Sholay is the greatest ever blockbuster in Indian cinema, so it's incomparable to modern movies.

Sooraj alluded to the fact that HAHK crossed the footfalls of Mother India and Mughal-E-Azam. I doubt it would have crossed the footfalls of Sholay.

As far as all-India footfalls go, it might be Sholay, Bahubali 2, and HAHK in that order.

Worldwide footfalls might be Sholay, HAHK, and Bahubali 2 in that order. There's Dangal too. We don't know its China footfalls.

Accto BOI, there have only been 8-10 movies with 5+ crore footfalls. Even the great DDLJ didn't manage to breach that number.

How should we really adjudge a film of its success with these constantly changing parameters at the box office? While we are being made to witness staggering growth by the year in terms of trade and number of screens, the best way to still identify the success of a film is by determining how many people bothered to see in a theater.

Of course with the growing numbers of cinemas and screens, the footfalls have rapidly increased. But are you aware the record for most footfalls for a Bollywood movie is still held by a movie that released in the early 90’s? It’s funny isn’t it?

Anyway, as we lose our focus in this complex game of 100, 200 and 300 crores, let’s rank these blockbusters based on the real benchmark of their success:

Rank 15 – Kaho Na Pyaar Hai

Tickets Sold: 3,06,00,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 14 – Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

Tickets Sold: 3,13,23,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 13 – 3 Idiots

Tickets Sold: 3,17,35,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 12 – Sultan

Tickets Sold: 3,23,43,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 11 – PK

Tickets Sold: 3,50,76,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 10 – Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Tickets Sold: 3,54,12,000

Rank 9 – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Tickets Sold: 3,56,11,000

Rank 8 – Dangal

Tickets Sold: 3,69,32,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 7 – Border

Tickets Sold: 3,70,21,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 6 – Raja Hindustani

Tickets Sold: 4,09,56,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 5 – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Tickets Sold: 4,80,89,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 4 – Gadar: Ek Prem Katha

Tickets Sold: 5,09,54,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 3 – Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Hindi)

Tickets Sold – 5,40,43,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 2 – Sholay

Tickets Sold: 5,52,34,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

Rank 1 – Hum Aapke Hain Koun!

Tickets Sold: 7,39,67,000

Ranked: 15 Bollywood Blockbusters That Sold The Maximum Tickets At Box Office

There you have it! Box office figures do not necessarily give us the picture we really need. While Hum Aapke Hain Koun may have been falling quite below in the list of highest grossing biggies, nothing can’t take away the fact that it has been watched by most number of people in theaters.

Please do check any BO website or printed generals of komal nahta's film information magazine for the proof.

Hahk is indeed the biggest hit ever in any language.

Current adjusted NET of hahk is 711 crores,

more than ANY movie's lifetime net.

Bahubali in ALL LANGUAGES stands at 600 crores adjusted net (1 & 2 each)

Gadar is 500-600 crores

Ddlj that has been dragged for decades, is almost HALF of Hahk's adjusted net

Dangal is around 450 crores net.

Sholay also stands below 700 crores adjusted NET

Hahk's gross is almost 1,600 crores while sholay's gross is at around 1400-1500 crores.

As far as the footfalls of Sholay is concerned, that time in 70's there was NO VCR culture and people were bound to see the movies in cinemas only, while during Hahk's time its pirated copies were circulating from the 2nd day itself, so the difference is bound to happen...yet the inflation adjusted net of Hahk is more than Sholay....and the lifetime inflation adjusted net business is the main catalyst/deciding factor that's taken into consideration while comparing one film's business with another.

Mughal E Azam has more footfalls than HAHK, and Mother India's sources are not clear, but it also has chances of having more.

This list counts only Hindi collections of Bahubaali 2, doesn't include the Telugu, Kannad, Malayalam and Tamil versions.

Here is the all India, all format domestic gross list for movies post 1994.

https://www.boxofficeindia.com/all_format_india_nett.php

Look at those figures.

Also BOI and most others box office sites has only data for movies post 1990s, so you can't use HAHK being number one there, as a proof for movies like Sholay and Mughal E Azam, which released pre 1990s.

BOI itself wrote (under Hank's business details) that hahk broke sholay's long held 19 years old adjusted net business record.
