke missile ke tara mere upar fekh di. Kitni galat baath hai, jiss ladki ki shaadi iss ghar main hone wali hai uske saath aisa dhoom dhadaka koi kartha hai kya?ā She flung her arms around to mimic the bhootnathās motions, overexaggerating the āhorrific traumaā she had just gone through.
āAe Mami Ki Behen Ki Beti, ek baar mein samaj nahi aata tujhe. Main teri aur Dev ki shaadi kabhi nahi hone dunga.ā He huffed in irritation at her one-track mind. How did every single conversation with her end up on the topic of her and Devās wedding?
āDekha Dhara Di. Ye mere pyaar mein itna paagal hogaya hai ki kisi aur se meri shaadi nahi hone dega. Main toh keh rahi hoon ka aap isko kisi ache doctor ko dikhwalo. Pata chala ye itna obsessed hogaya ke Darr ka Shah Rukh Khan banjaye.ā Raavi inched away from him in mock fear, and he raised his hand in front of her face to curse her out.
āPyaar aur voh bhi tujh jaisi chipkali se. Isse acha toh mein khud apne aap ko sabjiyo ki tara khaat daloon.ā He took one step backwards as well, creating much-needed distance between him and the chipkali.
āRehne de Shiva. Tujh jaisa chipkala kissi ko hazam nahi hoga.ā She leaped into Dharaās arms, fully aware that the more she insulted him, the greater the chances of his retaliation.
āChipkala nahi, junglee bhalu hoon main. Zyada bolegi na, noch dunga.ā He curled his fingers to mimic a bearās paw and scratched the air to warn her. She was about to retort back, and he waited for her response eagerly, but her gaze had shifted from him to something behind. He turned around to find Dev exiting the front door as well and noticed how the chipkali had straightened her posture and fixed her hair. The scowl on her face had been replaced with a sweet smile. Shuru iski nautanki.
āChal koi nahi. Itās okay Shiva. Kehthe hai ke family main toh aise ladai jagde hote rehte hai. Ja tujhe maaf kiya.ā Though she had been talking to Shiva, her eyes were completely trained on Dev. He had lost her attention yet again and barreled back into the house without replying.
āKya Shiva tu kyu itna usko sitha tha hai. Voh toh tere baare mein bol bol ke thaak thi nahi. Pata hai aaj usne kya kaha?ā Krish said while shaking his head at his brotherās antics. Shivaās interest was piqued, he had only ever heard Dev and his praises come out of her mouth.
āKya bola uss gadhedi ne?ā He tried to act indifferent but, on the inside, he was jumping with excitement.
āUsne bola ke voh teri proxy hai. Aur tum dono ko dekh ke toh uski baate sach hi lag rahi hai,ā Krish replied and walked away, not really interested in the ugly reaction he was sure Shiva was going to have. On the other hand, Shiva was at a loss of words and ran his fingers through his hair, feeling a bit awkward yet a tinge of happiness as well. Meri proxy? Dhara Di ki nahi. Dev ki nahi. Par meri proxy bola usne? For the first time she had attached her name to his instead of Devās and his heart leapt in joy, a small smile was plastered on his face for the rest of the day.
The next time she had come back to Pandya Niwas, he had waited beside a pillar for her attention to focus on him. She smiled at him sweetly and pulled out her phone, positioning the both of them in the frame of the camera. āSelfie lena mera saath,ā she said and though he didnāt mind the attention, he scoffed.
āKis khushi mein?ā he asked whole folding his arms across his chest, looking away from her vibrant smile.
āAre aaj kitna bada din hai. Commando ke haath mein na aloo hai na pyaaz. Aaj kis cheez se hamla karega?ā He smiled at her teasing, baffled by how she could be so annoying yet cute at the same time. She turned back to look into the camera and her eyes widened in horror, as he held up three knives. āAaj ye hai.ā
She gulped in fear and put the phone down, watching his movements very carefully. He took a step towards her, and she took one back. āIski dhaar check kare?ā
Raavi forced out a chuckle and replied, āDekh Shiva, ek second ke liye mujhe dekh. Itni cute ladki itni kaam umaar mein marjayegi toh mera kuch nahi jayega. Lekin duniya ka nuksaan hojayega na.ā She took one more step backwards as he had taken one more towards her. She watched as he flicked the knife back and forth.
āTu duniya ki chinta maath kar. Tu toh meri proxy hai na. Jab original piece yaha khada hai toh proxy ki kya zaroorat?ā He saw the tint of red forming on her cheeks and was satisfied with her reaction.
āDekh Shiva main galat thi, main maan thi hoon. Aaj ke baad kabhi nahi bolungi ke main teri proxy hoon. Hatta isko please,ā she stuttered out, cursing whoever had told Shiva about her earlier comment. Shiva glared at her for retracting her statement, this was not the response he had been hoping for.
He brought the knife closer to her face and said, āTujhe kisine bola ye proxy wala natak band karne ke liye. Zyada dimaag math laga apna, samjhi tu?ā He wanted her to repeat that she was his proxy for the rest of their lives and couldnāt bear the thought of her never saying it again. Raavi was too focused on the sharp edges of the knives to fully register what he had said.
āDekh Shiva ye bacho ka khilona nahi hai.ā Shiva looked her up and down. Bachi toh nahi hai.
āEk dum correct bole che, na tu bachi na main bacha. Toh bekar mein nah panga maath liya kar, samjhiā He flicked the knife to one side of her head and then to the other, before raising her chin slightly with the blunt edge.
āSamjhi ki nahi?ā He asked again after receiving no response from her. She nodded her head in fear and he finally put the knives down. He turned to walk away but not before raising the knives once again to scare her. She flinched backwards and he smirked while walking away.
āTu kuch bhi bol le Shiva, teri proxy toh main hamesha rahongi aur tu kuch nahi karpayega,ā she yelled while running past him, not slowing down to see his reaction. Shiva stopped in his tracks and smiled at her running figure. Toh maine kab bola ke tu nahi hai.
Meri proxy.
