Karan is completely inconsistent with his wants and his thoughts. And that's literally the only consistency that exists to his character.
Some years ago I read an interview of the DMG writer who wrote about Armaan's character sketch about how his core was the same, earlier they were on the lighter side so his extremes were funny, but later, his love and his angst and hatred became extreme which was natural for him, and the ugliness of his core traits started to show more. I lost the link for that IV but I can relate that to Karan here.
He was always opinionated, fierce, strong-headed, judgemental. Earlier, there wasn't anything SO strong that he could make an error about. But now, he's just completely zapped with regards to Preeta. Like Rishabh once said, one never knows whether Uske Pyaar mein nafrat hai ya nafrat mein Pyaar. Karan also said, she would never be his wife but would always be his wife. Basically, he's one of those self-destructive people who believe in tying themselves to the very thing/person they hate coz their life is incomplete or nonexistent if that hatred were to cease. At this point, if Karan ended up in a position where he's unable to hate Preeta anymore, I am sure he won't be able to survive that ordeal. For example, if something happens to Preeta, he won't stand it, coz the hatred that burns within him was borne from the immense friendship he had for her. So the intensity of his feelings is still the same. It's just that, the direction of those has changed.
I remember this serial where this guy who was married again, came to visit his first dying wife who was obviously miraculously cured as soon as he came, 😆 His lines were awesome. He said, that I am able to live with the fact that I can't meet her, but knowing that if I wish to, I could meet her. If that thought were to be taken away from me, by her death, I won't be able to live.
Karan's predicament is similar, don't you think? Each time he calls Preeta, or goes to meet her, he's only consumed by the need to reach out to her, but as soon as he sees her or hears her, his uneasiness is satiated and he goes back to hating her. Or remembering to hate her.
And his inconsistent thoughts are SO glaring.
1. Earlier, he thought, she was marrying Prithvi. And he couldn't stand her happiness, so he married her for revenge.
Actual - he loved her too and couldn't stand her with anyone else. He hated her and caused her pain, but I am sure he couldn't stand the pain of seeing her with Prithvi even though he never told her that.
2. She's married him for money. This is after that stupid good for nothing notice.
Actual - this is SO in contrast with 1 that only a pig-headed man like Karan could believe it. And she even denied sending it, but he believed she was lying. If she wanted money, why would she lie about a notice? 😆
3. Her marriage to Prithvi
She's my wife, so she can't marry again. Bro, you are her husband, even you can't marry again. 😆
He is so twisted, and he's blind to his hatred and that's what they are showing.
Since, DD portrays Karan so strongly, his fallacies don't seem stupid to me, but seem like gross inconsistencies that make his personality as such. 👍🏼
I LOVED responding to you here Charu! Thanks for coming!
