‘Gauri?’ I heard Bucky’s shaky voice in my headset. Oh yes, you should fear me.
‘Yes,’ I quipped.
‘Hey don’t be like that, please,’ he sighed. ‘It was really not what it looked like. We are on a mission.’
‘Ok, Barnes, number 1: I don’t give a flying f**k of what you are doing with the opposite sex and number 2: we are in the middle of a mission. I have finally found a lead and intend to stick to it.’
‘But Ga-’
‘Just…no. Okay? You can do whatever the hell you want,’ I had spotted Rojas’ intern, who should be having the file she was talking about earlier today. ‘I am disconnecting now.’
‘No you know what. Stop.’ The dominance in his voice nearly froze me on spot. Trying to remaining as normal as possible, I kept an eye on said intern while Bucky continued speaking. ‘So number 1: when someone is so specific as you have just been, it shows you give more than a f**k. And number 2: stop using your work to distract you.’
‘Hey!’ I called out to the intern. ‘I am Gauri.’ I said coyly when he came to me. Plus Bucky could hear me right now…so it was two birds with one stone.
‘I am Noah,’ he smirked at me. Bucky’s smirk made me weak in the knees.
‘So Noah, what you got there?’ I ran my fingers on the file he was holding, letting my fingers deliberately touch his arm. Bucky’s arms have always held me so close, as if protecting me.
‘Some file Rojas wants,’ he was trying to keep it casual and cool, running his tongue on his lower lip. When Bucky does that…
‘You know what, she had asked me to bring it to her. So why don’t I take this from you?’
‘That’s weird. She asked me to—’
‘Oh Noah,’ I let his name stay on my tongue for a tad bit longer. ‘You know how Attendings can be.’
While he was thinking what to say for a minute, I could feel Bucky breathing into the headset.
‘Ok so here’s the deal,’ Noah said. ‘I give you the file and you have a drink with me. At Ander’s.’
‘Gauri…don’t you dare…’ Bucky growled. My knees nearly buckled at the mere texture of his voice. The sheer power of this man.
Biting back a groan, I said, ‘Okay Noah, one drink. I get off at 8 pm. But…don’t tell Rojas I helped you. She wouldn’t like us interns having caught her drift, if you know what I mean.’
‘Its a date then,’ he clicked his tongue at me, giving me the file. ‘Don’t worry Gauri. We all gotta stick together.’ Hopefully not.
Swallowing back the bile that had risen at the back of my throat, I started walking towards Nagel’s office. The Super Soldier Serum was being misused and the key had to be in this hospital. There were way too many ex-HYDRA operatives working here, it could not be a coincidence.

Stepping into Nagel’s office, I looked around cautiously. When I was sure there was no one, I started to look into the file first. Going through the pages multiple times, I suddenly spotted a discrepancy. It was so discrete that anyone could have missed it. Grinning to myself, I got out my phone and took a picture of the information. Just when I was going to log onto Nagel’s computer, a presence behind me startled me.
‘Keeping yourself busy I see,’ It was Bucky. Cautiously I turned to look at him, only to regret it. His eyes were filled with fury, nostrils flared and I was worried he would don his older persona just for a shorter period of time.
‘Yes. I found a lead,’ I passed him the file.
‘Thats not what I meant,’ he said, his blue eyes were piercing into mine. He knew exactly what he was doing, as much as I hated to admit it, he was somewhere aware of the influence he had on me.
‘Then what?’ I looked away from his face, reliving the lunch memory.
The fingers of his right hand grazed against my cheek, making me nearly lean into his touch. ‘Gauri,’ he whispered. ‘Talk to me.’
I cleared my throat, ‘Nothing Bucky. I…I got the file and found some information. Just need to go through his computer now.’
‘That’s not what I mean, doll,’ Bucky said gently, using that term of endearment. ‘How am I to know whats going on in that pretty little brain of yours.’
‘By doll, don’t you mean Dr. Rojas.’ The little frown on his face was laughable.
‘I am telling you, its nothing like that,’ Bucky coaxed me into believing him. ‘Gauri, I need to know everything right now.’
I sighed, ‘Its nothing you have to worry about okay? I don’t want you to work yourself up over something this stupid.’
Bucky pulled me closer into a hug, tucking my head under his chin, ‘Its never stupid when its about you, doll. You know that.’ For a minute I actually caved, letting him hold me. The comfort I had always felt in his arms was undeniable. And this is exactly how we had been for a year now, holding each other through the trauma but enjoying every happy moment together. Unknowingly over time we had become each others’ rock…and I had developed a crush on him which he seemed to be reciprocating. Alas, it was all so confusing, given his entire situation that I never forced him into anything, remaining content in what we had.
‘Bucky…’
‘Yes doll?’
Just before I could come clean I felt his phone buzzing. He sighed and pulled it out. I saw the message that had popped on his screen.

I did not need to find out who that was from, I already knew. Collecting all my emotions, building my walls around me, I got out of his embrace, ‘Well, this was nice, thank you.’ The pained look on his face nearly broke me but I continued, ‘I saw what was going on there, Bucky. You’re both interested in each other. And why wouldn’t you be, you are finally getting your life on track and deserve this happiness.’
He was silent as I passed him a pen drive. ‘Do me a favour,’ my voice cracked slightly. ‘This has the hacking software. Use it on Nagel’s computer and find out anything you can. I’ll keep him distracted.’
Sniffling back my tears, I started to walk towards the room when Bucky grabbed my arm with his metal arm, ‘Gauri, we are on a mission.’
I grinned at him, ‘Sure we are. But you deserve happiness, there’s no need to worry so much about your friend. Chill out.’
‘Gauri,’ his voice turned stern. ‘I never lose patience but this is infuriating me now. I was hanging out with Rojas because its helping me get information.’
‘Oh please,’ I snapped. ‘Even if it started off like that I saw the way you’ll looked at each other. If I hadn’t made it to your office she would’ve pounce on your bones.’
Bucky demeanor changed and his eyes grew darker. I had hit a nerve. ‘If thats what I wanted Gauri then I would’ve done it right after I came back. And besides, since when are you so concerned about my love life. After all, you’re a friend.’ The last word came out as more like an insult. ‘Like you said, you don’t care what I do with the opposite sex now, do you?’
‘Yeah I don’t!’
‘Fine!’
‘Fine!’
‘Enjoy your date!’
‘You too!’
‘Futu-i! Nu mai înșuruba cu capul meu!’ he half-shouted.
‘Chup kar! Chullu bhar paani mein dhoop marr!’ I quipped back, almost slamming the door behind me. The minute I was out of the room I half-ran towards the ER where I knew Nagel was. But this time, I had a stronger resolute: if Bucky can do it, I can do it. Even if its out of spite.
