Very nice story! Do continue soon âș
"We should not be asking who this child belongs to, but who belongs to this child."
Calcutta
Prerna stepped out of the car and analyzed the area her family was living in and to say it was terrible would be an underestimation. She took her cell phone and made a call to her assistant
âMr. Mehta are the preparations done??â She asks as soon as he picks up.
âYes, yes maâam, I have got the keys you can arrive whenever you wantâŠâ He replies hurriedly.
âOkay stay there I will be reaching there in an hourâŠâ with that she cuts the call and makes her way in the shacky cabin her family called home.
Even when she was there with her family the things never came down to point where her family would have to live in such condition, when she saw her mother that day in such condition it broke her heart into millions of pieces, only she knew how she held on to herself and didnât breakdown right there and then. She was a mother herself who lost her daughter, she clearly understands what her mother would have gone through when she disappeared without leaving behind any traces of her. She takes a shaky breath as she pushes the door and it opens with a jerk.
She steps in and comes face to face with her mother and sister sitting on a little wooden cot as they were talking about their condition. She heard everything and swallowed the lump in her throat before knocking at the door and grabbing their attention.
Her mother looks up to see her daughter and immediately all the worries vanishes from her face, her eyes start to twinkle as she stands up and meets her halfway in a hug âPrerna Meri bachiâŠâ
She hugs her tightly forgetting everything that was happening in her life for a moment, she hugged as she recalled the moments they spent together as a family. She felt a pair of other arms holding her and looked up to see Shivi and Mahesh have joined the hug. She opens her arms to take all of them into a hug as tears wells up in her eyes.
âFinally, she got her family backâŠâ They break the hug when her mother holds her hands âAja beth ke baten karte hainâŠâ Prerna holds her hand back and stops her from moving âWe will sit and we will talk as much as you want but not here, we will talk once we get back to our homeâŠâ Her mother looks at her quizzically âOur Home?â
Prerna nods âYes Maa our home, the home we grew up in, the home with which all our memories, babaâs memories are attached⊠I have brought our home back and registered it on your name, we can go back to our homeâŠâ
She could see the expression of resistance on the face of Veena when she speaks up gripping her hands tightly âMaa, baba use to say Iâm equal to his son, so if a son would have brought you a house wonât you be delighted and excited to step into one then why not now Maa, canât a daughter do this much for her familyâŠâ She asks her with hopeful eyes and Veena gives up.
Prerna arrive at the old house this time along with her family, her driver opens the door for her and Mr. Mehta hurries forwards and hands her the keys. She takes it from him âThank you, Mr. MehtaâŠâ He nods back and leaves.
She forwards the key to her mother and gestures her to open the gate. Veena takes the keys with shaky hands and opens the gate with tears of happiness streaming down her face. Prerna keeps the hand on her shoulder and she holds on to that smiling at her family who smiles back as they step into their house. They never imagined someone would lift the dark veil covering their lives for eight years in such a beautiful way.

Lonavla
Mr. Bajaj lifts the little girl in his arms who was still latched onto the stuffed dog which she was holding close to her heart and move towards his car âAshok drive the car to the nearest hospital; she is injured we canât wait for the ambulanceâŠâ He orders as he climbs to sit in the backseat with the girl in his arms.
Ashok nods at him, and hurriedly starts the car. Mr.Bajaj looks at the little girl in his arms who was still looking back at him with her big eyes. She was conscious but there were multiple scratches on her body, her frock was torn and to him, it seems she was in shock.
They reached the hospital and she was immediately shifted to the emergency ward. Mr. Bajaj stood beside her as doctors examined her.
One nurse tried to take the stuffed dog from her that is when she cried, no matter what the nurse did she wasnât letting go of the toy. She reasoned her, tried to take it forcefully she still held onto it tight while yelling âNoâŠâ
Mr. Bajaj who was witnessing all of this gestured the nurse to stop and asked the doctor to do whatever they want to do with her toy by her side.
After the basic emergency treatment, she was shifted to the emergency ward, where the nurse was fixing her blanket, He saw how she pulled her toy and turned her face so even he couldnât take it away from her.
âHow old?â He asks
âeightâŠâ She replies burying her face into her toy
âNot you, him!â he points out
âHe is still 4âŠâShe replies looking down.
