Legendary singer Balasubrahmanyam dies at 74. The music world lost one of its melodious voice, the song is ended but the melody lingers on.

Renowned Indian singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, a Guinness world record holder for his more than 40,000 songs over 50 years, has died aged 74.

Balasubrahmanyam is a phenomenon. He has a fine voice which always sings true. He has a deep awareness and a basic feel for the aesthetics of film music. Adding to all this, there is a raging enthusiasm, a respect for the art, which is his profession, and an open mind, that made him a legendary singer.

From romantic hits to popular dance tracks, he sang some of Indian cinema's best-known numbers, spanning 16 languages.

Balasubrahmanyam died on Friday after spending days in intensive care following a Covid-19 diagnosis.

SPB, as he was popularly known, began his career in Tamil and Telugu cinema in southern India - and became the first crossover singer who gained success in Bollywood.

His breakthrough Bollywood film came in 1981 when he sang for Ek Duuje Ke Liye, a romantic tragedy that was one of that year's biggest hits.

A legend, Balasubrahmanyam gave his voice to thousands of songs spanning across languages and genres. Winner of six National awards, he sang from actors ranging from MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Salman Khan.

He was hailed as a singing sensation despite his marked southern accent and became the 'singing voice' for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.

Balasubrahmanyam received two of India's top civilian honors, Padma Shri in 2001, and Padma Bhushan in 2011.
