Part 1
Neil stepped out from the cab as he arrived home. He paid the rent and moved towards his bunglow. He looked around and smiled feeling the atmosphere of his hometown. He has been completing his graduation in Delhi. Being a big and crowded city, it had all the luxries but devoid of fresh air and that special fragrance of soil, the calm environment his home town Patiala had. He missed his town and home so much, more than it he missed his mother.
He lost his father when he was just 15. Since then his mother, Shakuntala Devi had not only raised him single handedly but also took care of all the properties and family business alone. Shakuntala Devi was strong willed lady. She believed in her culture strongly. According to Neil, she was somewhat conservative but she had strong set of beliefs which she would not give up for anyone. She faced many hardships after her husbandâs demise but she took it all and didnât let anything come in between her sonâs studies. But now she was growing old. Even she needed support of Neil but Neil was adamant for doing post graduation while Shakuntala wanted him to get settled down in life and learn to manage business while she was capable of guiding him. This one topic was often the cause little fights and disagreement between the mother and son. Apart from this also the difference in thinking process and views about business and society in general often caused Neil to say that his mother has grown old and she should try more to accept views of new generation. Shakuntala devi use to try but often fail to bridge this generation gap.
Neil looked at his left and he could see their mango farm. They were big landlord of patiala and owned many such farms. But mango being his favourite fruit, this farm which was also located just in side of their bunglow was his favourite.
Neil smiled as he remembered his childhood. He used to run in the whole farm in search of perfect mangoes. He thought to take a stroll before going inside house. He turned towards the farm and went inside to relive his childhood. He had his eyes closed and was moving slowly when he suddenly fell down as his leg twisted because of the small pit full of water.
Neil fell down, face on the ground and splashes of water and mud on his clothes and face. Before he could have understood what happen and stand up again he heard laughter. He looked at his right side and there were bunch of kids laughing on him hysterically, making fun of him. But what caught his attention was a beautiful girl laughing with them, sitting on a mango tree.
Neil was angry on those bratty kids for laughing on him like that instead of helping him but he forgot his anger when his eyes landed on that girl. Her attire looked weird for a girl's clothing. She was in plain jeans and boys collar t shirt. Neil looked at her face, She had cutest nose in the world, he thought. Her eyes, melting chocolate with caramel color, almond shaped, her lips, perfectly shaped light pink color like those barbie dolls and not to be missed, her hairâŚ.her long hairs which came upto her waist, somewhat curly, dark brown, unkempt, unruly.... wildâŚ.her whole persona was wild. He had seen many beautiful girls in Delhi but she was different from them. The polished, sophisticated, almost fake personalities of those girls seems very dull in front of this raw, small town beauty. Her laughterâŚ.carefree and captivatingâŚ.he couldnât stop himself from staring her in order to drink her beauty as much as he could while the girl and the kids gang kept laughing on him.
The care taker of the farm came running towards him and helped him out then he ran after kids gang with a stick and all of them jumped from the mango tree one by one and started running in gateâs direction. That girl also jumped from the tree and started running but not before taking lots of mangoes in a duppatta which she was carrying in her hands.
The care taker ran after her and she looked back to save herself but when she looked forward again she had collided into a rock hard chest and fell down taking her mango potli along. âOh maa!â she said as she started rubbing her head. âHahahaâŚ.caught you finallyâŚ.I know you are the leader of those mango thieves gang. Today I have caught you red handed now your father also wont be able to save you when I present you before badi maalkin.âThe care taker said as he stood before her with his hands on his waist. The girl gasped as the meaning of his words dawned upon her. She was not worried about that badi maalkin. She had fooled that old lady quite a few times but if her father comes to know about her mischief she will be grounded at least for a week. Her father worked as an account officer in the estate of Oberois. He was their loyal employee and he had warned her many times not to give any trouble to badi maalkin. She started praying for some miracle to save her from this situation.
âIts ok Satpal kaka. Let it beâŚ..let her have these mangoes. We wont suffer much loss due to these handful of mangoes.â Neil said and asked care taker Satpal kaka to go back to his rest room and donât report this incident to Shakuntala devi. The girl thanked God for listening to her prayers. She threw a glance at this new guy. He was not stupid as she thought him to be when he fell down. That satpal kaka listened to him means he must be someone important but who? She has not seen him since she came here to live with her father. Maybe he is that old ladyâs son about whom she keeps bragging about to the whole world.
