"Main Sai se shaadi karne ke liye tayyar hoon." he barely recognized the sound of his own voice when he uttered these words.

He could see the relief wash over the faces of the villagers as he spoke. Despite the dreadful situation they were in, Usha Maushi even managed to look happy. How, he didn't understand. She had just lost the man she considered her brother for years, and right now, it seemed like the only thing that mattered to her was that Sai was getting married... to him.

He couldn't believe that he had actually agreed to the marriage, as absurd as the idea sounded. The minute he had given his consent, the villagers started making the arrangements, in case he changed his mind.

"Pakhi... main tumse vaada karta hoon, ki main na hi apni dil mein aur na hi apni zindagi mein kisi aur ko jagah doonga."

He remembered the promise that he made to Pakhi on the night of her Sangeeth. And this marriage meant that... he was breaking his promise? No. He wasn't. He promised her that he wouldn't allow anyone else in his life or in his heart. And no, he wasn't giving Sai a place in his heart, or in his life. She was free to leave the minute she became a doctor and could stand on her own feet. He was only taking up Sai's responsibility. He didn't love her... and he would never fall in love with her.

How could he even fall in love with someone like Sai? She was arrogant, headstrong, rude, mannerless, implusive... she was everything that Pakhi was not. But she was also brave... very brave, honest and selfless. She was a true fighter. He still remembered the way she hardly bothered about the fact that she was kidnapped and almost forcefully married to Jagtap, probably abused in his house even. Her only concern was her Aaba's deteriorating health. She did not even break down, once. She always fought for what she thought was right. And for that, he had grown to admire Sai.

But, there was only one time he saw her break... and she was broken in worst way possible. Right after her Aaba's death. Though he did want to go back to Nagpur, back to his best friend, he dreaded leaving Sai behind in that vulnerable state, especially when he knew that her Aaba was all that she had. And his worst fears had come true when he got a call from Usha Maushi two days ago, who fearfully told him that Sai had attempted suicide.

He remembered that cold feeling in his heart with every passing moment as he rushed back to Gadchiroli. And seeing Sai on the floor of her house, bleeding and lifeless, it felt like someone had taken his heart right out of his chest. Seeing the once - optimistic and full-of-life Sai in such a lifeless state killed him from the inside. He had promised his Guru that he would take care of her, and he just left her to her fate, and he could never forgive himself for that.

Now that he was given a second chance, now that Sai had escaped death, he wanted to put things right. He wanted to stand by his word, his promise to his guru. Maybe Sai didn't want this marriage, just like him. But he couldn't leave her alone again, not with the dangers lurking around her. And despite his own heartbreak, he was glad that Sai was safe, and would continue to be safe with him.

The next day dawned, bright and clear. It seemed as if even the trees and birds were livelier that day, as if celebrating. He stared out of the window, the promise made to Pakhi and his guru weighing him down. Was he doing the right thing? Was he doing right by Pakhi? It wasn't too late to call off the wedding. But the sight of Sai's bleeding wrist flashed before him, her face still and lifeless. That when he decided that it was Sai who mattered more now. He wanted her to live, to become a successful doctor, just like had always dreamt. He couldn't leave her alone now.

"Saab. Ab aapko tayyar hona hai." Inspector Pawar walked into his quarters and placed a pair of dhoti-kurta on his table. Virat felt a strange sense of discomfort as he slipped into the wedding attire. This was definitely not how he envisioned his wedding to happened, as aftermath of a tragedy. He dreaded the reaction of his family members, and even Pakhi, who would be coming here any moment with Sunny.

After he was done getting dressed, he stepped out of his quarters, not even bothering to look at his reflection in the mirror. He reached the venue, where the villagers had crowded to witness his sacred union with Sai. Usha Maushi came forward to feed him sweets, as this auspicious event had to be started with something sweet. He walked to the altar, his eyes automatically looking out for Sai. And that was when he saw her.

She was clad in a Pink and Green Paithani saree, her hair done up in a tight bun that was adorned by Gajra. She donned the traditional gold jewellery that sparkled in the sun as she walked up the altar, her eyes refusing to meet his. She looked... beautiful. He had never given any thought to how she looked before. But now, standing in front of him, he couldn't deny that there was something about her that made you want to look at her again. He could see the lone tear that escaped her eye as she looked at her feet. As if by instinct, his hand wanted to reach out to her wipe her tears away, but he stood rooted to his spot. No one deserved to go through what Sai was going through now.

"Ab Vadhu, Var ko mala pehnayegi." his trance was broken by the pandit's voice.

Sai hesitantly stepped forward with the garland in her hand, her eyes still not meeting his. He lowered his head, signalling her to put the garland around his neck, and she did.

"Ab Var, Vadhu ko mala pehnayega." said the pandit, as Virat picked up the garland next to him and placed it on Sai's neck. That was when she looked him square in the eye, her eyes holding a million questions, and the most prominent one being, Why are you doing this?

He did not have an answer to that question. He didn't know why he was doing this. He didn't know why he agreed to the marriage, despite his own heartbreak, but it felt like the right thing to do. Though his heart was breaking into a million pieces thinking about Pakhi, it still felt right when he put the garland around Sai's neck. What kind of a twisted feeling was that?

Once the Jaimala ceremony was done, they were seated on the altar, while Milind Kaka did Sai's Kanyadhaan. He sat there, vaguely aware that Pakhi and Sunny had reached the venue and were looking at him, shocked to the core, as he went on with the wedding rituals. He could feel Pakhi's accusing stare burning through him.

"Ab Var, Vadhu ke gale mein mangalsutra pehnayega." said the pandit, as Usha Maushi handed over the sacred jewel to him. His automatically met Sai's as he took the Mangalsutra in hands, ready to place it around her neck.

"Yeh sabse mahatvapoor rasm hai. Mangalsutra ka arth hai shubh bandhan. Ek aisa pavitra bandhan, jismein pati-patni janmon janm tak atoot bandhan mein band jaate hai." said the pandit, as he signalled Virat to go ahead with the rasm. Virat's eyes never left Sai's as he hesitantly took the mangalsutra towards her, gently placing it around her neck. Sai simply bowed her head, allowing him to put the mangalsutra around her with ease. She looked like she had lost all the fight in her and succumbed to her fate.

"Ab Var, Vadhu ke maang mein Sindhoor bharega." the pandit handed over a box of vermillion to him. Virat took a pinch of Sindhoor between his fingers and looked at Sai. She simply moved her maangthika aside to give him access to her hair parting. Ever so gently, as if he were handling something made of glass, he filled her maang with sindhoor, treating her as if she might break at the slightest pressure.

It was then time for the pheras, where the bride and groom promise each other togetherness, love and understanding, through sickness and health, through ups and downs. At this time, he had only one thing in mind as he held Sai's hand and walked around the sacred fire. I've been made to protect you, Sai. And I will always protect you. Only in death will this promise be broken.

"Ab vivaah sampan hui." the villagers showered the bride and groom with flowers and rice as they touched the feet of the elders. He knew that Pakhi was waiting below the altar with a broken heart, expecting answers. But that could wait. He turned to look at Sai again as she prayed to Lord Shiva, her eyes closed with such devotion that he had to smile. His eyes traveled to her hair parting, which was now filled with Sindhoor, down to her neck, where the mangalsutra rested. Those are the strings that bind us. he thought. He didn't know if they had a forever to look forward to. But for now, they were bound together, and for now, Sai was with him, safe and secure, where no harm could befall her. I'll do right by you Sai. he silently promised her as he escorted her from the altar towards their uncertain future.
