Peace, that's a really good point about the engagement sequence! There was a lot of ambiguity about Kunal's feelings. Kunal even tells Shweta something like, you can't separate Kuhu and me, which is strange because the whole point was for Shweta's appearance to cause drama and break the rishta. 😉 Even if Kunal didn't know Meenu had orchestrated this on purpose, he should have seen the opportunity when it presented itself.

The thing about that phase is that neither Kunal nor Meenu wanted it to get as far as the actual shaadi. They wanted the Maheshwaris to cut it off much before that, and cause such a huge rift between the two families that nobody would ever agree to let Mishti and Abir pursue their relationship. She expected Kuhu to react like Mishti did when she broke the GD, so they could play the victim but Kuhu didn't oblige, and Abir kept smoothing things over when she tried create deal breakers, so the natak just kept extending, the stakes got higher, and Kunal got more and more uncomfortable with it as time went on.

There's a great scene the morning after the bachelor party when Kunal laments to Meenu for almost having revealed the truth to Kuhu and Meenu says it's okay and it actually worked in our favour because now everyone believes that you love Kuhu very much. Kunal's reaction to this is definitely worth noting! It's similar to when he fights with her over the prenup and asks what was the point of ruining his, and more importantly Kuhu's life? She retorts with, I know you never cared about Kuhu and once again, you see this conflict on his face, where he knows it isn't the truth but he'll never say so out loud.

I think that Kunal may have said that to Shweta just to prove to her that he was in a stable and happy relationship, instead of being broken and alone after she cheated him.

Oof, there I go again with my pessimism.

Not at all, I completely agree with you. What makes that moment special for me is that Kunal was so touched and empowered by Kuhu's faith that it gave him the confidence to stand up to Shweta instead of letting her drag him down. This was the first time he didn't let Shweta get the last word or need Abir to shut her up, and it's because for a second, Kunal forgot that the whole rishta was fake and just let himself get wrapped up in the security of Kuhu's trust and support. He didn't need someone to fight his battles for him; he just needed someone to trust that he could fight them for himself.

but Shweta did not matter for Kunal anymore by that time, remember right after mishnal GD broke & kuku had started hanging out & Shweta comes & plans that party where Kuhu takes Kunal as a surprise, post that there is a scene of abinal confrontation, wherein abir is worried of Kunal because of Shweta's planning & plotting to trap Kunal again but Kunal clearly says 'karne dijiye usko jo karna hai, mujhe koi farak nahi padhta, mujhe bas aapse farak padhta hai', he was worried of mishbir friendship

so why does proving anything to Shweta matter to Kunal now?

thanks for pointing out, I re-watched both scenes & even the bachelor's/hen's party episodes🤓

Kunal's conflict is clear in both scenes you mentioned, but going by Kunal's character you have to be observant towards his expressions to see that, probably thats why many people misunderstand Kunal's character

also I realised that during that 'hamari kahani kuchh aur ho sakti thi' scene in mishku room, when kunal talks about his break-up with Shweta, I think he is about to confess his real feelings for Kuhu before Jasmeet enters because he says something like '2 valentines day maine room mein lock ho kar bitaye the, par ab.....'

infact during that kubir scene where kuhu says 'mujhe ghar jaana hai', after kunal gives her the divorce papers, Kunal is standing at the door when kubir are talking inside the room & his reactions are worth watching, he is so sad & broken when she is asking her mom to let her come at maheshwaris for some days💔

The bachelor's/hen's party scene is my second favourite Kuku scene of all time (after the visarjan hug). It has infinite rewatchability and every time I watch it I notice something different, based on what the current track of the show is. If there is one scene that sums up the complexity of Kuku's relationship, it's that one!

I also love the lead up to it where Kunal is trying to tell the drunk RVs that he is doing pyar ka natak but they aren't listening to him so he starts talking to Kuhu's cut-out and telling her he'll come and talk to her directly. The fact that that was then followed by him venting out so much of his trapped emotion, from cheating and lying not being him to his feelings about Shweta makes it all the more meaningful. That was the beauty of early Kuku -- they both felt like nobody was hearing them out and they each found a sympathetic, patient ear in the other.

Kuhu is more obvious but even with Kunal, he may have been rude to her on the surface, but even in their fake marriage he took her advice very seriously and thanked her when it worked out. That's actually a lot more respect then she ever got from anyone in her own family!

@bold 1: I totally think so too! The very fact that he went to her that night speaks volumes. Anyway, he was supposed to abandon her the next day, so if she didn't matter to him, what difference did it make at this point? I don't think he would have said I love you, but he would have told her how she has brought colour into his life and made him hope again.