âWhat is his name?â He asks trying to get her to speak
âMaxâŠâ She gives a pat reply
âI seeâŠâ He says as he sees the doctor approaching then nods at the nurse and leaves to meet the doctor, and two curious pairs of eyes followed him till he disappeared.
âHow is she, Doctor?â Mr. Bajaj asked as soon as they stepped into the doctorâs office.
âOh, thankfully she is fine, there are multiple scratches and bruises on her body which we have disinfected and we got her CT scan report back, she has mild hematoma that is mild bleeding in her brain probably because of the fall she took, We will keep her under observation for the night and try to resolve it with the medicines, if that doesnât work then we will proceed to remove it surgicallyâŠâ the doctor explains it to Mr. Bajaj who listened to everything contently until he heard the word surgery.
âYou said surgery, is it a matter of concern?â he asks with worries evident in his voice.
âNo donât worry Mr. Bajaj it would be a small surgery if the clot doesnât resolve with the medicines but trust me, she will surely be fineâŠâ The doctor assures him.
He shakes hands with the doctor and steps out of the office to see his assistant Kumar talking to the Police. The Inspector greets him to which he nods back. Kumar hurriedly shakes hands with the Inspector and approaches Mr. Bajaj who was walking towards the emergency ward.
âIs everything fine Sir?â He asks following him
âYes, you got any information regarding the little girl, why arenât her parents here yet?â He asks in his usual robotic tone.
âSir, she doesnât have any ParentsâŠâ Mr. Bajaj stops in his tracks hearing that and turns to look at his assistant who hastily speaks up just by seeing the look on his face âshe lives in an orphanage and seems like she sneaked out of the orphanage in the evening, the authorities have informed the orphanage the attendant will be here soonâŠâ He says everything in one breath.
His jaw clenches as he nods at his assistant then turns around and resumes walking towards the emergency ward.
Kumar starts following him again âSir you can leave now, Iâll handle everything and make sure she is fine, tomorrow you have a meeting to attend sirâŠâ
Bajaj nods his head in negative âIâll stay here and leave once I make sure she is fine and in safe hands, what kind of crappy orphanage is that which couldnât even ensure the security of an eight-year-old, tomorrow I want all information regarding her on my deskâ He once again turns around which halts Kumar in his track as he was following him really closely âand you tell the clients that the meeting is postponed for some emergency reasonsâŠâ
Kumar nods then shakes his head in negative âBut Sir all the preparations have been done and they are the owners of giant corporationsâŠâ he stops as he eyes the looks on his Employers face.
âThen tell them, Kumar, that for working with us they need to have the necessary patience and if they donât have it⊠they can gladly leaveâŠâ He says in a challenging tone and deep-down Kumar knew who has the upper hand and knowing how ruthless businessman he is no client will be leaving Lonavla without attending the damn meeting.
He gulps and nods his head furiously âYesâŠyes, sir, Iâll make sure everything sure everything happens smoothly and tomorrow youâll have all the information about NehaâŠâ
Bajaj raises his eyebrows questioningly at that âNehaâŠâ
Kumar shakes his head âOh, I forgot to tell you, Sir, her name is NehaâŠâ
Bajaj slowly nods his head at Kumar and walks back to the Emergency ward, so many things happened and his brain was taking its time to process everything at its own pace.
*****************
He lazily takes off his coat and keeps it on the bench before slumping down on the same bench which was lying at the end of the emergency ward.
He glances at the curtain covering Nehaâs bed and shifts his gaze back to hands. He couldnât understand what was this feeling that wasnât letting him leave. He saved the life, he is taking care of the medical bills, he should be on his way to his hotel suite and resting on his warm bed but all he was doing is to laze around this emergency ward âWhy?â he asks to himself.
Was it because her eyes remind him of âPrerna⊠the old Prernaâ those little doe-shaped pairs held so many emotions in one moment and in next they were empty, no matter how much he tries to just leave he couldnât bring himself to leave after watching and listening about her condition.
His phone buzzed and he picks it up to see "Prerna's" name shining on the screen. He sighs knowing she might have got the news about the accident "Kumar" he grits his teeth.
He picks it up and before even he could greet, he hears her worry laced voice "Hello, Mr. Bajaj, are you okay, Kumar just told me about some accident and said you are in a hospital, are you fine, why aren't you answering..."
