Actually there is something called as echolocation.

The blind do this by making some noise, snapping fingers, tapping their cane etc, the sound waves hit nearby objects and they concentrate on the echo to know how far the objects are.. I don't know if that's exactly that the show is doing but if they are.. it's nicely done.

I had actually first seen this is in a Tamil movie.. the actor is similarly blind and he makes noise to find the distance between things..
