PART 161
“Time flies really, doesn’t it?”
Urmila helped Siya with her baggage at the airport as the two sisters headed off towards the exit.
Siya recalled the events in Agartala as a smile appeared on her face, one of pride and a simultaneous peace. The opening ceremony had been massively successful, and the university had reported a total of well over a couple of thousand students in admissions, all equipped and ready to pass out as the best minds in the country.
Three days had gone by In a fluke, and though the two missed their parents terribly, they could not wait to be back to where everyone was.
“Di?”
Siya came out of her trance as she noticed their driver waiting for them at the arrivals.
“It sure does, Mila. And I guess thats the beauty of it.”
—
“Hey! I think they’ve arrived !”
Maanvi pointed to the doors as they rushed towards it, the sounds of a car engine quietingg down in front of the house.
Siya and Urmila stepped down, their sisters rushing into their embrace.
“We missed you so much!” Shruti said, hugging, rather strangling Urmila.
“And Congratulations woman! We need a party now!”
“Oh my god stop choking me…” Urmila could barely manage before Shruti laughed and let go.
“Sure, sure, we’ll have a party. But can I enter first my dear sister?”
Shruti held her and Siya by their hands as she led them inside.
Kraanti and Sumitra eagerly walked ahead as they blessed the two whole heartedly.
“Hope everything was fine on the way..” Sumitra asked.
“Yes Maa, thankfully. I hope youre feeling fine today, Ram told me yesterday you were looking tired yesterday.”
“Yes dear, I am. Actually,” she said, turning to Urmila and cupping her cheek. “Without even one of you, this house feels empty. Each of you are equally important for every bit of love in this house. Without you, something feels ..missing.”
Urmila hugged Sumitra warmly, finding the mother shed left behind within her.
“But dont worry, I will not stop you from going to work there. After all, our bubbly one is now a boss!”
“Maa, nothing like that..” She replied laughing.
“Hey.”
Rams shoulder nudged Siya’s as he came to stand next to her. Taking her carry on from her, he whispered,
“Why didnt you let me come and get you from the airport? Dinner could wait.”
“Nothing Ram.. Its not a long way. I hope you all have had dinner?”
Ram shook his head.
“Why?! Thats why Id asked you not to come in the first place..”
“Siya,” he sighed. “You think anyone would have dinner knowing that you guys would be coming soon?”
She simply shrugged, both overwhelmed at their love and their childishness.
“Ok then, come on, join in.” Ram said, leading everyone to the table.
——-
“God, I am sooo tired.”
Urmila plopped herself on the bed as Lakshman followed behind her, closing the door softly and dimming the lights to her comfort.
“So, how will you arrange the party ma’am? Everyone seems very excited. ”
Urmila smirked as she sat up, Lakshman sitting next to her.
“I thought you were doing that.”
“Oh no, not at all,” he shrugged. “I said Id arrange a surprise for you, but the party is upto you.”
“Hmmm.. I see.” She let out a laugh. “So, where is my surprise?”
Lakshman paused for a second, pushing a stray strand behind her ear.
“Are you not tired?”
“I am, but.. I think I have enough energy for a surprise.”
“Ofcourse,” Lakshman added sarcastically. He got up and held her hand, leading her out to their balcony.
—
The cold of wind would have otherwise made Urmila flinch, but the warmth that surrounded her from all sides made her forget, in the moment, about everything else. Under the light of gleaming stars, and the hue of small burning candles and peaceful music playing on her small radio, she couldnt help but keep running between questioning her dreams and living life at THAT moment, with all her heart.
“Come, sit.”
Lakshman made her sit on their little swing, seating himself on a little stool next to it.
“Liking it?”
Urmila sighed as she closed her eyes, his hand in hers.
“Perfect,” she whispered. “You know me too well, dont you?”
“Well.. Im glad. I knew you’d like something simple so… and also, do you have room for dessert?”
She looked ahead in shock.
“What?! Youve arranged dessert also?”
He got laughing as he walked out of the room, only to return moments later with a small cake in his hand.
“Blueberry!” She laughed.
