How are you liking The Shining? 😳 Oh, A Monster Calls is a short but a powerful read, do tell me how you like it!

Ok, so question for the day -

Do you girls read books in any languages other than English?

Nope. Apart from English, I can read Hindi and Malayalam... I have never tried reading in one of those languages! I do want to get into Hindi and Malayalam literature but I am so intimidated! 😳

The Shining has completely captured my attention. I’ve finished 25% of the book and I’ve put aside the other books I was reading. I expected the start to be a little slow because that’s how Pet Semetary and Carrie were but I was taken by surprise.

A Monster Calls is most likely my next read; will definitely let you know my opinion once I’m done with it.

You can read Malayalam, that’s so cool! I wanted to learn Malayalam at one point since a couple of my friends were Mallus. I ended up learning the bad words instead 😆

I agree, reading in languages apart from English can be intimidating. Besides English I only know how to read Hindi unfortunately.

Besides English, I can read Hindi and Bengali. Hindi, I can read fluently but I am slow with Bengali. I read mostly English, but I have read a couple of Premchand's works in Hindi and a few Bengali short stories by Satyajit Ray from his Feluda series. I absolutely loved them all. I plan to read more stories in both these languages, but mostly I'll still be reading English, at least in the near future.

I agree. It was intimidating for me too before I read a Hindi novel. Worse was that when I finally picked up a book, I found it utterly boring. I think I wasn't old enough to appreciate it. But then I picked up another book by the same author a last year and I loved it. Maybe you can start with a short story and then move on to longer works?

@Anam: Oh, that's wonderful. The Shining does have slow parts in terms of the plot but that's not the attraction of this book. It's the characters that makes this book! I am so happy that you are enjoying it. 😃

Oh. 😆 Well, before starting the basics of any language, just quickly learn the bad words first! It's always useful. 🤣

@Diya: I think I will do that. Short stories might ease me into it! 😃

That’s so cool. I feel that one should actually make an effort to read in more than 1 language. Reading in a regional language gives you a better feel of the setting and characters as compared to reading the same stories in English.

@Shreya: I always kept putting off reading The Shining for later because of its genre and also because of the size of the book. I’m glad I picked it as a book club read so that way I have to read it. I remember you mentioning somewhere that you liked the book a lot so that’s what eventually made me make up my mind. I was planning to choose one of Stephen King’s shorter and more recent works as the pick for October.

Question for the day -

Which have been your 3-4 favourite books of the year so far? Books that you would really recommend to other readers.
