The basic theme itself is about showing an ideal man and how he lived his life but I don't agree that there is no grey. Literally every character has made some choice that can be questioned. Ram agreeing to Sitajis agni pariksha on two occasion. Sending her to exile while she is pregnant on mere doubt casted by citizens put questions on his character. Similarly Kumbhakarna. Kaikei isn't evil, she was grey. Manthara was real evil.