There are so many great dialogues in that scene (as you can see, I can go on and on about it) but I think the one that sums up Kunal's state of mind perfectly is "I don't love... love!" He simply can't bring himself to say he doesn't love Kuhu (and he even says something to this effect when he confesses that he's tempted to be less negative when he looks in her eyes), so instead he rejects the emotion of love altogether because it has given him nothing but pain -- first, when Shweta abandoned him, and at this point when when he can feel Abir start to slip away because of his love for Mishti. I feel like this dialogue echoes even now in his hesitation to put that particular label on his feelings for Kuhu.

Okay, now I must run off and watch that scene on repeat again. ❤️

@bold 2: Oh totally! Ritvik's silent performance in that scene and the glances that Kunal and Kuhu exchanged were so beautiful and sad. Even there, I feel like Kunal was about to go talk to Kuhu when Abir came in. Through their conversation Kuhu kept glancing over at Kunal -- she so badly wanted him to say something but I think his inferiority complex kicked in, and he figured, when she has Abir, why would she want to hear anything I have to say? It took him three months to realise he was the only one she really wanted to hear from. 💔

That's a really good observation, I forgot about that scene! Well for one thing, Kunal forgets about everything else in matters concerning Abir, so it's no surprise that he dismisses Shweta. I can't say for sure, but I feel that Kunal, in wanting to give her a piece of his mind, and also dismissing the possibility of them getting back together from her mind, he may have said that piece about her not being able to separate him and Kuhu.

To my recollection, Kunal has only had one genuine conversation about Kuhu with Abir, and that was the night before the dreaded divorce date (and even then, he doesn't talk about his feelings, he talks about how important she is to the family). Before that, I don't remember Kunal having a conversation with Abir about his feelings for Kuhu that was actually genuine. He had faked it initially to lead Abir on into thinking that he liked Kuhu. But someone correct me if I'm forgetting something.

I think a real mark of Kunal's love will be when he really opens up to Abir about how he feels about Kuhu. Abir is the most important part of his life (arguably his entire life), so whatever Kunal genuinely shares with Abir carries a certain amount of significance and weight.

@ bold 1: I miss early KuKu!! I keep jumping back to the "hamari kahaani kuch aur ho sakti thi" line, and it just makes me wonder what really would have happened if their siblings had never fallen in love? Would Kunal and Kuhu be at a different stage in their relationship, perhaps a more advanced stage? Guys, we gotta get this "what if...?" game going!!!

@ bold 2: For sure! No one ever bothers to take Kuhu seriously, and this is something Kuhu tells Kunal when she's pouring her heart out to him on the swing before their first marriage. The fact that he not only listens to her advice, but implements it, speaks volumes about how much more of a mature person he treats her as, which probably means a heck of a lot to her.

@ bold 3: That #dufferchokro, I'm telling you 🤦🏽‍♀️

Meera, that's a really interesting perspective! I have always thought Abir would be the last person Kunal talks to about his feelings because Abir tends to force Kunal's hand and make him go much faster than he's prepared to. So Kunal only tells Abir what he's already sure of, and not what he is mulling over. Plus, Kunal feels as the mediator between Meenu and Abir, that he has to take himself out of the equation -- he shares very little of his true feelings with Meenu either. I can't tell you how many times during Kuhu and Kunal's friendship I wanted to jump into the screen and tell Abir and Nanu to BE COOL!

Kunal makes indepedent decisions when he's given advice/information/criticism and then left in peace and solitude to mull it over before he has to act. The only people who have given him the space to make his own decisions are Kuhu and Parul, and definitely Kuhu more so. This is why she is the only person with whom he's shared his confusions and struggles (like how to accept Parul in the green tea scene). Parul was also getting there (if you notice, his decision to support Abir came after she told him why Abir broke up with Mishti and then he had the whole night to think it over) but this public acknowledgment thing came in the middle.

Abir wants a quick-fix solution for problems and Kunal is all about solutions that will last long-term. Now that Abir has tried and failed at mending the sisters' relationship, I am curious to see what Kunal's approach is.

This deserves a seprate, longer conversation when everyone is here, but can we just talk about how AWESOME Kuhu was around Shweta?

@ bold: Yes, I agree, which is precisely why I think Kunal telling Abir how he feels about Kuhu will be the most solid affirmation of his love for her.

I really like how the writers didn't make Kuhu an overly jealous and petty girl around Shweta. She was extremely confident of herself the whole time, and she was never shown to have feelings of self-doubt or insecurity around her, despite the fact that Shweta is your stereotypical, "the girl who was super popular in school", type of person. And however naive she may have been to trust Kunal, at least she wasn't about throwing a fit about how Shweta was attempting to glue herself to Kunal. She was calm, composed, and extremely confident. And that is how you create a strong, incredibly attractive, "aaj ki ladki" female lead.
