Part 25

After Bobby’s case Mini had to face prying eyes of fellow students and even some faculty members in the college. She had to bear the judgments passed on her character by random people every now and then. Suddenly she became the center of attraction in the college for the wrong reason. She found it very difficult to cope up with it and even thought of leaving the college because it was nothing short of a mental trauma for her but with Neil’s support and her friends motivation she survived and learned to deal with it. As the days passed everyone started forgetting that incident and Mini’s life became normal again.

On weekend Mini went to meet Mrs. Shah in the orphanage. “Its so good to see you after this long.” Said Mrs. Shah as she hugged Mini. Mini was surprised by her gesture but she hugged her back as there was an affinity in her hug. “I was quite busy of late. Lots of things happened.” Mini replied. “Ya I got to know about that protest and unfortunate incident happened with you. I hope you and your husband are fine?” Mrs. Shah asked in concerned. “Oh yes….we are fine. But how do you know about it?” asked Mini out of curiosity as she thought the protest incident was in news but college trip incident...how she knows about it. "Actually I got to know it from some college trustee when I met him in an event." Mrs. Shah covered it up. “So, hows life going?” Mrs. Shah asked. “Its good. The renovation of our house is almost complete. I want to throw a house warming party and I want to you to come.” Mini invited her. “I would have love to come but…” Mrs. Shah tried to make an excuse. “I don’t want to hear anything. Its on weekend. If you really like me then you have to come.” Mini again requested. “But….” Mrs. Shah tried to say something but Mini didn’t let her complete. “Come on, you can do this much for me. My husband also wants to meet you. Actually he asked me why I keep coming here so I told him about you and he was really surprised when I kept praising you. He only asked me to invite you to the party.” Mini tried to persuade her. “Really? He wants to meet me?” asked Mrs. Shah in surprised but then came to the conclusion that may be Neil didn’t recognize her by her name.If he knew then surely he would have never invited her and even stopped Mini from meeting her.

“Yes, he is looking forward to meet you because he says I behave like a fan girl whenever I talk about you.” Mini laughed at herself. Mrs. Shah was silent for sometime. She was dying to see her son as she had not seen him properly except in some business events ever since she left Oberoi mansion. In those events also he always maintains distance from her. How she wished to attend his wedding but he didn’t invite her. Thanks to Naeem bi who keeps giving her all the important news about his son due which she feels that she is some how connected to him and now through Mini she gets to hear about him. The temptation to go there and see his son face to face was too difficult to avoid but she knew what will happen once she go there. She didn’t want to break Mini’s heart so she just nodded in yes and thought that later she would make some excuse.

Later, Mini went to her gynaec. The visit was long due but because of all the events happened in her life she kinda forgot about it. Mini entered in doctor’s cabin. “Ah, Mrs. Oberoi. Please have a seat.” Doctor said politely. Mini smiled at her. She was nervous. She didn’t know why but she was always nervous in the hospitals. “So Mrs. Oberoi are you planning to have baby?” asked doctor as she checked Mini’s case history. Mini immediately looked up to her with confused expression, “No…no doctor. Why you are asking this?” “Mrs. Oberoi I had put you on shots for birth control. It had to be administered at regular intervals. The next one is overdue now for more than 15 days. My office also sent you reminders but you didn’t show up that’s why I thought….” Doctor replied. “Actually since last few days I was very busy…really caught up in so many things so it slipped out of my mind. But I am not planning for baby for sure.” Mini replied. “But Mrs. Oberoi if you are not planning for baby then you cant be careless about the due date of shots.” Doctor advised. “But you said na that the effect period is not strictly of fixed interval, it generally has the margin of few more days. ”Mini put forward her doubt. “A few days Mrs. Oberoi…means 2-3 days max to max a week and you are coming here after 15 days. If we minus the margin period also then you are one whole week late.” Explained doctor. “That means…I ….I could be pregnant?” Mini stammered as she became more nervous thinking about the possibility. “well…Only if you had unprotected physical relations during last week.” Doctor replied as she noticed Mini suddenly became unnerved. Mini gulped down as she mentally started counting how many times they did it during last week. And it was always unprotected between them. She didn't like the barrier of protection between them thats why she has consulted her gynaec and opted for shots for birth control very early after her marriage. Doctor saw her all tensed and understood her situation. “So, you have….” Doctor left the sentence in middle as Mini nodded in yes.