âWhen someone falls, one should offer them support not laugh on them.â Neil said as he gave his hand to her to help her in standing up again. âI donât need anybodyâs help.â She hit his hand and instead stood up herself. âHow rude? I offered you support, saved you from being scolded and this is how you thank me?â Neil replied offended. âI didnât ask for your help.â She replied rudely and turned to go when he caught her hand. âAt least tell me your name.â Neil asked her. He couldnât take it when people argued back with him. Coming from a rich and privileged family and being pampered by his mother all his life he was quite arrogant himself so he couldnât take anybodyâs tantrums but donât know why he loved it when this girl challenged his attitude with her own. Although he felt that tinge of anger on her rude reply and he twisted her wrist in a reaction. âLeave me, ouch it hurts.â Neilâs anger went away as soon as it came listening to her request. He immediately loosened his grip.
Mini didnt leave this opportunity as she mocked him by making faces, "Tell me your name....huh! bada aaya....akdu kahi ka.....look at your face...dirty like your attitude." Mini laughed again and was about to run when Neil caught her hand again. This time he not only twisted it but also pulled her with a jerk towards himself. He was seething in anger. Nobody ever dared to talk to him in this tone. "Oh maa! leave me you jerk." Mini pleaded again. "Pehle tameez se baat karna seekho." Neil replied. "Ok...ok...sorry....leave my hand please...its hurting." Mini requested. Neil loosened his grip but not left her hand. âTell me your name and Iâll let you go.â Neil said again.
Mini gave him angry glare as if shooting daggers at him. âMini, come soon, your papa is coming this way only, he will see you.â One of the kid from her gang warned her. Mini panicked listening to that and tried harder to free her hand. Neil smiled as he got to know her name, not by her but atleast from her friend. He freed her hand and she ran towards the gate muttering "Tumhe toh main dekh lungi you akdu." Neil smiled at her. âMiniâŚ..cuteâŚ.nice meeting you Mini.â Neil thought and went to his house.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âSurprise surprise!â Neil whispered in his motherâs ears as he covered her eyes with his hands when she was busy doing puja. âOh my God! Neil, you hereâŚ.suddenly? You said you wont be coming after exams as you need to enquire about your MBA and different colleges.â Shakuntala devi was happily surprised seeing her son in front of her. âThat was just to tease you and give you this surprise. I have already completed all the formalities. Iâll be joining one of the top college there as soon as their session starts, which is two months from now. So till then I wanted to spend time with you.â Neil informed.
Shakuntala Devi as usual showered her son with love as she cooked all her favorite dishes and made sure he ate all of it in front of her eyes. âBas maa, ab aur khaaya to pet phat jayega.â Neil pushed away the food plate and stood up. âArre, abhi toh sweet dish baki haiâŚteri sabse favoriteâŚkheer.â Shakuntala put the kheer in bowl and offered it to Neil. âKeep it in my room. I will eat it later.â Neil went to wash his hands. He then came in his room and opened his suitcase and gave beautiful saree to his mother as a gift.
âAb is umr mein is saree ka main kya karungi?â Shakuntala said. âWhy? You didnât like it?â Neil asked, hurt from her answer. âIts beautifulâŚbutâŚbut very bright and glossyâŚit would look nice on your wife not on your mother.â Shakuntala answered. âBut there is a time in my marriageâŚ.I still have to complete the education then learn to handle the business.â Neil replied.
âGood that this topic came up. I wanted to talk to you about it from some time now.â Shakuntala said. âWhat is there to talk? You already know my answer.â Neil replied getting irritated slightly as his mother again picked up this topic. He was of the opinion that he is too young for marriage and will only get settled down after completing his post graduation.
âHaan haanâŚpata hai tumhari zidd lekin is bar meri bhi zidd hai tumhari shadi karwakar rahungi. You stay at Delhi all the time but have you ever thought about me? I am all alone here. With my old age is getting difficult by the day to manage everything all alone. And this time our pandit ji has also told me that your kundli has some mangal dosh so its better you get married now or there is no shubh muhurat for years to come.â Shakuntala Devi continued her rant.
