It was much greater than that.

The royal sage Dhritarashtra, however, restraining the grief that arises from folly, enquired of Yudhishthira the just, saying, ‘If, O son of Pandu, thou knowest it, tell me the number of those that have fallen in this battle, as also of those that have escaped with life!’

"Yudhishthira answered, ‘One billion 660 million and 20,000 men have fallen in this battle. Of the heroes that have escaped, the number is 240,165.

I think this number this wrong and highly exaggerated or is somehow wrongly translated just like 33 koti became 33 crores.

When it has been stated multiple times that the total army was 18 akshauni. They have(Adi Parva) given the breakup of 18 akshauni and that corresponds to nearly 4 million people.

How can the number of people killed due to the war be 40 times the number of people who participated in war?

Aside even today the total population of India is nearly 1 billion 400 million, can we actually imagine that only the young male population 3000 years back was so more than this?

This number can no where be even near true if Mahabharata is Itihas

What research? I guess he said it from the shows inputs itself

As per the historians the population of India around 1000 BC was around 6 million, although this number need not be completely accurate but it can't be more than double of it.

Considering that only males participated in the war, there were many who didn't and not everyone died, the death of 7 million people seems improbable to me

Pradyumna was there in Kurukshetra if I recall correctly, he was involved in strategy meetings etc.

He couldn't however be a soldier in the war because Krishna had clearly stated that his clan would have fighting soldiers from Kaurav side

Satyaki wasn't from Krishna's clan, he wasn't bound to follow the rules of Krishna's clan, Pradyumna however was bound to it

Rationality surely says it's exaggeration. 18 akshauhinis = 218,700×18=3,936,600 including animals.

We know the key survivors but it's difficult to figure out how many soldiers and animals survived since not much is available in that domain.

Using the 40x exaggeration, no. of survivors boils down to 6000. Interesting topic for discussion.