“Cant you do anything? Give me some medication or anything….or you can just give me the due shots. Its for avoiding the pregnancy right?” Mini said nervously. “Mrs. Oberoi, its not that simple. If you have conceived already then medication or shot is of no use now.” Explained doctor. “Then check me for the pregnancy.” Said Mini. “Its too early. We wont get the clear result. You have to wait atleast one more week for that.” Doctor replied. “You mean to say that nothing can be done now. I just have to wait for one whole week then only I’ll get to know if I am pregnant or not.” Mini repeated doctor’s words as the seriousness of the situation sunk in. “Exactly.” Said doctor. “And after that?” asked Mini. “Well, if the test result are negative we can again put you on shots but if you turned out to be pregnant than you have to decide….if you don’t want to keep the baby then abortion is the only option.” Doctor replied in detail. Mini’s heart become heavy after listening all this. She mentally cursed herself for being so careless. “I am too young to have baby. On the top of that, college and career, everything will suffer. Oh God! What I have done?” Mini thought. Seeing her all tensed doctor offered her a glass of water, “Mrs. Oberoi, relax. We don’t know anything as of now. Lets wait for this week then only we will get to know your actual condition. May be the results will be negative.” Doctor pacified her. Mini just nodded in yes and stood up to leave. "And...I would advise you to not indulge in unprotected physical relations during this week atleast." doctor said. Mini nodded and took her leave. She thought a lot on this matter and whether she should tell anything about this to Neil but as nothing was clear she decided not to tell him anything right now.

Mini came back home. She entered in her room when Neil hugged her from behind. “You are home early today?” asked Mini as she smiled at him. “Yes, I had to come early as I had to do some preparations.” Replied Neil. “What preparation?” inquired Mini. “Preparations for your surprise.” Neil said and took out a blindfold from his pocket and tied it on Mini’s eyes. Mini gasped, “Neil, I cant see anything. What are you doing? And what surprise?” asked Mini confused. “You will see just in few minutes.” Said Neil and picked her in his arms. “Where are you taking me?” Mini giggled. “You will know.” Neil smiled at her as he took her to the terrace garden. He put her down there and opened the blind fold. Mini slowly opened her eyes. She never expected what she saw in front of her eyes. Already beautiful terrace garden was decorated with beautiful flowers ,candles and heart shaped balloons of red and white colour. In the centre there was a gazebo made up of red and white curtains and there was a dinner table set for two in it with candle placed in the center. Mini was stunned by beautiful arrangement and by the fact that Neil has done it for her. “Mr. Oberoi, I thought you were not hearts and flowers kinda guy.” Mini addressed him formally remembering their first meeting where he had said that he doesnt like filmy romance. “Yes, I am not. But for you Mrs. Oberoi, I thought I can act like romantic fool once in a while.” Neil replied and laughed at himself. He himself couldn’t believe he has done something like this for Mini. This was so not him but he was seeing Mini was feeling low since few days. She had gone through a lot and he wanted to make her happy so he made this plan and did all the things he thought Mini would like even if it was out of his comfort zone.

“Shall we?” asked Neil as he extended his hand for her. Mini took his hand and went to the table where like some gentleman on first date he pulled chair for Mini and then took his chair. Mini couldn’t stop herself from getting impressed. Neil opened the bottle of champagne and pour it two glasses. He offered one glass to Mini and they both cheered it. Neil gulped it down while Mini kept it aside. “Come on, don’t be a spoilsport. Its just a champagne.” Neil said as he gestured Mini to taste champagne. Mini took few sips. “Here I am trying to make you quit drinking but looks like you will make me just like you. First wine and now champagne what more you will make me drink?” asked Mini. “Drink all my happiness and in return I will consume all your sorrows.” Said Neil looking in Mini’s eyes. Mini was lost in his romantic line that she couldn’t respond for few seconds. Neil maintained that intense gaze for some more time but then started laughing uncontrollably as he couldn’t hold it anymore. “ ‘How to impress a girl on first date’ chapter 1 page 2” said Neil still laughing. “Neil, you actually read a book for this?” asked Mini as she started laughing with him too. “What would I have done then? I never did any of this surprise date or candle light dinner kind of thing before. I had no idea about it.” replied Neil.

