Nora,

I think whoever said didn have the literal meaning of A law against Child marriage made life harder for women? .How it reached me was in the way, any new law imposed or whatever a step in the direction of reform, would have more an impact on women in a society with patriarchial outlook.Evenif the intend was on the welfare of women, somehow it will be hidden with that dagger to harm women in a different way.

Now if you ask me, does that mean, one should we not take a step in the direction of change, or let it stay the same forever.I would say no, the change is inevitable. It must and It has to start from one

Somewhere earlier in other thread also I mentioned, law must be welcomed simultaneously with the rules to protect the victim. The reformers or the law should enforce rehabilitation of those child brides as well.

@bold

The issue here is the same regressive society only, Nora

How will they now treat those girls who were send out , with or without their consent .Who will own them? If their parents would have in all the cases, then why the child marriage ever happened. Considering the wickedness in society , people like mama mami, widowed mothers, Chodi hu aurats and HM, this enforcement of law is never an easy walk on roses for girls, it has thorns too..

There are two sides to this coin,

If Bon or any girl was actually married to the old man, was in distress with all the hardships of child marriage, will the law give girl the authority to call it off, irrespective of the man having advantage. If so how law protects her.

or

If the girl is more protective in the marriage like in Ani-Bon case, where if she is left out, there will be more chances of society and ever her own family harming her. Can she stay back. How will her rights be ensured then.?

There are many such contradicting cases, I am not quoting all

Now, coming to Ani or Bon to remain togethe

The same society poses the threat to them.Thinks of the names Bon will be called upon, if Ani exercise same right on her to make her reach her goal. A society where legal adoption, or mentor ship was just an alien concept. We sometimes mix our ideologies with the era. That era was much more dark for women. Howmuch ever we deny , girl needed a male support.

Now if that mean they have to forceful stay in the marital bond?I would say anything about marriage is mutual. If Ani could find another way to support her and be her shade and convince her about mentorship and security and they are both contented. This is the way. Else , considering all the truths of how an evil practice a child marriage, they has to be in complaisance with their marriage, atleast until the day Bon became independent and be on her own, unaffected by the society

The show is about reforms, Society was going to burn her alive, "Sati Pratha", with her husband, Child Marriage, the show is not about using name of society to promote Child Marriage

Any law which ends these cruel practices should be supported, There are millions of young girls who die every year, the effects of facing this in young age lead to anxiety and depression, where none understands them because people think about society and hope that they remain with their husband

Child marriage is not a good thing for a Child, Anyone in his or her right mind wouldn't want a Child to remain married to her husband

Reforms are not a one day thing, here you say one Child marriage couple should stay together because society will call them names, do you know this reason is real nightmare of young girls today?

Reforms is an every day process, we are still not free from this evil practice, the last thing we need is people supporting it

You are saying Bondita should be given a chance to decide but Bondita is a 12 years old, we had to ban Child marriage because a child of age 12 cant consent to anything, how can she decide?

When she grows up then she can decide, they give her big dialogues and there's no representation of the innocent Child in her but other 12 years old are not even considered old enough to own a Sim card in their name

If I am not wrong, there were adoption laws back then moreover Bondita's mother can live with RCs, she is her mother and legal guardian so Bondita can live wherever her mother lives

Was society happy with Bondita going to school? I don't recall anyone saying she shouldn't go to school because society will call her names, why all these excuses when it is about ending Child Marriage?

Well Nora no one here supports child marriage. I think you are not getting the context. The bitter truth of those dark times and still prevalent today is that female children are not always welcomed by their families more so in rural areas. So the next best thing that most parents liked to do with their little girls is marry them off. Now I am not saying that this is a great idea but in some of these cases it actually turns out to be better than being sold off, led into sex working, working as slaves or child labour, begging etc etc. Not everyone wants to adopt a child from a village. No one here is for child marriage all we are saying is that in Bondita’s case there was no other option if at all there was another way to save her am sure Anirudh would have done that.

We might be selective here by saying allow Bondita to decide for herself that is solely because the kid has got a family she is attached too. She too is terribly scared of leaving them and it’s right in quite a few ways. You snatch her away from Anirudh take her and hand her over to Sumati villagers come tie her and throw crowding on her just because now her husband has left her for her own good? Banning of child marriage is definitely a boon but what do you do about the mentality of the then society? Do they accept it and start sending their girl children to school? Let’s not forget the dark society that we once lived in where Sumati for being a widow was ostracised and thought of as a bad omen.

When you say why Sumati can’t live with Bondita the answer is simple it is because of the same society. If Bondita came from a influential background I don’t think any of this would have ever happened.