Neil had answer to her every question. But when she played the kundli card, he was speechless. He knew his mother was superstitious and wont listen anything against her beliefs. He thought of avoiding her and go out for a while so that his maa would forget about his wedding for sometime. âI just remembered maa, my friend Mickey wanted to meet me so I am going and will return in evening.â Neil tried to escape but Shakuntala was ready this time. âHaan haanâŚchale jao hamesha ki tarah bahana kar keâŚyou donât love me enoughâŚ.wont even fulfill smallest of my wishesâŚyou wont get married even if I had asked you for it on my death bed.â Shakuntala played the ultimate emotional blackmail card, no son has ever invented a reply for that. So finally Neil accepted defeat.
âMaa, donât say any such things ever. Ok, fine! Aap jeetiâŚ.I am ready for the marriage.â Neil replied as he hugged his mother getting all emotional. Shakuntala smiled in triumph. âI knew you wont deny this time so I already selected a girl for you.â Shakuntala went and came back with a photo of a girl.
âWhat!! Maa, this is not right. I have agreed for the marriage but that doesnât mean you will force your choice on me.â Neil finally protested. âAt least see the photo first.â Shakuntala handed him the photo. Neil saw the picture. It was the photo of very beautiful girl. Fair complexion, round face, chubby cheeks and big eyes. The girl was really cute. Anyone could fall for her but Neil didnât know why the photo didnât impress him much.
âYa, she is okâŚâ Neil replied disinterestedly and gave the photo back. âWhat? Just ok? Are you out of your mind. She is Preet Khanna. Most eligible bachelorette of our community. Beautiful, highly educated, knows cooking, stitching and weaving, speaks fluent englishâŚ.what more you want?â Shakuntala devi was shocked with cold reply from Neil.
âMaa, I want a wife not a manager or servant or cook.â Neil answered. âTum pehle batao isme kya kami haiâŚitni sundar to hai.â Shakuntala Devi asked. âSundar haiâŚparâŚ.par wo baat nahi haiâŚ.wo jo ek bar dekho toh sidhe dil mein utar jayeâŚwaisa kuch nahi hai ismeâŚjaiseâŚ.oh how should I explain this to you?â Neil threw up hands in frustration as he himself was confused what he wanted to say and what he was searching for while looking at Preetâs photo.
âOffo! Tum aur tumhare nakhreâŚ.tell me if she is not beautiful enough as per your standards then what kind of girl you want?â Shakuntala asked getting irritated now. âMaa, its not only about beautyâŚits about the whole personalityâŚtheâŚtheâŚâ Neil was speechless again as he didnât know how to give words to his feelings. He closed his eyes for introspection as he tried to find out the answer of all his confusion and what he was looking for. The image of girl he met few hours ago in their mango farms flashed before his eyes. That weird girl with long unruly, wild hair. That gold color complexion, those perfectly shaped lips and cute button nose and not to forget that fire in those soulful eyes. Her carefree laughter, her fighting spirit, her attitudeâŚ.MiniâŚ.her name.â Neil opened his eyes at once when he realised he was thinking about that mango thief who made fun of him.
âHello! Where are you lost son?â Shakuntala waved her hand in front of his face and Neil turned around to hide his expressions and calm down racing heartbeats. âNothingâŚI was just thinkingâŚ..I cant marry anyone just by seeing the photoâŚ.I want to meet this girl at least once.â Neil stated his opinion. âArre, bas itni si baat. Samjho ho gaya kaam. I will talk to Preetâs parents and arrange for your meeting tomorrow only.â Shakuntala replied feeling ecstatic as she was confident Neil could not reject Preet as she was âsarvgun sampannâ according to her. Shakuntala arranged for their meeting at Preetâs house only and prayed to God that Neil will say yes to her while Neil couldnât sleep as he kept remembering Mini again and again.