He chuckled "I will answer once you'll let me answer Mrs.Bajaj..." he senses the silence on the other end and realizes what he said, he sighs and corrects himself "I mean Prerna, I'm fine, I wasn't the one hurt in the first place so you don't need to worry..."
Prerna took a deep sigh, she was hell worried when she heard about the accident, more than that what shocked her was his calling her "Mrs. Bajaj...". Its been eight years and in those eight years, he never called her "Mrs. Bajaj" when they were alone communicating. It was surprising but it didn't irk her like the way he thought.
Bajaj heard her sigh and relaxes "Prerna I'm really fine, so get yourself some sleep and I'll explain everything to you once I get back home... okay..." she hummed in response
"Take care..." He wishes
"You too, take care..." Bajaj sensed she wanted to say something more, he could imagine her restless face, he knows her confused tone way better than she knew it.
"Prerna... What is it?" He voices out
"Yes ah... Mr.Bajaj..hmm...well...you know... you can call me Mrs. Bajaj if you want, I don't mind it... okay... take care bye..." She cuts the call.
He looks at the screen and smile makes it way to his face "Well thanks, Kumar..."
He keeps thinking about this change while staring into the nothingness when the ruffling of the curtain brought him back out of his reverie and his head shoots up to see the stuffed dog âMaxâ head poking out of the curtain.
His lips curl up in a smile as he says âFive minutesâŠâ
A second later, she pokes her head out of curtain too just above maxâs head to look at him questioningly.
âFive minutes after then youâll go back inside and sleepâŠâ he offers
She nods her head diligently at him, her two ponytails jingling with it and approaches him slowly still latched onto Max as she stands in front of him.
âArenât you cold?â Bajaj asks picking up his coat
She pat nods her head at him and he covers her up with his coat. He bites back his laugh as he looks at her, his coat covering her from neck to foot, she looked like a walking coat. He picks her up and gently and makes her sit beside him.
âMister you didnât try to take Max away from me?â she asks curiously eyeing him.
âBecause he is important to you, right?â he replies looking straight.
She looks down then looks back at him as if contemplating then slowly speaks drawing Max near to her âYou know, Atul snatched Max and threw him out of the busâs windowâŠâ Mr. Bajaj looks down at her listening to each word carefully âThen?â he asks
âWhen I went back to get Max, I fell down from the ledge and I couldnât moveâŠâ She replies hugging Max tightly.
âIs he that important to you?â Bajaj asks still comprehending.
She nods her head âMax and I have to be together foreverâŠâ She sniffs.
âWhy do you call him âMaxâ? Mr. Bajaj asks trying to distract her from that event.
She looks down at Max âmy pet dog. But he died before longâŠâ
âI seeâ he replies eyeing Max
âYes. So did dadaâŠâ she says looking down
His heart softens âWhat about your mom?â He asks
She shrugs âMama went far awayâŠâ she replies looking ahead.
âAnd dad?â he draws
She shrugs again this time picking her head up to look up at him âMiss Neenu told the warden that after mama left, baba didnât want me thatâs why he left me with dada and went away after mamaâ he felt like his heart suffered a hairline fracture after hearing that. He wanted to excuse himself and go teach this someone called miss Neenu something about sensitivity and decency but shrugs his head âHe can surely do this laterâ
âMister, what about your mama?â She asks
Mr. Bajaj didnât expect that question to come to his way but sighs deeply âShe went far awayâŠâ
âReallyâŠâ her eyes grew big.
He shrugs eyeing her âI was left behind tooâŠâ
âYou tooâŠâ she confirms
He nods back and then looks ahead. Her curious gaze doesnât waver from his face, she looks down at Max and then looks back at him again before pushing Max towards him âIâll lend you, MaxâŠâ
Mr. Bajaj felt his heart-melting, the single gesture made his heart go warm, this kiddo who wasnât letting go of her toy for anything was ready to share it with him just to cheer him up.
He smiles and pats her head âFive minutes are up, let's go back to bed...â she smiles and pulls Max back before getting down of the bench.
He stands up to walk her back when she holds his hand, her other hand holding Max close to her heart.
He looks down at her âa little strange munchkin just stole his heart away with her kindnessâŠâ and he isnât even mad at himself for that.
