It's not about the morality of the character, but how well the character was played and etched out that matters.
Also, Alia's behavior wasn't justified in the movie, Shahid's was. Makes a difference

Kabir was justified in hitting Preeti?
Keep in mind I haven’t seen either movie so my opinion is based on bits and pieces I have seen and all the online talk. While Alia’s character was toxic and she did physically attack someone her behavior falls in the “cat fight” category. Shahid’s was flat out domestic abuse. No excuses for Alia’s character. She committed assault and got away with it, right? But a physical brawl at a bar or restaurant is not at the same level as domestic abuse. Also, didn’t Kabir Singh the movie start with a rape scene being committed by Kabir?

It wasn't a cat fight she just up and broke a beer bottle on another girl because her boyfriend was flirting with her.
In Kabir Singh he slapped her because they were having an argument. It was in the heat of the moment.
While both behaviour are not ok. The one in KS was more understandable.

@bold was disturbing because of the way it played out. It started out as something consensual but when the girl wanted to backed out he threatened her with a knife.
This should have sparked more debate about it not being okay. Even if a guy is hot and bothered, he can't expect a woman to sleep with him against her will.

You misunderstood me. I'm saying GB did not present Alia as justified in doing it. KS presented Shahid's actions as justified. I'm not saying either is all right.

Oh OK got it. Thank you for clarifying.

No I understand that what Alia’s character did was very violent and potentially fatal in a real world context. But it was not domestic violence.
Shahid’s character may have been in the heat of the moment but it was domestic abuse because she was his girlfriend.
I think that’s what’s making people draw the line with KS. Actors have won awards for playing gangsters and drug dealers and all of these involve acts of violence and even murder. Didn’t Ritesh Deshmukh win (though not Filmfare) for playing a serial killer in Ek Villain? But I think as members of society we witness or are aware of domestic abuse in some capacity in our day to day lives and dealings with friends or acquaintances, or sometimes family, so it’s a lot more real to us. It is one of the more harsher realities of life, as is the fact that all too often the abuser doesn’t face any consequences or backlash. So when a movie comes that it seems to want to glorify it it hits a nerve with a lot of people.
Acting awards should be solely given on the basis of how well the actor performed in that role.
What is gross is that some of the people who called out the problems with Kabir Singh's character and made a hue and cry about the film, were also the ones to hail Safeena's character as something revolutionary or feminist.
Both characters were abusive. Period.
People who react diffrently to these two characters are just hypocrites.