âMaa, what is this? You know I donât believe in this shagun apshagun. It irritates me.â Neil complained when he got to know that his maa Shakuntala devi is not accompanying him to Preet Khannaâs house because a cat crossed her path in the morning while she was returning from temple and now she thinks that if she goes with Neil then definitely something bad will happen. According to her, Neil was going to meet his would be wife. She was so confident that Neil would like Preet and would say yes to marry her at once and she didnât want anything to bring bad luck today.
âYou donât believe in it but I believe in it. And we are talking here about your futureâŚ.your marriageâŚI donât want anything to go wrong.â Shakuntala tried to make him understand. âBut maa, it would look awkward that a prospective groom has come alone to see the girl. What will I do there? Its my first time meeting someone like thisâŚ.I donât know anything.â Neil reasoned. âOffo! Aisa kuych nahi hoga. Kuch awkward nahi lagega. Maine Preet ki papa ko phone karke sab kuch samjha diya hai. You just go, meet her, ask her whatever you want to knowâŚit will all be okâŚ.I am sure once you see her naâŚ.you wont be able to say no.â Shakuntala replied and literally pushed him outside the door.
Having no other option Neil sighed and started walking. He stopped when he was just about to cross the premises. He turned around and before he knew his legs carried him towards the mango farm. He looked here and there to see if that mango thief Mini and her gang was here or not. There was no one. He sighed and turned to go back. He didnât know why he wanted to see her in the first place and when he didnât find her here why he was disappointed.
Since Preetâs house was nearby Neil thought of going on bike instead of car. If his maa was with him she would have never allowed him to take bike. His maa believed in showing off their wealth and riches to everyone. And she would have never left an opportunity to show off in front of âladki waleâ, Neil thought and laughed. He respected his maa a lot. She had earned every bit of respect in this town with her hard work and lived upto Oberoi clanâs image but she was a bit pompous when it comes to society, class, wealth, family prestige and all. And he having spent most of his time in Delhi where all he interacted with all sorts of people in his student life, he was much more practical and understanding. But he knew inspite of being all this his maa was good at heart.
Neil reached Preetâs house. There he saw some boys playing gully cricket. The one who was batting hit the six and the ball broke the rear view mirror of Neilâs beloved Harley Davidson. Neil picked up the ball and looked at his bike. His heart broke down with the rear view mirror. âAey, ball wapas karo.â One of the boy said. âWapas? My foot. You know what you did hereâŚyou hit my favorite bikeâŚis this the place to play cricket? Call your parents I will complain to them.â Neil shouted in anger. âHey you!â The one who has hit the shot spoke now. Neil kept looking at that âboyâ who now had now removed his cap in anger and his long hair came open. He marched towards Neil now angrily and Neil got the shock of his life when he identified that âboyâ as that mango thief girl Mini.
âDo whatever you want. Jisse bhi complaint karni hai kar lenaâŚyou akduâŚnow give our ball back.â Mini said in attitude. Neil just kept looking at her with open mouth. She was again wearing plain jeans and boys collar t shirt. She had tied her hair in a bun and wearing a cap. From some distance she indeed looked like a boy. He saw all her friendsâŚthe same gangâŚall were boys though. May be she is tom boyish. He concluded.
When Mini saw him standing there like a statue. She snatched the ball from his hands. She turned around and jerked her hair behind which hit Neilâs face and walked away in attitude again. She gave ball to another boy and they continued to play. Neil on the other hand was again mesmerised by her raw beauty and fiery attitude.
Preetâs father, Mr. Khanna came outside hearing the commotion and saw Neil. âArre Neil beta you have comeâŚ.come inside. Please donât mind these stupid children. All are bratsâŚthat Mini is their gang leader. She is spoiling them all.â Mr. Khanna replied as he looked at Mini like she was some alien. Donât know why her father doesnât keep her in control.â He commented and welcomed Neil on the door and took him inside with respect. He sat quietly at one place. Mr and Mrs. Khanna chatted with him for a while then they called Preet. Neil looked at her. A cute girl wearing heavy punjabi suit carrying tray of tea and refreshments came from inside the kitchen.
âShe is Preet, our daughter.â Mrs. Khanna made the introduction. Preet sat down opposite Neil and looked down shyly. âArre beta, kuch toh loâŚye sab tumhare liye hi haiâŚPreet ne apne haatho se banaya hai.âMrs. Khanna didnât leave the opportunity to boast about her daughterâs cooking skills. Neil gave a small smile as he took tea cup. âToh beta, puchhiye aap jo bhi puchhna chahte ho Preet se.â Mr. Khanna said.
