MUMBAI: Acclaimed writer and producer Mrinal Jha is born to hold pen and create wonderful stories. Miss Jha is the woman behind many successful shows who has created wonders with her impeccable writing skills. Her vast body of work as a script writer includes popular shows like Kaahin Kissii Roz, Kya Haadsa Kya Haqeeqat, Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan, Banoo Main Teri Dulhan, Amber Dhara, Chhoona Hai Aasmaan, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Santaan, Kasturi, Maayka and the list goes on.
She, along with her husband Abhigyan Jha produced Kaali- Ek Agnipariksha for Star Plus in 2010. She was also the producer of Jay Hind! a standup comedy show for the Internet platform.
Mrinal Jha is soon rolling out the sequel of a hit show Qubool Hai which will be produced under her banner MAJ (Mrinal Abhigyan Jha) Productions. The series will continue to star Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti in the lead roles and it will be launched on ZEE5.
TellyChakkar got in touch with Mrinal who spoke in brief about the rebooted version of Qubool Hai and more…

What is the driving force that gets you to create palatable content for all age groups?
I think the primary force is to always try and narrate interesting stories staying true to originality. When you attempt to do so, you automatically stand out and create a variation in genres, tone, plot line and that’s how you can engage with the audiences, by giving them something new and interesting each time. If the primary focus and intention is to always entertain the audience, you will always look for and create stories which have intrinsic variety and a sort of newness about it.
Which role do you enjoy the most: being a producer or a screenwriter?
Of course, production does have its perks allowing one to execute and realize something the way you’ve envisaged it and I feel that is a great advantage of being a producer. Though, if you ask me as a person then primarily, I am a writer. However, I have turned to also being a producer so that I can execute my perspective closer to my vision. I have been on the production front in the past but it was essentially because there were certain stories that I wanted to unfold independently to ensure that it gets executed in the way that I had foreseen.
Who are your competitors and what do you see as a competition in the ever-evolving TV industry?
No, I don’t think I operate that way at all. I think there is room for everyone especially for those who have unique, individual ways of functioning. I would just advise that one should focus on creating their own space and letting their talents do the rest of the job. I believe in co – existence than competition – all you have to focus on is to maintain your originality to find your spot under the sun.
With increased online viewing, which of your other shows deserve to make a return in the OTT space?
Well, there would be a competition for that! (...)
Tell us about MAJ as a team? Do you both have symmetrical views or poles apart?
Interestingly, Abhigyan and I go a long way both professionally and personally. I think in that sense, we were lucky because we began our career writing together. We have a lot of synergy in the way we function and our years of collaboration make it a breeze for both of us to operate optimally. To put it in perspective, we’ve been working together since as long as Jay Hind! and Kaali. We understand each other’s style and play to each other’s strengths. Abhigyan is very creative and adept with productions and does tremendously well at the execution part of it. He is also a director and that’s another feather in his cap! He is very good with the bird’s eye view of everything and I tend to get into the details, especially the creative segment. In the larger scheme of things, we work very well as a team because we handle different aspects and they complement each other.
Will QH 2.0 be a continuity of the TV show or will you narrate a completely new chapter for the fans?
It is going to be a completely new chapter in terms of the storyline because the last season of the show was quite some time ago and its return is set on a completely new platform - OTT. In that sense, it’s a different plot and we have widened the scope of the story. While we have retained the original values and sketch of Asad and Zoya and their chemistry, we have also maintained their relationship with a couple of other characters who were a part of the original story. We have stayed true to the original flavour of the protagonists although we’ve put them in newer situations and played with their optics towards the world. We have also created a new setting around them. We just cannot wait to unveil QH 2.0 to the audience!
If not KSG & Surbhi then who would the fans witness as leads of QH 2.0?
I would have to say that KSG and Surbhi both have been so perfect as Asad and Zoya that I honestly cannot imagine a show without their pair. They are actually brilliant as Asad and Zoya by themselves and are wonderful together. They have fantastic chemistry between them and the immense love bestowed by fans is a witness to this case.
What else do you have in the pipeline for this year?
‘The Socho Project,’ is set to launch this year and of course QH 2.0 both under the banner of MAJ Productions. Both the shows are vastly different in terms of the narrative and the unfolding of the plot. (...)
Both Qubool Hai and The Socho Project happening together this year is a dream come true for me. I couldn’t be more excited because we are doing such non-identical shows at the same time.
