CHAPTER 9
SAME NIGHT
ADITYA’S HOUSE,
9.30 PM
Aditya sat in the comfort of his bed in his minimally designed huge studio apartment, which suited his requirements as he was mostly traveling. Ever since he left his parent's house, this has been his permanent address since then. He was working on his presentation he was to give to THRIVE BEVERAGES team in two days. He checked his email and a name on the list of members at THRIVE he was going to meet, made him think of a meeting two weeks ago with one of the members on the list.
FLASHBACK
TWO WEEKS AGO
STARBUCKS, ANDHERI (MUMBAI)
2.30 PM
In a dimly lit private area of the cafe, Atidya was impatiently waiting for this person he came to meet. He shook his right leg and checked the time on his phone several times.
Frown on his face was soon replaced by a smile as he saw a lady dressed in formal attire walking towards him. He immediately got up from his place and escorted her to their reserved table. He pulled the chair and the lady took her seat while throwing her blazer and bag on the side chair that was unoccupied.
“So Aditya, why did you call me here? It's been so long since we met even though we have been in the same town for more than two months ever since you are heading POLARIS” asked the lady around 35, with a serious look on her face.
“First of all Menaka, thanks a lot for coming here on such a short notice,” hot cups of vanilla cappuccinos were served and they both waited for the serving staff to leave before they continued their conversation.
“Its alright Aditya, itna to main kar hi sakti hu. You have always been there for me whenever I needed you. So please don't thank me. By the way, thank you so much for ordering my favourite drink. I so very much needed it” she smiled as she looked at her cup of coffee. “Anyway, jaldi batao kyun bulaya mujhe? I have to rush for another meeting in an hour, so whatever it is, let’s get to the point” she said checking her meetings schedule on her phone.
“Sure, you remember you told me your company Thrive is working on a new cola drink to launch and increase its market share? What’s the status on that?” his body language gave away on his curiosity.
“Aditya, its a top secret of our organisation, you can’t just mention it like this in public. So keep your voice low as we can’t afford to leak this news in public yet” said Menaka widening her eyes.
“I am so sorry, I was just way too curious to know about it” Aditya looked around if his voice grabbed any unwanted attention.
“It’s alright just don’t do it again. Everything is set and we plan to launch it this month itself. We have it planned and soon it will be disclosed. As we discussed in our earlier meetings while you were consulting our firm, we are looking forward to capture a huge market and increase our market share to a great extent. Final stage work is going on brand image and campaign plans” said Menaka who was excited and eagerly waiting for the launch as this was one of the most ambitious projects she was involved in at THRIVE BEVERAGES.
“That’s really great news, Menaka. You know mujhe isi bare mein baat karni thi tumse. I am heading POLARIS now and I have a strategy in mind that will not just work to increase your market share and revenues, but also place this new launch as a brand of its own. At the same bite into a huge share of your only rival in the market, that..”
“That’s Turkey Hill Bevs, 55% stakes of which are with Bajaj Infragiant owned by we both know- Rishabh Bajaj. Am I right?" Menaka completed Aditya’s sentence before he could.
“Yes, you are right. Rishabh Bajaj” Menaka saw Aditya closing his fingers into a tight fist.
“I was so happy when you moved into Socio-Dev Sector and did independent consulting projects like you did with us. Why did you get into this mess again? I am over that phase Aditya, why don’t you get over it too?” Menaka asked and kept her hand over his tightly closed fist. She could feel his hand muscles relax.
“I did move on Menaka, but when I heard he is back in India I just couldn’t stop myself. It could have been easier for you to move on but not for me” Aditya had a defeated look on his face.
“I understand Aditya, and choice tumhari hai tum kya karna chahte ho. But jo kuch bhi hua uske liye zimmedar kya sirf akela Rishabh tha?” Aditya was stunned and Menaka looked into his eyes and gave him a questioning glance.
“Anyway, tum jab bhi ready ho with your plan, I will have a meeting scheduled for your presentation. Mujhe bas ek-do din pehle call kar dena. We are very sure, you’d do an amazing job. THRIVE anyway has been trying to get ahead of THB, so if your plan helps us then, I am sure THRIVE would welcome it. They are already impressed by you” picked up her jacket and bag while speaking with Aditya.
She got up and looked at Aditya who was a bit lost in his thoughts. She knocked on the table surface to grab his attention and bend to face him “Jo maine kaha uske bare mein sochna Aditya. I will see you soon”
She placed a soft kiss on his cheek and whispered in his ears “Bye BHAI, I love you” and left Aditya lost in his thoughts
FLASHBACK ENDS
Aditya’s chain of thoughts broke because of his phone that buzzed next to him in his bed.