“If theres anything you love more in this world than your sleep, it is blueberry, isn’t it?”
She nodded proudly as she took Lakshman’s hand and cut the cake. She picked up a piece, only to stop midair.
“What happened?”
“I dont know.. Can I trust you with food anymore? I hope theres no chilli in this…”
“OH GOD!” The two of them burst out at the same moment as Lakshman hit his head.
“I thought you’d forgotten that. And by the way, it was a prank.”
“I never forget such things. You hurt your leg the last time when I ran behind you, if you put chilli this time, I swear you’ll hurt your head.”
“Trust me Maam,” he folded his hands, “No chilli this time. Now eat it.”
She gladly bit in, and pure happiness and pleasure reflected on her face.
“IT IS SO GOOD,” she said, her mouth full.
“Where did you get it from? We Should order our cakes from there the next time..,” she said, gorging on the remnants like a child.
“Well.. lets just say that, I learnt today that I shouldnt ever again say baking is easy.”
“Wait..” She said, keeping the plate down. “YOU made it?”
Lakshman smiled, nodding and chuckling at her surprised face.
“You look like Pikachu, please dont be so surprised.”
“You.. did the whole thing yourself?”
He sighed, feeding her another piece.
“Without anyones help, that too. I nearly poured the whole bottle of vanilla essence in the cake, had it not been for Shruti who came in at that very moment and stopped me.”
“Oh my god.. thats… wow.” She paused for words.
“Thank you, you know. Thats all I can say.” Her voice mellowed down at the end, perhaps out of the increasing thudding of her heart that overshadowed all other sounds.
He moved ahead as he ran his fingers over hers.
“Thats the least I could do… Im glad you liked it. And yes, Thank you, to you too for…you.”

PART 162
“Wow, this place looks really good.”
Mila talked with the manager as she led them into a secluded corner at the back of the high end all-nighter.
“Yeah, I mean, Id heard a lot about this place from some friends, so I thought we should check it out.”
“And what better an occasion,” Ram said as he settled himself down with others around a large, circular table.
They looked around as the loud music struck the walls at the other side, the pub and their rowdy customers already beginning to create a mess.
“People will never learn to behave, will they,” Shruti said, casting a sharp glance at them.
“Im glad in a way Badi Maa and Choti Maa didnt come today, theyd be shocked to see this kind of a crowd.”
They sat quietly for a while as Urmila asked for the serving to begin. In a moment, platters of food were brought in front of them as they relished and gorged on all the beautiful delicacies.
——
“Wow, that was really good,” Shatrughan said, licking the remnants of spice from his fingers, much to Shrutis dismay.
“Thank you for this Mila,” Ram said. He moved ahead to take the bill slip, when Urmila stopped him.
“Bhaiyya, its my treat today, please.”
“I know dear but…”
“No Bhaiyya,” she smiled. “Please, for today. You can bring us here some other day.”
Ram nodded as Urmila handed over her card.
“Its a once in a blue moon thing Bhaiyya, that Lady Urmila will pay on her own, so dont leave the chance.”
She turned sharply at Lakshman, who returned her with a curt smirk.
“Stop puling her leg all the time,” Ram chuckled.
“Second nature Bhaiyya, sorry,” He replied laughing.
“Okay then, lets head home. Early start tomorrow for all of us.”
All of them got up to head out when,
“Just a minute,” Shruti said, ” I need to use the washroom real quick. You guys go, Ill come.”
“Ill wait outside with her, you all go,” Siya added as the rest walked out.
———
Splashing cold water all over her face, Shruti closed her eyes as she calmed herself from all the disturbance around. The loud noise had been getting to her for a while, and she’d not said anything at the table, lest she should worry the others without reason.
Rubbing a paper towel over her face, she opened her eyes to the mirror, only to be met with a bloodshot gaze, looking straight into hers beyond the translucent wall separating the mens section of the washroom from hers.
Shruti seemed to lose her breath for a second, the sudden fear grappling her thinking. She quickly dropped the towel and rushed out of the washroom.
“Oh god, where’s Di? I knew.. there was something off about this place.”
