🥳🥳Happy Birthday Rockingsunny 🥳🥳
Anurag I think. Shruti in barfi and her dilemma was shown very relatably.
Not director but my fav person ever to write about female characters is rabindranath tagore. Noone writes women or undeestands them like he did.
Imtiaz Ali? Well, He is good at creating interesting female "fictional" characters but they're far from reality. That's just about it. They're characters who don't feel like real women, in real life. For e.g. Geet was a lovable, charming character in Jab We Met but she was still a pretty one-dimensional character i.e, too happy in the first-half & too depressed in the 2nd-half.
What I hate more is that Imtiaz uses his female characters to prop up his male characters. His stories are majorly hero-driven, even if the hero has lesser screen-time than the heroine.
Anurag Kashyap doesn't know sh** about female psyche.😆 He always presents women from male POV i.e, how men think or perceive women. He gives them gaalis or 2-3 strong dialogues to tick the feminist check-box. That's it.
I haven't seen much of Sujoy Ghosh's work apart from Kahani (2012), which was a thriller/mystery and didn't really need to go into any psyche (male or female), so not sure how he writes women in general.
Shoojir Sircar is the best, since he presented Yami in Vicky Donor & Deepika as Piku very well. They were 100% like real women. His other directorial ventures were male-centric but they also had authentic female characters.
Similarly, Pradeep Sarkar always presents female characters much closer to real women and gives different layers to them.
Vikas Bahl's Queen goes deep into complex female psyche.
but the film was more about personal liberation which is a gender-neutral concept. That's why the audience, regardless of their gender, was able to relate with Rani's character.