He slowly walks her back to her bed.
*****************
The next day he arrives early at the hospital after the doctor calls him informing him that they are proceeding with the surgery as the clot wasnât resolving.
He reaches the directed room only to hear Nehaâs screams from the inside. His heart drops, he rushes inside to see nurses struggling with her as she wasnât letting Max go.
He interrupts them as he asks the nurse to step back.
Neha looks at him with tearful eyes, hiccupping as she tightly hugs Max. He leans down towards her and gently asks wiping her tears âYou know right now youâll sleep for some time and Max will be all alone why donât you let Max stay with me till the surgery endsâŠâ
She hiccups âThen who will stay with me?â She asks sniffing
Mr. Bajaj smiles at that and holds her hand âI will stay with you; I promise once you come out of the surgery room I and Max will be waiting there for you... And once you'll open your eyes you'll find me by your side holding your hand..."
âPromise?â she raises her pinky towards him
He chuckles intertwining his pinky with hers âPromise.â
She smiles at him then hands max over to him as nurse take over to prepare her for the operation, he keeps on standing there with Max assuring her with his eyes till they roll her into the Operation theater.
He looks down at Max âDonât worry Max, she will be fineâŠâ

"And I saw myself through your eyes... and fell in love with that version of mine..."
Bajaj sighs and closes his eyes as he basks in the sun, relaxing on the mildly wet sand on the beach, he let go of all the worries and enjoys the moment.
He opens his eyes and smiles seeing Neha dragging Max along with her to show him the sandcastle he and Neha built together.
He extended his stay in Lonavla from two days to a whole week. Even Prerna and Kuki were bewildered over his sudden decision as his meetings and deals never take this long but he avoided their queries by simply telling them that they will discuss everything once he gets home.
When Prerna lost her daughter and he persuaded her to move with him to London, throughout the whole flight he kept on thinking about, how is he going to help her, itâs been nearly nine months since Kuki last saw or had a conversation with Prerna, In those nine months she had surely moved on from her and he wanted the relationship between them to have same fondness as before.
He knew Kuki was the only person who can help Prerna heal or return to a somewhat normal life and for that, he silently and slowly started to distance himself from Kukiâs life so that Prerna could have more time with her. He shifted all Kukiâs responsibilities to her, from her school to her eating to her sleeping. He knew Prerna will put all her motherly affection in this relation but for Kuki to reciprocate that he needed to take a step back and let them spend more time together. In all his quest to help Prerna heal, he missed out on lots of moments of Kukiâs childhood like taking her out on the beach or those little kitty parties she arranged with her toys and him as a guest. Prerna started taking his place in Kukiâs life to say he never missed his position would be a lie but one smile on both their faces would make him forget about his loss.
When he met Neha, he never imagined that she would be the one holding the key to the deepest treasures of his heart in which he hid his paternal affection all along.
He was a man of his word, so when that day she was shifted to the ward after Operation, he sat there holding her hand with Max lying on his lap until she opened her eyes and as per promise, she found him and Max beside her.
Bajaj witnessed the adorable smile and twinkle that adorned her eyes as she saw them and to say it made his heart warm would be an understatement.
He still remembers how her eyes went wide when he asked her if she would like to visit all the nice places in and around Lonavla with him for the rest of the five days as compensation from his side.
She smiled brightly for a moment and suddenly a nervous expression took over the smile as she eyed Max then looked back at him âWill Max come along?â
Bajaj hid his smile at her concern such astonishing loyalty she had towards Max that it always amuses as well surprises him and said: âSure we canât leave Max behind now can weâŠâ
Since then they have visited all the amazing places in and around Lonavla, Kumar was shocked as he never expected his employer to convert his business trip into a vacation from work, and his companion would be eight-year-old kiddo.
Throughout his excursion, he got to know more about Nehaâs personality. At first, he thought she might be similar to Kuki but as time went by, he realized she was not only different from Kuki but different from most of the children of her age.
To say Neha was the most patient child he has ever seen in his life, she was flexibly adaptive and rarely he would hear her complain. If she doesnât like anything, she would surely figure out a way to deal with it rather than grumbling about it and this was the quality he appeased the most in her. She had a different way to communicate with him too if he picked her up and she wanted to get down she wonât say but just take off her arms from his shoulder which meant she wanted to walk, if the food is too spicy for her then she would start to pick the non-spicy items from it and eat or she would tap her foot when sleepy. It took time but Bajaj perceived her gestures and read them easier than most of the people around her.
