Chapter 28 – Hide ‘N Seek

Malhar’s helplessness pushed him to visit his wife at 1AM that night. He sat beside Kalyani and poured out his soul, but his voice woke up his sleeping beauty. Kalyani was up before he could leave and since the room was dark, he quickly hid behind the balcony curtains hoping that he would go unnoticed. But Kalyani was no ordinary girl, her senses were ensnared the minute she felt someone’s presence in her room.

Kalyani had seen a silhouette pass by and the first thing that popped into her head was that it was an intruder. She was definitely not one to go down without a fight, so she stealthily took out the pepper spray stashed beneath her pillow and got out of her bed. She said, “Listen, whoever you are, show yourself. I know you are in here. Don’t make me attack you, I have a brown belt in Karate.” as she slowly walked around scanning her room for the intruder. Malhar who heard her words, began imagining her prowess in the martial arts and was trying hard to hold in his laughter while standing still behind the curtain.

Kalyani stretched out her hand to the switch and turned it on but much to her dismay, the lights didn’t turn on. For once, the unannounced power outages in Aurangabad were in favor of Malhar. He slowly moved towards the door so that he could get away. At one point, Kalyani and Malhar were beside each other but the darkness kept her unaware of his position. As Malhar made further attempts to get away, the shadow created by his movements alerted Kalyani and she immediately turned around.

Kalyani’s defense mechanism kicked in full throttle and without hesitation, she used the pepper spray on him and Malhar screamed in pain. The minute she heard his voice, she dropped the spray bottle to the ground and covered her mouth in terror. She exclaimed, “Malhar ji, is that you? I am so sorry, I thought you were a burglar. Oh, my goodness!! I am so sorry Malhar ji. Here let me help you.” Kalyani grabbed on to Malhar’s hands and made him sit on her bed. She wiped off the excess pepper spray from his face with a soft towel and caressed his face in worry.

The burning sensation caused by the pepper spray was still tormenting Malhar’s eyes, so Kalyani grabbed her water bottle and pulled him to the balcony. She continuously splashed water on his eyes until he felt a little better. Malhar relaxed as he was finally able to open his eyes. Kalyani held his face in her palms and checked to see if he was doing fine. The worry in her eyes unknowingly reassured him that she hadn’t strayed far from him. Malhar was lost in her thoughts while she took him back into the room and made him sit on her bed. She again wiped his face with the towel and said, “Malhar ji, are you feeling better now? I am so sorry; I had no clue that it was you.”

The angst in Kalyani’s eye were reflective of her concern for him but Malhar was still busy gazing at her. She shook him and said, “Malhar ji, I am talking to you. Why are you so silent? Are you ok? Are your eyes still hurting?” Malhar’s trance was broken by her words and he realized what was coming next. He simply said, “It’s ok Kalyani, it was an honest mistake. I am fine now” and got up from her bed but Kalyani wasn’t done yet, she forcibly made him sit back down and said, “What’s fine, Malhar ji? Your eyes are bloodshot, you must be in so much pain right now. You know what, I’ll get some ice from the kitchen, that’ll definitely help. And mind you Malhar ji, don’t move a muscle until I return.”

Malhar was in awe of Kalyani’s authoritative command over him. He smiled and nodded his head in agreement while she stepped out of her room. As Malhar obediently awaited her return, the lights came back on and so did Kalyani. Kalyani walked over to him and placed the bowl of ice on her nightstand. She held his chin in one hand and began making circles around his eyes with the ice cube to relieve his plain.

Kalyani’s care was all the medicine he needed; the pain became bearable by her mere touch. And he breathed a sigh of relief. Kalyani on the other hand was still in shock, she asked him, “By the way Malhar ji, what were you doing in my room at 1am? And more importantly why the hell didn’t you identify yourself when I asked you? Goodness gracious!! Malhar ji, I would have gone all ballistic on you today, had you not screamed.” Malhar knew that these questions were inevitable, but he was not in any position to answer her. His mind began racing to come up with an excuse and he finally fumbled, “ummmmm…I…was actually…..looking for…..your phone charger…my phone ran out of juice and I wasn’t able to find my charger so I came to your room to get yours.” The awkwardness in his tone was enough for her to realize that he was lying but at that very moment, Malhar’s phone betrayed him when it lit up upon receiving a text message, leaving him at a loss for words.

Kalyani held in her laughter and naughtily said to him, “But Malhar ji, I thought your phone was dead, whose phone is this then, huh?” Malhar was stupefied while Kalyani was in awe of how cutely he was trying to evade her line of questioning. In his defense, he said, “Kalyani, why are you interrogating me like I am some criminal. I meant that my phone was running on low battery earlier. I just came in to check which charger you had and by the way before I could say anything, you emptied that bottle of pepper spray on me. Anyways, I am going to bed now, I’m feeling very sleepy.” His fidgety behavior was making it all the more difficult for Kalyani to hide her laughter. Malhar realized that he was caught, so he quickly skedaddled out of her room.

Kalyani on the other hand was laughing her heart out and said to herself, “How is this even possible? Does Malhar ji actually feel something for me? If it is what I think it is then ACP Rane brace yourself, I won’t stop until I find out how you feel.”
