I think he was also teasing her to make her feel better because she's been unwell. Once upon a time he would have said he had plenty of things to do rather than waste time on her, now he said he's the only one who's free to help her. What a change. I do think a lot of it was genuinely to please his mother. He's going to be one of those guys that knows how to maintain a perfect balance between mother and wife. Not that it'll be hard. So far we've seen Amma and Pallavi get along just fine and just like he treats Amma like an empress, he will treat Pallavi like a queen.