âYahaâŚ.I meanâŚ.with you guys sitting here? Wouldnât it be better if we get sometime alone?â Neil said nervously. âYeah, we understandâŚok we are just in another room Preet beta.â Mrs. Khanna said and gestured her husband to come along.
âSo PreetâŚright?â Neil started the conversation. Preet just blushed in response. âWhat have you studied?â Neil asked. âJi maineâŚ.uhâŚwoâŚâ Preet hesitated but Neil heard her motherâs voice from inside. âShe has done MA in Sociology.â Neil looked back and found Mr. and Mrs. Khanna were peeping from a small window. He felt weird but decided to let it go. âSo what are your hobbies?â Neil asked again. âI like doing puja every morning and evening.â Preet replied as she blushed some more. âThatâs ok but what do you do to kill time?â Neil asked again. âUhâŚto kill timeâŚIâŚâ Preet hesitated again as she started thinking what to say when Neil again heard her motherâs voice. âShe do lots of things like stitching, weaving, cooking even singingâŚshe can sing right now if you wantâŚPreet beta sing your favorite bhajanâŚâ "No no no...its not needed." Neil replied hurriedly.
Neil was frustrated now by the constant disturbance by her parents. âJi aap inhe bolne dijiye na. Aap kyu bar bar beech mein bol rahi hai.â He said it at last. âWo kya haiâŚhamari beti thodi sharmili hai.â Mrs. Khanna replied. âToh agar inse main shadi ke baad kuch puchhunga toh ye khud batayengi ya tab bhi jawab dene ke liye aap ko bulayengi?â Neil taunted hoping that her parents would stop interfering but they just smiled sheepishly and continued to jump in between.
Neil noticed that Preet might be beautiful but she is like some decorative dollâŚ.might be pleasing to eyes but low on self confidence, very docile, domestic. Doesnât even give a proper reply forget about engaging in a good conversation. He didnât want his wife to be like robot who does things as per his commands. He wanted to have smart, interesting life partner with a personality of her own.
Neil was lost in his thought when again Mini hit a shot and this time their ball broke Khannaâs window glass and directly came in the room where Neil and Preet were sitting. While Mr. Khanna was busy in fighting with other children, Mini marched in the room un ashamedly and picked up the ball. She was about to leave but noticed Neil and Preet. She saw Preet was all decked up in heavy dress and jewellry and all kinds of sweets and snacks were placed at the table. She at once understood that Neil has come to see Preet for marriage. Though she really didnât care about it but this manâŚhe has taken up fight with her two times now. How could she leave him like that.
âPreet, come onâŚitne bure din aa gaye hain tumhare ki tum is akdu se shadi kar rahi ho?â Mini asked loudly. Preet gasped at her audacity and she tried to shut Miniâs mouth. âKya matlab tumaharaâŚkya burai hai mujhme?âNeil asked as he was offended. âKoi achhai bhi toh nahi hai.â Mini snapped back. âToh tumme kaunsi achhai haiâŚyou jungli billi.â Neil pointed finger at her. âHuhâŚkya bolaâŚ.you akdu, sadu kahi keâŚ.â Mini said as she marched towards him and pushed him back on the chair. Neil sat down on the chair with a thud and all the tea from the cup he was holding fell down on his shirt. Mini couldnât stop laughing seeing his condition. Hearing her laughter Neil looked up at her angrily to give reply but again he was captivated by her carefree laughter. He kept looking at her and couldnât stop himself from smiling. In Miniâs lively presence Preetâs dull personality become even more evident. Neil kept looking both the girls as he finally got the answer what his heart wanted.
âNeil! What have you done? Mr. Khanna called me just right now. You said no to Preet? Isse achha rishta tumhe nahi milegaâŚshe is ideal bahu for this khandan. Sarvgun sampannâŚ.why you rejected her?â Shakuntala devi asked from Neil finally coming out of the shock she got when she learned that Neil rejected her choice.
