When it comes to animation, neither Bollywood nor audience takes this genre seriously and consider it only for kids. Bollywood makes only stupid kiddy movies mostly on Hindu mythological characters when it comes to animation genre.
Animated movies also require a huge budget which makes it tough for it to recover costs as animated films have no stars, and Bollywood being a star driven industry, it hardly finds takers.
But in 2005, there was one animated movie Hanuman which was surprisingly successful at box office. It was a Semi-Hit.

I know, not a clean Hit but still a big achievement considering no other Bollywood movie made under animation genre has ever made profit. Not just that, it's also the highest grossing animated film in Bollywood with total lifetime collections of 5 Crores, and this movie was released way back in 2005.
No other animated movie released after this was able to surpass it's collections despite hike in ticket prices and increase in number of screens.
Bollywood did try it's hand in making big budget animated films with huge promotions. Anyone remembers Roadside Romeo, Jumbo, Toonpur Ka Superhero? All these movies were backed by big stars and big production houses but all flopped badly at box office.
So what made Hanuman special? Why this movie was a success? Bollywood did make mythological movies on Hanuman and Ramayan before and after this but none got success like this one.
