Well if we are comparing to this, I would say then Sonu did not deserve for this song as the original track is sung by Hariharan from Alaipayuthe, movie by Mani Ratnam which was later on made in Hindi with almost the same songs.

Now coming to Sonu vs Udit that year, I would disagree on both coz there were many regional songs that deserved it more.

However if you compare Udit and Sonu that year, then Mere Rang de Basanti deserved more than Udit's song

Sonu's rendition of saathiya is on some other level he owned saathiya and completely over shadowed hariharan rendition of South.. . Sonu got more depth, passion and romance to the song..... And Not every one is well versed with South songs till it get a version in hindi/urdu.. ..its recreation of rehman by himself ... ... Saathiya hold the separate entity for bollywood.... If South work is recreated by rehman and which become big than what it was in South the it says it all... And deserve all the recognition as rehman got worldwide popularity from bollywood versions.. Most of rehman bollywood songs are his recreation from his South work...

Again disagree, ARR was popular more for his south songs be it Roja or muqabla or alaipayuthe , also I disagree with respect to Sonu sang better than Hariharan.

Hariharan for the song the much needed depth and his voice is magical. The picturisation too was copied from the original and did not do justice to the original either.

I guess our choice differs. For me ARR gained popularity bcoz of his songs down south, he just got additional popularity when he did Hindi.

I must differ from your point of you hariharan Is amazing singer but he don't have the melodious touch to his voice.. Plus sonu is expert in emoting expressions no one can do it better than him.. These all thing give him edge over hariharan version ... Infact Sp balasubramium said there are 2 amazing singers hariharan and shankar madevan but there is one singer better than both of them it is Sonu Nigam..... And yeah AR was big in South but South music itself isn't accepted worldwide... Bollywood had a reach to the world market Rehman became even bigger with bollywood and he got the Oscar for bollywood and not South ;) u must agree that. Bollywood is the biggest market in India... And he have used most of his South tunes in bollywood...
