Btw, excuse my rant about Kans' motives and personality...it's just that Lola and I have done a lot of research about the Yadavas and just exactly how Kans was able to overthrown them all (as there were so many strong warriors among them). It get so passionate about it lol.

Okay

One more thing that struck me as uncharacterestic - Krishna supporting the objection of those who didn't want a wrestling match w/ Kansa's 4 wrestlers. That actually betrayed the kshatriya code of conduct: kshatriyas were required to accept challenges thrown at them. And the same Krishna who'd be shown later urging his court to defend Mathura even in face of certain defeat/death was shown here objecting to Kansa's request?

In the original, it was just Balarama vs Mushtika, and Krishna vs Chanoor: there wasn't any cheating involved in that. Kansa was confident that those 2 would get killed, but when they won, he panicked, and that's when Krishna went on to slay Kansa

This scene could just indicate Krishna's merciful nature. After all, he was notorious for giving people multiple chances before finally punishing them, whether they were Kamsa, Jarasandha, Kalyavan, Duryodhan, etc. He didn't automatically go in and fight/kill people. He preferred to use logic and practicality to avert a possible war/battle until it was absolutely necessary.

I took this scene as the same. He ultimately did accept the challenge, but he also gave the wrestlers a chance to be spared if they so chose.

But it didn't look that way, given that he was outnumbered, and not just that, the 2 extra fighters immediately took over the moment their comrades were slain.

I don't see how their greatness was diminished by actually killing 2, rather than 4 fighters

That's what I thought as well. Although in the serial, they showed Ugrasen turn on Kansa after the latter murdered Kirtiman - the first baby - and Kansa responded w/ a coup that toppled him. Something about that sequence didn't look right.

I actually much prefer the sequence of events as it was shown here and kind of hate versions that have Ugrasen dethroned and imprisoned before VasuDevaki's wedding. For the latter to treat Kans with any sort of respect or affection after he did that to her uncle/his father doesn't make sense.

Also, I wouldn't say Ugrasen *turned* on Kans in that one instance. The characterization in this pre-Krishna period of the show was very detailed and well thought out, with Ugrasen and Kans having a difference of opinion on democracy vs. dictatorship right from the scene in which all the Mathura characters are introduced in Ugrasen's court. The frustration between father and son boils over when Kans puts VasuDevaki under house arrest after the akashwani, but Ugrasen is content because he has control over the army and Kans alone won't be able to succeed in his cruel intentions. This is what prompts Kans to court Jarasandh's alliance, empowering him to both kill Kirtimaan and stage his coup. These early episodes are my favorite part of the show from a screenwriting standpoint--the portrayal of events and characters as well the overall worldbuilding of pre-Krishna Mathura are very logical, gripping, and well articulated so you understand everyone's motivations and the stakes of Krishna avataar feel as high as they need to.
