I have this wish that they do get separated in the riots and Uday stays back in Lahore and Vashma comes to Amritsar with his family. And when the government finally make decision to unite the families in (I think it was 1949 or 50) correct me if I am wrong

They said QH to each other in the storeroom and did Gardharva vivah, so sorta both. But wont it be the other way round? Like how will Uday stay in Lahore and Vashma go to Amritsar? Are you referencing something like Veer Zaara? Yeah they can meet again in 1949, when the reconcilations happened.
