I think his tragedy was an excuse to his psychopathic behaviour. He had no compassion or love on him. What he does was selfish and kills due to his obsession. If he really cared about his mother he wouldn’t have caused her pain. He was just obsessed with the idea of revenge.
He could have used other methods to get revenge, nothing excuses taking life of innocents.
As it’s said.. there’s a difference between getting justice and revenge.
I think the original story (based on a novel) - A Kiss Before Dying works better because there is no attempt to make him sympathetic. There's no revenge with attendant weak excuses for murder. He's just a greedy sociopath trying to murder and marry into a fortune.