"Bandana, how are you?" Aditya responded and kept his laptop aside and got up from his bed.
Bandana Acharya responded in her evert cheerful voice "Hello.Aditya, Kemon acho?"
"Bhalo Bandana. Bas isse zyada Bengali na samjh payunga, aur bolne ka to sawaal hi nahi uthta" Aditya chuckled while he added some water to a pot for his black coffee.
" Acha Aditya, did you get time to check the proposed project plan? If there is anything you don't like please mujhe bata dena, we will rework on that. Basanti ke bacche are very excited" , said Bandana.
"I checked the project on my way home and I simply loved it. The idea of a community center managed and run by community kids is fabulous. I can already imagine those kids learning so many skills and contributing to the betterment of Basanti. By the I noticed a new name on your presentation, Prerna Sharma. New joinee?" Rishabh added some coffee beans to his coffee maker.
"Tum sab notice kar lete ho.. Prerna is our new joinee. Last week hi join kiya. Young and hard working girl. Ek week mein hi she visited Basanti 3 times and waha ke logo ke sath aisey mix ho gayi hai jaise saalon se un sabke sath hi rehti hai. If fact don't be surprised if I tell you that Community Center idea was hers and she only prepared the detailed budget breakup report. I will not shy away from accepting that this is one of our best reports ever made, because all the with minutest of details that she has included while planning." Bandana was really impressed Prerna's work and how dedicated she has been towards her work right from day one.
"Amazing, she is going to be a great asset. Where did she work before? Maybe I have already met her" asked Aditya as he poured his black coffee in his favourite mug. He grabbed his mug and made himself comfortable on his couch.
"She is a fresher. This is her first work experience. She is from the same college that Ayesha studied in, junior by a year. Ayesha only recommended her and I am proud of Ayesha for her choice"
"Ayesha is an amazing girl Bandana, she has to be.. afterall she is your daughter. Though I don't need to say this to you but groom and train Ms. Sharma well as I see a lot of potential in her, something she herself might not be aware of at this stage and congratulate her for a job very well done. By the way, I'll have your first round of funds released in a week's time as promised. All my connections were just waiting for my nod"
"I will convey the message to her, that’ll be a huge encouragement for her. Anyway, how's your new life as head of POLARIS? Honestly I didn't really understand your decision, but I am sure you must have given it a thought. Tum bina soche samjhe aisey hi to kuch nahi karoge" Aditya could sense a bit of a worry for himself in Bandana's voice.
"Everything happens for reason.. I am sorry Bandana I am getting another important call.. I will speak to you soon..Good night" he made an excuse and disconnected the call. He picked up his mug from the coffee table and went to his bed to finish his presentation for THRIVE.
SHARMA NIWAS, CALCUTTA
10.00 PM
Prerna came down almost running over towards Veena and hugged her tightly from behind.
“Arey Priyu aram se, kya hua itni khush lag rahi ho?” Veena turned around,to face her daughter while Prerna’s arms were still on her shoulder.
“Maa guess what? Ms. Acharya ka call aya tha. Donors ko humara presentation bhaut zyada pasand aya. Ms. Acharya ne kaha Ki Mr. Adhiraj jo humein unke connections ke through fund kar rhe hai unhe mere ideas bhaut hi zyada ache lage and he conveyed his wishes through Ms. Acharya. Unhone kaha, she is very proud of me”
Prerna almost danced in mother’s room “main bhuat zyada khush hu Maa, main aapko bata bhi nahi sakti” she said on her mother’s bed.
“Maine apna kitna time yuhi waste kia aaj mujhe realise ho raha hai’ Prerna almost had tears of joy in her eyes and lowered her head in her mother’s lap.
“Tumhare Baba humesha se kehte the tum jab bhi kuch kroge apna best hi dogi, islie hum itne surprised nahi hai ye sab sunkar” Veena said lovingly patting on her head.
“Maa.. thank you very much mujhe sahi rasta dikhane ke liye. Agar us din aap mujhe na samjhati to main abhi shayad ye sab samajh nahi pati. Aur main islieye bhi khhush hu coz I can now share Shekhar’s bhaiyya’s responsibilities. Maa.. aaj main aapke sath hi so jaun?” Veena smiled at her little wish and Prerna grabbed her place next to Veena. Veena went out to get fill the pitcher.
She laid straight on the bed and with a smile she stared at the ceiling. She kept her hands over her belly and that’s when she felt like she was hit hard with hard. Her smile disappeared and she realised she hadn’t yet disclosed about her Pregnancy. Only Rishabh and Anurag were aware of this truth and none of them was there for her. She was worried about how long would she be able to keep this away from her family and workplace. She thought she would need to gather courage to reveal her pregnancy but she was worried about how things would change for her if she did. She had no one to talk to.
