Why is he interested in defeating Arjun in that case? Death of Arjun(in case he succeeded) would have reduced Pandavas power substantially and they might have lost depriving Yudhishtir of his kingdom. ..
So both of these actions are completely contary to each other (if we remove the Dharma Adharma thing from the equation since I am sure Karna never thought that being with Duryodhan he was favouring Adharma)
