Honestly the books don't make Snape any better. In fact, if anything, the books made me hate Snape more. His whole arc was stupid. J.K. Rowling actually had a better character and redemption arc in Draco Malfoy - how a "typical" Slytherin realizes that he cannot be so typical and hurt the people around him. Such an awesome arc they had, but instead she gave the redemption arc to a sorry character like Snape. Snape gets so much love because Alan Rickman did such an awesome job with the character.
Yes, I agree about Draco Malfoy's character arc. There was definitely a better way to draw his redemption, that I felt through the movies. For Snape, since I am yet see him closely through the books, I am curious about what he could have done differently or what he shouldn't have done. Alan Rickman was so good with the kids, I couldn't hate Snape so much. :)