Her chain of thoughts broke when Veena came and asked “Kya baat hai Priyu.. Humne do baar tumhe awaz di ur tum sirf chhat ki taraf dekh rhi thi. Kaha kho gayi achanak”
“Kahi nahi Maa. bas yuhi. Koi khas baat nahi. Mr. Bajaj aur Anurag ka khayal aya. Life kitne ajeeb mod se guzri un 3 mahino mein. Anurag to pata nahi Kaha hai, aur Mr. Bajaj aur Kukki.. Wo kaise honge. Tab sab sahi lagta tha but aaj sab us sab ke baare mein sochti hu to lagta hai galtiyan maine bhi ki thi. Ms. Acharya ke sath rehke kabhi kabhi aisey lagta hai jaise Mr. Bajaj ke sath lagta tha jab wo mujhe trust krte the aur motivate karte the. Tab nahi samajh aya but ab yaad karti hu to samjh ata hai kaise unhone mujhe har mushkil mein support kia. Aap to thi nahi thi but kitni baar unhone Kakima ke samne mere liye stand liya, jaisa kabhi Anurag nahi le paya kyunki wo uski Maa hai shayad isliye. Mujhe life ne ek baar Mr. Bajaj se milne ka mauka diya to main unse apni galtiyon ke liye sorry zaroor kahungi. Aur kukki, uski bhaut yaad ati hai. Wo humesha mere sath hi soti thi to uski adat se ho gayi hai. Wo log bhi mujhe yaad karte honge kya Maa?" Prerna turned on her side and hugged her mother.
"Shayad wo log bhi tumhe aise hi yaad karte honge jaise tum karti ho" Veena said and turned the side lamp off to sleep.
ALTAMOUNT TOWERS, MUMBAI
11.30 PM
Rishabh came home and directly entered his study, the only place in the entire house he could find some peace other than Kukki's room. He kept his stuff and went to his room to change. He came back to his study and settled on his couch. He lit a cigar and opened his laptop.
A knock on his door grabbed his attention. Masi came with a plate of food for him. Rishabh saw her and immediately crushed his cigar in the ashtray.
"Rishabh tum aajkal kuch zyada hi smoke nahi ka rhe ho? Laptop side rakho aur khana khao" Masi kept the plate on the table and grabbed a seat on adjacent couch.
"Subah jaldi nikal gaye aur ab itba late aaye ho. Haan haan hum jante hai kaam hai, but itna bhi kya" Rishabh quietly had his food and just asked about Kukki.
"Kukki so gai hai, tumhare aane tak hum the uske pass abhi Tanvi ko bola hai waha rehne ke liye. Aaj sote hue Prerna ka naam le rahi thi Kukki. Tumhare samne kuch kehti nahi hai but aaj apni tutor se sath bhaut kuch share kar rhi thi"
Rishabh took a deep sigh and didn't eat any further.
"I am sure yaad karti hogi Masi. Unhone sath mein 3 months spend kiye hain. Us waqt mujhse kahi zyada wo Ms. Sharma ke sath hi sara time spend karti thi. Usne pehli baar Ms. Sharma ke sath hi experiencr kiya ki ek Mom kya aur kaise hoti hai, so I can understand Kukki kya feel karti hogi. But hum is baare mein hum kuch kar bhi nahi sakte. Isliye acha hai ki hum sab usey move on karne mein help karein" he moved back in his couch and rested his head back against the back rest and closed his eyes.
"Rishabh tum utho aur chalke so jao, you look tired. Hum nahi chahte tum fir se beemar pado. Abhi ke abhi chalo humare sath. Koshish karne ki koshish bhi mat kehna, hum kuch nhi sunenge" Rishabh almost got but Mehra's call made him stop.
"Masi aap chaliye aur so jayiye, I will sleep bas is call ke baad. Important hai otherwise Mehra wouldn't have called" Masi left the study.
"Yes, Mehra what is it?"
"Sir, I just got a cue, Mr. Adhiraj met Ms. Menaka 2 weeks ago and I think he has arranged a meeting with THRIVE BEVERAGES sometime this week itself" Mr. Mehra informed Rishabh.
"Menaka" Rishabh whispered her name and sat back on the couch as if someone sucked life out of him. He closed his eyes and continued "He must be after THB now. Anyway keep a track and keep me informed of all his activities"
He disconnected the call and went closer his desk. He took out a key from his wallet and opened the drawer. After staring at a box inside the drawer, he closed it with a thud and quickly locked it away and rushed out to be with his daughter.
