I think it was more realistic. Going for that french guy or divorcing would have been very OTT and unreal for an Indian woman irl

-- Did you guys find the ending predictable?

-- Did you feel that Shashi should have taken control of her life and taken the metaphor of learning English a step further and transformed her existence?

-- Her returning to her mundane life was problematic?

These points make me wonder whether the ending reinforced stereotypes and didn't give the chance for the character to breathe life into her surroundings.

Thoughts??

That is ur assumption....in a real life situation...maybe a woman after gaining confidence might have done something else with her life...like studying further...choosing a different career...something...they showed that her family's way of treating her had changed....and if people think that a woman would leave her family and kids...not happening....no one leaves their family just because they changed a little...change should be for better not for worse...like leaving family and her roots. The ending was just perfect,

So its better to live in a toxic family who doesn't respect you than to leave it?

A family oriented woman is better than a divorced woman?

Good to know!!!

The ending is predictable and quite vanilla. However, it is quite realistic and grounded. The simplicity is why the movie works and is so popular.

Shashi was an ordinary housewife. She was used to being taken for granted by her husband and daughter. She loved her family and all she wanted was a bit more respect and consideration. Her journey is completely in line with her character. She makes small but powerful steps to find people who appreciate her, gain confidence, and finally get the respect she craves from family. What worked is that her journey was relatable and acceptable to any Indian woman who feels stuck in a rut.

Anything more would not only have been uncharacteristic of Shashi, but it would also have made her character overwhelming and unrelatable for many Indian women. Shashi deserved a relationship with someone like Laurent and it would have been awesome to see her stand up for herself in the end. While a decent chunk of the audience would have applauded the radical growth, an equally large chunk would have felt alienated and seen her growth as a step too far for the Indian wife.

LMAO..it wasn't a toxic family.....the kids especially the girl was a stupid teenager and she realized her mistake later. The husband was actually nice....the problem was that none of them took out time to understand what Sri wanted....they all learned a lesson at the wedding of what Sri was capable of and English is just another language......you haven't seen toxic families.....her husband didn't come home drunk and beat her...or abuse her.......you must be kidding me to have her divorce him.....marriages shouldn't break so easily..it didn't look like the husband was an asshole....he looked like the kind who would support his wife ...had he known......it was Sri's mistake also to not emphasize enough what she wanted.....its easy to say ...divorce le lo....marriages sometimes need work....and divorce should be the last option especially when you have young kids..

That’s exactly what she says in the end, doesn’t she? In a marriage sometimes one person will need to hold the fort for both the partners or something in those lines, don’t remember exactly.

yup something on those lines in that speech she gave for the newly weds.

also I forgot to mention that how sweet was the Mother-in-law.😆

and frankly speaking , I found that French guy a little bit creepy.

The husband wasn't nice. Worse than the patronizing and degrading insults about her English, her job or anything she said were their bed scenes which made my skin crawl. Nothing in any of his actions made it looked recent. As said his mother was great so it wasn't even how he was brought up.

Her daughter was a horrible teenager but then that happens around that age. So she could be reasonably shamed and salvageable. He was a middle aged man. He wasn't going through a phase. I didn't buy for a second that the speech at the wedding or his jealousy of another man was going to make him appreciate and treat his wife with respect from then on.

I didn't expect her to leave him for another man since it would have been out of character but I needed far more from the husband to swallow that ending as a happy one.

@bold, Nice of you to assume things about my personal life without knowing shit about me.

I wasn't specifically talking about the movie when I asked you that question. Your statement implied that you're saying it's always better to not leave your family than to leave it.

I reminded you about the toxic families, to ask you whether it's better or worse to take divorce when the spouse is toxic....and you conveniently backtracked from your statements.

For your information, domestic violence ain't necessary in a family to be called toxic....and neither does your spouse has to be a complete asshole for you to leave the marriage.

This is an old age regressive mentality. Some people just want different things in life and that's why they get separated....and that's any day better than making compromises in your life for the spouse, because only one gender is expected to make compromises and sacrifices in a marriage.

It's actually EASY to NOT walk out of marriage than to walk out, because that's what society expects from you.
