Mahashivaratri (the night of Shiva) is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in honour of the Hindu God, Lord Shiva, also known as the destroyer among the Trimurti. This festival marks the overcoming of darkness and ignorance in life.
Different legends describe and have mentioned the significance of this day. According to one of the legend in Shaivism (the worship of Lord Shiva), this is the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and of destruction. Also known as the tandav. According to another legend, this is the night when Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati. Another legend says that offering prayers to Shiva this night will help get rid of your sins and thus, receive salvation.
People observe this festival by praying and worshipping Shiva. They visit various temples and some fast throughout the day. Hymns are chanted of his name. Ardent devotees stay awake the entire night worshipping him.
According to The Theosophical Movement, Volume 72 "During the Vigil Night of Shiva, Mahashivaratri, we are brought to the moment of the interval between destruction and regeneration; it symbolizes the night when we must contemplate on that which watches the growth out of the decay."