She turned to pull the handle to the exit door, when suddenly, a coarse voice came from behind.
“Hey..youre one of them right?”
Without even turning, Shruti could gauge that whoever called her was drunk. It was the deep voice of a man, right on her shoulder, in the dark corner of the restaurant.
“L..Leave me alone,” her heart thudded against her chest.
“She’s the younger one, I think.” Another mans voice added to her worries.
Shruti slowly turned to be met with the faces of two drunk and burly men, their gaze on her making her feel vulnerable for the first time in her life.
“Ya..youre the younger one..” The first man said , his words slopping.
“I saw your sisters.. damn nice..”
“SHUT UP!” Hearing them speak of her sisters in a lewd way made her blood boil.
“OH you shut up!” The second stepped ahead stumbling in his steps. “Your sisters did all that for money!”
“Security!” She called out, taking a few steps behind.
“You rich pieces of sh**, can do everything for money.. Just because I work under your husband, does that mean I can’t come here?! I bloody paid for it..”
“Your sisters could do it for money, Im sure you can do it too… Come on….”
The two men began to step ahead towards her, as she kept moving away, the door lock refusing to open despite all her attempts.
“Its locked.. its gone…Youre gone…”
Shruti closed her eyes, unable to bear the disgusting smell of his breath when suddenly,
“ARH!!”
She opened her eyes to the men in front of her, on the floor. Her eyes ran upto Siya, A vase in her hand and blood in her eyes.
“Di!” She yelled out, running to her and taking the vase out of her hands.
Rubbing her hands over Siyas back, she calmed her down as Siya embraced her tightly.
“Im so sorry, so sorry dear. I walked back to the table because Id left my phone behind and couldnt find it…. Oh god, Im so sorry. These sick b**tards, Ill see to them.”
“No Di, wait, calm down. Its okay, Im okay.”
It was in a spree as all of the others came rushing back inside, along with the restaurant manager who came to check on the sudden disturbance.
Their eyes fell on the two men on the ground, and at the shaking figures of the two.
“What.. what happened?” Ram ran up to them. “Are you both okay? Did someone hurt you?”
Shruti narrated all the incidents quickly as Urmila made Siya sit down. With each passing word of hers, she could see their blood rush.
“You bloody..!” Lakshman kicked the foot of the first man, making him turn up to face all of them.
It all seemed weird as Shatrughan took a step back, almost as if in a sudden acknowledgement.
“Its..Naveen! He works in our office… He.. Oh my god.”
Shatrughan bent down as he pulled him up by the collar, Naveen subconsciously recognising who he was and fear coming over him.
“Im leaving you now just because I have a reputation in public, but if you dont show me your filthy face in office tomorrow, I swear to god Ill enter your house and kill you.”
“I say lets finish him now..” Bharat stepped ahead angrily to their surprise, raising his fist as Ram brought him back.
“No, we wont do anything here. They deserve much worse. Shatrughans right, we’ll see to them tomorrow in the presence of police. He can’t escape.”
“And you!” Bharat turned to the manager. “Is this the kind of people you allow here?!”
The manager looked down and fumbled as Ram took all of them away.
—————————
“Are you okay?”
Siya turned to Ram and nodded softly, trying to forget the incident of the evening. She switched off the lights and snuck into bed, Ram holding her close like his only anchor.
“Im so sorry Siya, we sensed something was wrong and so we walked back in.. if only Id come in earlier.”
“Its okay Ram… Ive told Shruti to try to forget about it too. Tomorrow, please make sure that guy ends up in jail.”
Ram nodded as he held onto her, slowly making her drift into sleep. Yet, his eyes remained open, the words of the man ringing in his ears.
As they turned to leave the messy scene, the mans deep voice caught itself onto Rams ear.
“Ill get back to them, can’t keep everyone quiet about Vatika can they?”
No, no.
Ram thought to himself, the repercussions of Siya and Urmila being talked about again. He knew, she could not stand against it quietly forever. Was it time to make the proof, public? Did he really need to do so?
Did she really deserve it?
He didnt notice when the burden of his own thoughts made him swift into sleep, awakening in the hopes of a bright new day.
