It's very clear. Most of the opinions of people here points it out to one direction only - the marriage of Ani and Bon. The marriage, or I should say the tag of the marriage was and is still required for Bon to sustain and become a barrister. Back in 1920s, it was not easy to take responsibility without a tag like it is today. Had it been, why would we and even you watched the show? The marriage has a reason and for that reason, as you pointed out, Anirudh was in dilemma.

If there is any other way of Bon sustaining without having to face troubles from society, getting educated without the marriage, no one is going to have a problem. But IF there is a way.