Bajaj thought perhaps he could relate to her childhood because they practically had the same childhood, left alone, abandoned, the only difference was it left him bitter but she transformed herself into a kind soul and the only thing similar was their possessiveness and loyalty toward the thing or person they love.
Sometimes he wondered how privileged the people will be who will have the honor of being loved by her as if she could love and protect Max (a stuffed toy) with everything she has, how much is she going to adore the people whom she considered hers.
Somewhere along with the contentment he had this sad feeling in the pit of his stomach as today was the last day he will enjoy in the company of this chipmunk and from tomorrow the same drill will begin, sometimes he wondered was he a real Robot? why donât someone reach out or try to discover the human form of his under the countless covers with which life has wrapped him, with Neha he has this feeling of being dragged out as her little hand holds his enormous one and constantly drag him out of the darkness he keeps slipping in.
She came back and plopped down beside him with Max in her lap as they view the sunset.
Slowly he reached out and kept a hand on her head âNehaâŠâ she looks up to see him.
He sighed his heart growing heavy âBut he has to say thisâ âTomorrow Iâll be leaving bachaâŠâ
The twinkle in her glowing eyes vanished as if someone just turned off the light bulb, she kept on staring at him and then slowly tried to smile, he saw her struggle and it just broke his heart, she bobbed her head at him and tighten her hold at Max.
He patted her head âWill you see me off but the condition is No tears only SmileâŠâ he asks.
She looks up âNo tearsâŠâ she asked as if confirming and he nods at her.
The drive back to Orphanage was a silent one, he didnât know how to break this one, it felt awkward, uncomfortable like everything around him admonishing his decision of leaving.
He felt like he was giving up on something really precious to him and nothing around him was supporting his decision as if his own being and soul were displeased with him.
******************
The next morning Kumar brought lots of gifts for the children in Orphanage as per his employer asked him, they also fulfilled all their deprivations and wrote them a heavy amount to cover remaining necessities.
Bajaj asked the warden for Neha, they sat him down in the waiting room as the attendant went in search of her. He waited for fifteen minutes and stood when he saw attendant approaching him but no signs of Neha, He looks around the attendant and then back at him to see his guilty face as he utters âMr. Bajaj she doesnât want to see you off⊠we tried to coax her but she just plainly refused and isnât budgingâ
He groans silently âWhat did he expect she would run to him and give him a good-bye hug for leaving her behind?â
âTake me to herâŠâHe orders the attendant.
The attendant guided him toward the shaded play area, it was empty as kids were hushed into the classrooms, from far he could see his chipmunkâs back sitting on the swing hugging Max, he could imagine Max glowering at him for making his friend sad, he shrugged his head and gestured attendant to leave.
He silently occupied the swing next to hers âSo no seeing offâŠâ He utters.
She looks up plopping her head over maxâs head to see him, and then slowly drops her eyes to the floor again shaking her head in negative.
âWhy?â He asks
âYou said no tears, I couldnât do thatâŠâ She replies in a small voice.
Bajaj's heart melted like ice at her voice. He could feel a pressure in his throat and a burning sensation in his sinuses, he felt tears pricking his eyes. A decision had to be made right now and he made one.
He got up from the swing and crouched in front of her, not giving a damn about dirtying his Armani suit.
âWill you see me offâŠâ he asked
She nods her head in negative still looking down.
âWill Max see me off âŠâ he asks again
She eyes Max then nods her head in negative again.
âWill you come with me then?â He asks hopefully.
She nods her head in negative again but then her head shoots up as she stares at him wide-eyed. He could see her lips quivering, her eyes filling with tears, two tears slip down her cheeks before she breaks down.
Bajaj picks her up from the swing and hugs her close to his chest, max squished between them. She wraps her tiny arms around his neck still crying. He hushes her swinging back and forth as he pats her head, his own tears betraying him.
A moment later when she calmed down, she looks up to himâCan max come along?â She asks sniffing.
Bajaj lets out a laugh âthe little loyal friendâ âYes, we canât leave Max behind now can weâŠâ he replies kissing the top of her head.
