I wanted to avoid talking about this, but here is my take on this.
Even today a lot of people, families in India do think that “spare the rod, spoil the child”. This is completely NOT justified, it is NOT correct, but it is there, nonetheless.
I have a feeling that a lot of the people on the forum are from more urban, progressive setups. But in small towns, hitting as a form of discipline is normalized. You may not have seen it in your vicinity, but it is very much prevalent in certain strata of society in India( I grew up in such a household. My family members still stand by it 🤷♀️)
I strongly suspect a large portion of the TRP audience are tied to such households. If you have followed ITV for last 2-3 decades, they have pulled worse crap than this.
When I see ITV shows, I generally tend to disengage the part of me that looks for sensitive protrayals and sensible family meme era. There have been a lot of discussions on the effects of TRPs on shows. Let’s not go down that rabbit hole.
I look at this way. You are taking an outsiders look at a family. The members are always a mix(as in real life) where you love some, you hate some. Family members sometime do heinous things- humans sometimes do heinous things. Not everyone repents, not especially the way you want to. And you can’t do anything about it.
Case in point-Maami. She was truly cruel before the leap. What she did was truly heartbreaking for the family- PS family have struggled so much for her insensitivity and cunningness. But today we look forward to her scenes as comic relief and complain about what the poor thing is going through by Suman.
Detachment is the name of the game. Look out for what you like. Ignore the crap. Hope for better outcomes. It’s a show at the end of the day. No point getting your BP up for it.
That said, I am not condoning beatings. It is bad, it should not happen, and it is a good sign that so many people are speaking up. Hopefully the next generation of people watching ITV shows don’t get to see such scenes( I know for the longest time ITV used to normalize marital rape, especially Ekta serials. But now it is looked down upon. I hope)
Sorry for the long rant, but it’s heartbreaking to see everyone so down on the forum. Hoping for better days ahead!
