I had missed the discussion on why Adi never got his marriage with Imlie annulled before marrying Malini in the last thread. So, I will post my 2 cents here.
More than this I have wondered why he hid his forced marriage in the first place. Ok, he could not tell Malini because it would have broken her heart. But why did he hide it from his family? He was forced to get married to Imlie at gunpoint. This was not a small incident.
I believe his family would have given him the support that he would have required to extract himself out of this forced marriage. It was not as if usne Imlie se bhaag ke shaadi ki thi. They would have guided him on the actions that he could have taken & convinced Malini & her family as well to delay the marriage plans.
I know he was emotionally traumatised & hence hesitating in accepting the truth of the marriage. But I also believe that there was an element of subconscious protectiveness for Imlie. He believed her to be his responsibility even back then when he was angry at her & destiny. He felt that she would be safe only with him.
We also need to think would he have reacted the same way if it was someone else in place of Imlie. I bet you then he would have done what was required to get legally free from the forced marriage in a practical way. But because it was Imlie, all his reactions were emotional rather than practical.
The time he spent with Imlie before the forced marriage needs to be considered to evaluate his response. Right from their 1st meet, there has been an element of fascination/subconscious attraction for Imlie from Adi's side. He was clicking her pictures left & right whenever he would see her. Be it when he suddenly saw her in the boat ride or when he saw her in the fair. Even when he knew that she did not like him taking her pictures because she would make faces at him. This is not normal behaviour for Adi.
This was proven when Imlie asked him why he has taken so many pictures of people & he replied that he took pictures of people with their permission & when she countered that why he had taken her pictures without her permission,he had no answer. He just gave a generic statement that everyone loves getting their pictures clicked. So, he was definitely behaving out if his usual pattern where Imlie was concerned.
When SK told his personal story to Adi during the interview, Adi on his own realised that the girl who wanted to go to city for further studies was Imlie. At that moment, the protectiveness for her started in Adi. He was the one who wanted to spend more time with Imlie. When Meethi had told Adi that Imlie would take him to meet Chandu, he could make out from her face that she didn't want to do that so he quickly gave her a pickup time before she could give any excuse. Imlie was ready to leave him when he showed interest in going to that Manmilan but Adi stopped her from ditching him. It was not as if he could not go on his own.He anyways is used to roaming alone, but he subconsciously wanted to spend more time with her.
Also,he showed a lot of interest in her thoughts & beliefs, divulging his own. Then came the forced marriage fiasco. He tried to protect her against her own villagers right from the start of the encounter. But when they would not listen to him, he was ready to be killed. But Imlie in order to save his life, lied that he had promised to marry her. After that his protests stopped. Why? If he was willing to die a few seconds ago, he could have died protesting Imlie's lie. But he didn't to protect Imlie from the consequences of admitting to get married to him. The villagers might have killed Imlie as well after that.
With the marriage, he felt an even more overwhelming sense of responsibility towards her. He was angry & hurt but he never left her on her own. He did try to drop her off at the NGO but came back for her immediately on his own. He brought her home where Imlie lied that she had come to do housework seeing him being hesitant. So now that Imlie was safe in his home, he went on to ignore the truth of his marriage to her, went on to get married to Malini to take back control of his own life.
But throughout the marriage ceremonies he was focussed on Imlie. His protectiveness & sense of responsibility towards her went on increasing. That is the reason why he never made the effort to check the marriage's validity or get separated from Imlie in a legal way. He is an investigative reporter. He definitely would have had the knowledge & means to safeguard himself from the repercussions of this marriage. But he felt that she could be safe only with him. He tried once again to leave her in PD the second time, but you could see on his face that he was reluctant to leave her there. And then the gunshot incident happened, & his belief that she will be safe only with him got cemented. After that his care, worry & protectiveness for her were shown in more obvious ways.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if the forced marriage had not taken place. Would they still find a way to be a part of each other's life & fallen in love eventually or would their acquaintance end with the end of his trip? I for one believe they would because as shown time & again they were destined for each other.
Phew that is a lot of analysis.
