Sonu's issue isn't nepotism. It's that singers aren't given any copyrights to their songs. That means that even for a blockbuster song, they end up earning very low amounts. It's okay for someone like Sonu who can earn from concerts and other means but it kills younger newer singers whose names people don't even know. Nobody will buy concert tickets for them and they won't earn from the song itself either. That makes it really difficult for them to survive in the business.
AR Rahman fights for the same issue. That's why he gets very little work in BW because producers want to keep the rights, not give the album rights to the music director.
