I think Abhay Deol is a better actor than Hrithik Roshan. But I was watching this song, and it was difficult to look away from Hrithik. Not because of his looks, but because of that elusive, hard to pinpoint, quality "star quality". Maybe another word for screen presence? Do you people think this star quality can make or break your career in Bollywood?

Yes, screen presence matters a lot.

The larger than life personality transforming into the screen makes the audience enthralled and it makes the experience of watching movies onscreen a grand experience.

YES. In fact, that is what truly defines being a star for me.

Maybe not so much for actors today, because of the accessibility and somewhat lack of talent, though it still makes a difference. Everybody is called a star these days.😆

But if you look at yesteryear actors, both from Bollywood and Hollywood, they had major screen presence and that kind of aura that charmed people off their socks. Not to mention, they were all so gorgeous/charming and inaccessible.

eg. Leela Naidu, Waheeda Rehman, Asha Parkeh, Madhubala, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Guru Dutt, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor.. so many more.

Absolutely, the likes of Salman and SRK would not have a career if star quality didn’t matter. You either need to be an exceptionally gifted actor, have the right connections, or have exceptional charisma/star presence. Otherwise you are OUT

Salman I agree, but SRK combines good acting skills with screen presence. You cannot equate the two. SRK has his roots in theatre, and he comes across as a finely-honed actor. SRK in Chak De beats everyone. Some people feel he hams, but I disagree.

Same, its not that I am saying it because I am his fan but he is one good actor. The thing is his stardom has overshadowed his acting skills. But, SRK has always been a good actor. Obviously, no one can beat him when it comes to romance, but even other genres, he has been good too. Be it playing anti hero in Baazigar, or negative character of Anjam or Darr, a common man in Swades, or in a biopic as a Hockey coach in Chak De India, or Alcoholic Devdas, or playing characters with comical shades in K3G, Main Hoon Na, or playing a Don, there are many more. Though, I am disappointed recently with his choices but Shahrukh has lived most of his characters and has given us many iconic roles to cherish. ❤️

That's true for both him and Aamir. But they both are great actors❤️ Love watching them onscreen, though SRK needs to improve his script sense if he wants to stay relevant!

People do say that Marilyn Monroe looked pretty ordinary in real life, but once the camera was on, she was magic!

There have been many of her contemporaries, who have been far better actresses & far better looking as well. But the *star* has always been Marilyn.

So yes, maybe there is a kind of an aura that makes an actor a star. Rest all are only actors; some good, some poor.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. That’s gonna stay. But a star’s success long term is a combination of lots of things with some serious luck!