Neil put on the music and asked Mini’s hand for dance. Mini remembered their first dance on their engagement day as she put her hand in his. The song started playing-

Neil put his hand on her waist and pulled her gently towards him. He looked into her eyes and saw same emotions which he was feeling now. He couldn’t believe she graced his lonely dark life with her presence and made it bright with hope. He moved his foot to the left first and then right and Mini followed her lead.Neil remembered how Mini felt after college trip incident. How scared she was and how he wished he could take away all her pain and fears. He wanted to hide her in his embrace from the whole world. The way she had asked him to make love so that she could feel pure again broke his heart into thousand pieces and he wanted her to know that to him no one is as pure as her. Neil turned Mini and hugged Mini from behind as both swayed with beats of music. He felt as if song was conveying his feelings.

Mini turned towards him and Neil swirled her into circle and made her face him again. This time they held each other more closely and were lost in each others eyes. Mini remembered how broken he was when they had fight over her name change. That day Mini saw a totally different side of Neil who was otherwise so arrogant always.The way he had loved her that night was still fresh in her mind. How he came to Patiala knowing of her sickness and the way he tried to mix in the family just for her sake. The moment she realized that she loves him and can go to any extent to make him happy. Mini came out of her thoughts when Neil kissed her on forehead. Mini hugged him as they continued to move slowly with the music. The song was playing on the music system but Mini's heart was also singing for Neil.

Both of them parted away as the song ended. But they kept looking at each other. Mini wanted to say many things but felt she has lost her tongue as she was overwhelmed by all this. She saw Neil’s eyes which were full of love for her as if he will confess his love any moment now but as usual instead of words he chose the physical act and kissed her pouring all his feelings into it. Mini closed her eyes feeling content. “As much as I would love to kiss you all night but I am hungry also. So lets have dinner.” Neil said as he broke the kiss. Mini smiled and went to the table with him. They enjoyed their dinner peacefully. At the end as Mini stood up from her chair Neil held his hand. “What?” asked Mini. “One more surprise left.” Replied Neil as he winked at her. “There is one more surprise. You are my rude mercurial weirdo husband Neil right and not some doppelganger?” Mini asked as she laughed at him. “I am not me anymore.You have taken over my senses and also my identity. I have merged into you and flowing in your nerves with your blood stream.” Said Neil looking intensely in her eyes. Mini was speechless for sometime as if she was captivated by his charm. “ ‘How to impress a girl on first date’ chapter 3 page 2” Said Neil and again started laughing uncontrollably. Mini also started laughing with him.

Neil turned Mini around and closed her eyes with one hand while he took out a beautiful pendant set from his pants pocket. He tied it around Mini’s neck. Mini opened her yes as she felt something on her neck. She saw beautiful heart shaped Neelam pendant studded with diamonds from all sides in a white gold chain. She couldn’t took off her eyes from it. “Neil this is so beautiful. ”Mini praised it. “Not more than you” said Neil as he cupped her face. “And this is my original line.” He added quickly. Mini hugged him tightly. “Thank you so much. For this gift, for making this evening so beautiful and for coming into my life.” Mini said as her voice choked with emotions. Neil pulled her apart and saw tears in her eyes. “Kya ye khushi ke aansu hain? Kyunki dukh ke aansu toh main in aankhon mein kabhi aane nahi dunga.” Neil asked as he wiped her tears.

Mini smiled amidst tears and shook her head in no. “Ye pyar ke aansu hain. Wo pyar jisko confess kiye bina ab main nahi reh sakti. I love you Neil Oberoi. I love you so much.” Mini said and hugged him once again as fresh tears came to her eyes. She waited to hear his reply but it never came and his hold on her also become loose. Mini realized Neil become stiff. She pulled herself away from him and saw his face. Shock and worry was written all over it. Mini shook him, “I said I love you Neil. Don’t you have to say anything to me?” Mini asked desperately. “NO, I don’t have anything to say. I told you I don’t believe in love. Why…why you have to do this? everything was going great but you have to ruin it.” Neil said as he ran his hand in his hair in frustration and left from there while Mini kept looking at him shocked as in few seconds only the best evening of her life was now turned into a nightmare she always dreaded
