Virat felt a strange bliss as he got into his car and started driving home. He was quite late... no, very late, he decided. But he didn't feel the usual exhaustion he felt while leaving the police station. He felt enthusiastic for a change, and he knew that it had nothing to do with going back to the comfort of his home after a long day's work. It wasn't because he was looking forward to spending time with his family. Hell, he didn't even want to spend much time with his family these days, save 2 - 3 people. He just felt... happy. Something he hadn't felt in a long time.
His thoughts drifted to the conversation he had with his DIG earlier, when he was invited to the party that was hosted by the DIG himself. If it were any other day, Virat would have said yes without thinking, and his family would have also been happy seeing how much the higher authorities loved and respected Virat. But today was different. The only thing that he wanted at that moment was to go back home... to Sai.
"Enjoy young man! Aisa waqt baar baar nahi aayega..." his DIG had told him when he politely declined the offer. Of course he knew that. The moments that he was happy... just genuinely happy, when he let himself laugh freely, without anything weighing him down, were hard to come by.
But with Sai, he had begun to live every bit of those moments. He admired the way she found joy in the simplest of things and so easily made him a part of those joyful moments. He distinctly remembered the way she jumped around the room when he told her that her results would be good, and the way the her eyes lit up the minute the spotted him holding the balloons and the candy floss... buddhiya ke baal, as she called it.
But his most favourite moment was on the banks of the River Naag, where they went after completing her college admission process. Playing along the banks of River Naag, throwing stones into the water to make them skip, it was memory so personal to him... the one that he shared with his Jiva. It was a memory that could never be shared with anyone else. But sharing that memory with her just came so naturally.
It didn't feel wrong, like she was taking over the memories he had with Jiva. Instead, it felt like she was the only person he could relive that memory with. She was the one person who brought out the fun-loving, carefree Shiva that otherwise surfaced only around his Jiva.
"Samrat would love her..." he thought, as he smiled to himself. Sai was very much like Samrat in many ways. Both of them had a strong sense of justice and neither of them could see anyone in pain. Both of them stood for what they believed in without budging. He had also sensed that aura of mischief that surround Sai, just like Samrat. The only thing that set them miles apart was Sai's quick temper. Samrat did not blow up the way Sai did. He knew the art of picking his battles carefully while Sai would just dive headlong into any fight without thinking.
"But you just cannot help liking her... admiring her even..." thought Virat. There was something about Sai that you cannot help but admire. Her courage, her sense of fairness, her never-back-down attitude, her willingness to go on despite all the obstacles in her path... she was a true fighter. And she was just so passionate about everything she did. Everything she did, she did with love.
He would never say it out loud to her, but sometimes, he envied her. He envied the way she tirelessly fought for everything she believed in, even when the odds weren't in her favour. He envied the way she never accepted defeat and emerged victorious in all her battles. He envied her fierce loyalty to those she loved, and the way she would go to the ends of the earth for them. But most importantly, he envied the way she viewed the world with so much optimism, even after everything she had been through. Now he understood why Kamal sir took so much pride in her. It was not just because she was the state topper in her 12th boards, or because she was a model student through and through. It was because of the person she grew up to be - a survivor, a fighter. It was because of that unwavering courage with which she took on the world, and made it hers. Sai was not just Kamal sir's pride now, she was his too. He was proud of her, proud to be associated with her.
When he first met her, he had brushed her off as a spoilt girl with temper issues. But that very day, when she had barged into his quarters, demanding that he issue her aaba's VRS, he realized that she was a force to be reckoned with. Though her rudeness and impolite behaviour angered him, he had admired the courage with which she fought tooth and nail with a Senior Police Officer for what she believed right.
He loved the person he became when he was with her. He liked that he could shed down the burden of being Virat Chavan, the pride of the Chavan family, and just be Virat... or Gabbar, that happy, playful man he could naturally transform into, when he was with Sai. He loved how she just took his hand and made him a part of her beautiful world, where he felt like he naturally belonged. Everything seemed to fall in place with her. He felt like he could breathe a bit more easily without everyone's expectations suffocating him. He could smile naturally, without the title of the Chavan Parivaar's Chaheeta Beta weighing him down. He was in love... in love with the person he naturally became around her, because that was the real Virat - person underneath all the responsibilities that his family and the rest of the world entrusted on him. And if this isn't love... what is?
His car came to a halt as he slammed the brakes. He was finally home. His eyes scanned the doorway, only to see a welcome sight - Sai waiting for him at the door, her eyes twinkling as she ran towards him.
"Finally Virat sir, aap aa gaye. Main toh kabse wait kar rahi thi aapke liye. Aaj mera first day tha na college mein. Mujhe aapko sab kuch batana hai, chaliye." she said, excitement evident in her voice.
Without thinking, she took his hand in hers and started walking inside, oblivious to the glares that the rest of the family were giving them. His eyes briefly glanced towards his family in the living room as they climbed the stairs. He knew that they probably waiting to pounce on them, to accuse them of some mishap that probably never happened. But he would worry about it later. For now, he was just content to let her lead him to his room... their room, and talk about her first day of college, as they spent the entire night in each other's company.
