He did by Krishna's order

Krishna ordered because Yudhishtira refused to tell a lie.

Like Krishna later says, it's not enough to know the truth, it's important to differentiate between truth and lie.

Yudhishtira had no clue about greater truth. He was too consumed by his grandiose notions about himself to sacrifice himself to save his kingdom. Yes, sacrifice sometimes involved sacrifice of honor and self esteem, not just life and limb. Yudhishtira was too egotistical to do it. Hence Krishna's suggestion.

They probably just named it that and killed it.

Actually, that makes me think... why didn't they just name a flower that and smush it? Or a fly? Or something not sentient?

When did he sacrifice himself to save Kingdom?

He was kind of a victim card player who wanted others to tell him do something wrong/ do supposedly wrong things for him so that he might show himself to be great

I too think the same the name of the elephant was changed at the last moment

About flower/fly I don't think they would get those in a battlefield.

But to think of it, couldn't they have named a Chariot Ashwathama and dismantled it(that would be equal to killing right?)
