Most of the time in very difficult game when there is a coin very strong protecting king. Or the king is surrounded by all best coins and its difficult to attack. Or the king have set coins against queen trapping her. We use knight to break the trap , to break the circle, to make king use wrong move. But in thay process always! Knight dies.

This is my personal exp about chess board
