Chapter 15 - Shift
Arnav glanced at her again through his sunglasses, like he had been since they had met in the morning. He was sure she would notice eventually, but he couldn't help it. She was clearly sleep-deprived, pale, and... almost slumped. As she drove through the traffic, he felt his fists clench. He wanted to scream, do something, say something to shake her out of the air of gloom that shrouded her. He didn't like this version of Khushi. Hell, he felt like he did not know this version of Khushi.
It's not like you know much about her either way, the voice inside his head chimed. He conceded to that and maintained silence. Her long hair slowly came undone and shrouded her profile from his sideways glance as she drove on, almost on autopilot. Dusty and crowded Mumbai streets whipped past him as the silence between them crept towards discomfort steadily. He gave in when he could not take it anymore and knew it was a mistake the moment he crossed the line.
But when she talked like some idiotic damsel from a B-rated TV serial, he completely lost it. As much as he wanted to find the man who did this to her and rip him apart, he was also angry at her for letting it get inside her head and make her question herself. He had never been great at expressing empathy, sympathy, solidarity, or any of the emotions from that league. Hence, the words that spilled out of him sounded harsher than comforting. A part of him also knew that she did not misunderstand. The same part told him that something between them had shifted when she looked at him with her eyes widened with surprise, which then morphed into relief and a shadow of a smile. It was barely noticeable, but it was there. He cursed himself as he looked out of the window, wanting to physically stamp out the happy-dance his heart broke into. The heaviness in the silence dissipated, leaving behind it an air of a new beginning. The dusty afternoon heat was a lot less irritating, the honking a tiny bit more bearable. His gut clenched and he realized he felt what was called "butterflies in the stomach."
"I have an extra ticket to tonight's open mic in Santa Cruz. You want to come with me?" he asked as he unbuckled his seat belt. They had almost reached his office.
For the second time, he saw the same surprise reflected in her eyes.
"Let me confirm in a couple of hours? I will need to assess the workload." She replied. He nodded with a smile and got off. She waved from the car window as she drove away.
As he watched her car drive away from where she had dropped him, he could not believe he was looking forward to the evening with Ms. Khushi Kumari Gupta. His world had indeed, shifted.
