I tried learning it last year after years of watching Pakistani serials😃

Can speak well I think. Trying to get a grasp on its script.

We are required to learn a foreign language in high school and college so I took Spanish. They teach such basic level that even after so many years, I can't speak it fluently and let's not even talk about pronunciation. Also people here are too ignorant to learn a language besides English. Learning a language when you are older is very difficult. That's why I'm thankful that I grew up learning both Hindi and English as a kid. Many Indian-American kids don't speak Hindi or their Indian mother tongue because their parents don't teach it thinking that it will affect their english. Which is not true at all lol because I can speak both languages fluently. But, I can't read/write in Hindi.

@bold I agree on this one,

@italics and underlined many people even in India aren't teaching their kids their mother tongue. I understand that learning English is important but you can learn as many languages as you wish. I believe in carrying the heritage with modern rules after all there has to be a balance.

I myself can read and write in 3 languages English, Marathi, Hindi. I understand Sanskrit and even can read Sanskrit texts. It doesn't seem difficult.

Should we teach you reading and writing in Hindi?😛

It's scientifically proven that it's easier to learn languages as a kid. Tbh most intellectuals speak multiple languages so the argument that it would affect their English is not strong. In fact, the more languages you speak, the more marketable you are in a job field.

Lol I should've spent learning how to read/write hindi during quarantine and surprised my parent 😆 My cousin tried teaching me so I can read very basic words...KG level

So true Lavy👏 I'm of a similar opinion. Many parents here feel ashamed of their mother tongues. While it's okay to speak in English, the regional langs/mother tongues shouldn't have any lesser weightage.

@b an identical list here😃 (my love for Sanskrit is indefinite)

Although my first language is English, I was exposed to Hindi by my parents similar to you. I also took Spanish from 6th grade but I agree to have forgotten a vast majority of words. It has been in my mind to take some courses in Spanish and possibly Cantonese for some time but never got the actual time. I think cultural arts/music also play an aspect of learning the Indian culture like being exposed to Kathak (or other Indian dances), Bollywood/Bhangra, Latin Dances, and piano at an early age because I wanted to learn the best of both worlds.

I think a lot of people would think we are "white-washed" but we aren't. In fact, all of my American friends love Indian Culture! I've seen YT videos where people would ask Indian residents (I know its small representation because Indians love all their guests and served them with love) stereotyping a lot of stuff shown on TV like there is more than the stereotypical rep of an American; it's a melting pot! Just because we have American mannerisms/thinkings doesn't mean that we don't respect the Indian culture.