âShe may be ideal bahu material but I am not looking for that in my life partner. I want someone who can be my equalâŚunderstands me, talk with meâŚshare my problems and happinessâŚsomeone with whom I can have a good conversationâŚare you getting my point?â Neil tried to explain. âBeta ye chhoti jagah haiâŚyaha ladkiyan aisi hi hoti haiâŚsankochi swabhav kiâŚtumhe jaise ladki chahiye wo yaha kaise milegiâŚkahi tumne Delhi mein hi koi ladki dekh toh nahi rakhi?â Shakuntala asked suspiciously.
âNo maa, if that was the case I had never said yes for meeting Preet.â Neil replied. âThen, I will find some new rishta for you. âShakuntala devi decided. âNo maa, there is a girl in my mindâŚ.and she is from Patiala itself. I met her two three times butâŚoh she hasnât left my mind ever sinceâŚshe is so beautifulâŚsoâŚâ Neil replied remembering Mini. âAchha samajh gayiâŚye toh batao ye ladki hai kaun jisne tumpar is kadar jaadu kar diya hai ki tumhe uske siwa aur koi dikhta hi nahi?â Shakuntala devi asked getting a little bit jealous as this was the first time his son was talking about some girl in this way. He has never disobeyed her but now..due to this mystery girl he was even arguing with her.
âMiniâŚ.I asked from Mr. Khanna about her when she came in their home. He told me she is Mini Khurana. She is our estate's account officer Mr. Ashok Khuranaâs daughter.â Neil answered her query.
âWHAT??? MINI!!! Ashokâs daughter Mini? That mango theif Mini? ThatâŚthatâŚ.uncouth, uncultured âŚ.jhalli Mini? That tom boyish Mini?...oh noâŚoh my godâŚpleaseâŚhave some mercy on meâŚit cant be happeningâŚ.my son cant like that girl.â Shakuntala devi almost fainted as she continued her rant.
âMaa, donât over react âŚok? I know she is different from other girls but thatâs what makes her unique.â Neil defended his choice. âHey bhagwan! Aisa kaise ho sakta hai? Mere rajkumar jaise bĂŞte ko is puri duniya mein pasand bhi aayi to kaunâŚwo jhalliâŚbadtameez ladki?â Shakuntala cried some more.
âEnough maa, she is not that bad. In fact she is the most prettiest girl I have ever seen. I will only marry her.â Neil announced his decision.â No way, I am not going to bow down in front of your stubbornness this time. You are just attracted towards herâŚI donât know what you have seen in herâŚbut this is just an attractionâŚI wont let you ruin your life like this.â Shakuntala devi tried to make him understand. âI know maa whats the difference between attraction and loveâŚ.what I feel for herâŚthe constant need to see her, to talk to herâŚto have her around meâŚits not mere attractionâŚ.its deep.â Neil argued.
âNo I will not allow this to happenâŚ.wo ladki is khandan ki bahu kabhi nahi ban sakti.â Shakuntala devi gave her final decision. âOk, then you also listen. I will only get married to Mini or else I wonât ever get married.â Neil also announced his decision.
Some days passed both mother and son were not talking to each other. None of them was ready to agree to othersâ wish. Shakuntala devi passed by Neilâs room where she saw him packing his bags. She couldnât stay silent anymore.
âWhere are you going?â Neil didnât reply anything and kept packing. âI asked something . Where are you going?â âI am leaving.â Neil replied coldly. âWhat? But why? You said you have come for two months. âShakuntala asked. âWhat will do here if you are not talking to me and not even fulfilling my wish. I know you will somehow force me or do your emotional blackmail to make me say yes to Preet. But this time I will not let it happen. I love Mini and I will only get married to her. If you force me then I will never come back here.â Neil said with determination.
Shakuntala gasped listening to him. Never ever her son has argued or angry with her this much. That Mini must have done some magic on him. She wanted to oppose him but he was his only sonâŚonly family. To her, his happiness was more important that her choice, than anything else in this world. He has never shown this much stubbornness before. Shakuntala decided that before her only son turn against her she should better fulfill his wish. And she decided that however jhalli that Mini was but if her son wants her then she will be the bahu of Oberoi khandan.
