I have heard this from many people. It differs from region to region, for us - we do add jaggery in Daal and sugar in some beans/pulse sabzi( That is very little just to balance out the lemon flavor - I personally add less than a teaspoon for 4-5 people).
Other than that, we don't add sugar to anything. Ours is rather spicy.
