Chapter 21: Kya aisa ho sakta hai?

Bas thodi der aur, Anurag Basu thought, as he desperately dug the ground with his hands."Main aa raha hu Prerna",he said breathlessly.The rapid digging was hurting his nails and fingers but Anurag Basu couldn't care less.Right now all he cared about was getting his Prerna back.His heart almost stopped when hands came in contact with a wrist.He used all his strength to pull it out and soon he found her.She was gasping for air.Her white salwar suit was colored red with blood.Cradling her in his arm, Anurag tapped her cheeks ,"Prerna!Prerna!Please,tumhe kuch nahi hoga",sobbed."A...Anurag...",Prerna said weakly."Haan, bolo na?",Anurag said restlessly.Fighting for breath she said,"Maine uss din...mandir mein tumse kaha tha na....(sobbing)......hum ek nahi ho payenge..dekho main sahi thi(trying to catch her breath)....am.. am.. sorry mujhe tumhe chhorkar jaana parega....". Through his tears,Anurag protested,"Bilkul nahi!Tum aisa kabhi nahi karogi!Humare Pyar-Prerna".To his horror, Prerna's breathing had slowed down and her eyes had started to close.Desperately shaking her, he begged,"Prerna!Prerna!Please!Aisa mat karo.Yeh nahi ho sakta...tum mujhe nahi chhorkar nahi jaa sakti".Anurag watched in shock as the life drained out of Prerna's face."Ahhhh!!",he let out a pained scream.

"Anurag!Anurag!",a voice called him from a distance.Anurag felt someone shake him as the voice got louder."ANURAG!!!!",Prerna yelled.Anurag woke up with a jolt, breathing heavily.With his mind still in his nightmare, Anurag started sobbing hysterically.Worried at this, Prerna put her hands on his face and forced him to met her eyes. She said"Anurag!Kya hua hai?".The moment Anurag's eyes met Prerna's, the first thing he felt was disbelief, followed by elation.And before Prerna could realize it,Anurag got up and hugged her tightly."Thank God.Thank God tum theek ho.",Anurag said as he buried his face in her neck.Breaking apart from her,he cupped her face saying,"Agar tumhe waha Kuch ho jaata pata nahi main Kya karta...please aisa mere saath kabhi mat karna".Saying this, he hugged her again.Confused,Prerna asked,"Anurag...Kya hua?Tumne koi bura sapna dekha kya?"."Haan",came his sad reply,"Mujhe wohi sapna phirse aaya".Patting his back in soothing circles she asked softly, "Kaunsa sapna?". "Wohi jisme Komolika ne tumhe zinda dafna diya tha aur main tumhe bacha nahi paya",Anurag replied agitatedly.Understanding his fear, Prerna broke their hug, although Anurag still held onto her.Holding his face between her hands she met his eyes."Anurag",Prerna said firmly,

" Main yaha hu, tumhare paas.Aur main tumhe chhorkar kahi nahi ja rahi.Inn teen mahino mein Jo bhi hua, aur aaj raat tumne Jo bhi dekha usse tum ek bura sapna samaj ke bhool jao kyuki woh waqt ab kabhi wapas nahi ayega.Samjhe?".Closing his eyes, Anurag let her words sink in.He lifted his one hand from Prerna's waist, and put it over her hand touching his cheek.A lone tear appeared escaped from his eye which Prerna gently wiped away.Anurag opened his eyes again.His eyes met Prerna's who smiled reassuringly and said,"Chahe jo bhi ho, main humesha tumhara saath dungi.".And Anurag and Prerna stood like this, holding onto each other, staring into each other's eyes until they were disturbed by a deep growl coming from Prerna's belly.Surprised, both of them looked down at her growing belly.Concerned, Anurag asked,"Kya baat hai, Tumhari tabiyat kharab hai Kya?". Embarrassed, Prerna replied,"Nahi, woh actually mujhe bhook lagi thi.Main Khana dhundne ke liye kitchen ja hi rahi thi ke maine tumhe neend mein chillate hue suna.".

"Oh",Anurag replied,"I hope main zyaada zor se nahi chillaya".She said reassuringly,"Arre nahi, maine tumhe utha diya tha". Prerna's stomach gave a loud growl again. Worried, Anurag asked,"Waise yeh party ki raat bhi aise hi awaaz kar raha tha.Are you sure?Isme chinta ki koi baat to nahi hai na?".Prerna replied embarrassed,"Nahi, doctor ne kaha tha ki pregnancy mein aksar aisa hota hai".At her reply, Anurag felt a little disappointed.He was the father of the child.He shouldn't have to be told this He SHOULD HAVE known this.But how could he have known this?Till date he never accompanied her for her monthly checkups to the doctor- except once right after she had told him about her pregnancy.And even that ended with Prerna categorically telling him once again that he had no place in her child's life.Well he was going to change that now.Prerna's voice broke into his thoughts,"Kya hua?",she asked confused,"Tum kis soch mein par gaye?".Anurag shook his head, and said,"Nahi, Kuch nahi.Tum yahi raho,main jaake kitchen se tumhare liye garam doodh aur cookies le aata hu.".Hearing this, Prerna made a face,"Mujhe doodh nahi pee na abhi.(eagerly)Mujhe dinner waala payesh khaana hai.Woh hoga na?".Anurag shrugged,"Pata nahi..... main jaakar dekhta hu".He was about to turn when Prerna stopped him saying,"Ruko,main bhi aati hu tumhare saath.".Saying this, Prerna led the way.Anurag gently smiled seeing the spring in her steps as Prerna eagerly headed towards the corridor. She was about to climb down the staircase when Anurag stopped her.Turning on the flashlight of his phone he said,"Yaha bohot andhera hai, tum gir jaogi(holding her hand)". As they walked down the stairs, Prerna said jokingly, "Agar paida hone se pehle hi tumhara beta mujhe itna pareshaan karega toh pata nahi(sighing) paida hone ke baad Mera Kya haal hoga...". Surprised,Anurag asked," Ek minute...tumhe kaise pata beta hi hoga?".Prerna replied,"Simple.Main Maa hu mujhe sab pata hai".Anurag gave a sarcastic reply,"Really?!Well let me tell you Ms.Prerna Sharma, iss maamle mein tum bilkul galat ho.Hume beta nahi balki ek pyaari si beti hogi, dekhna tum".Prerna shook her head,"Nahi, main jaanti hu humara beta hi hoga aur woh na bilkul Tumhari tarah hoga- Bangali Babu.Machchli, rasgulla, aur payesh ke bahaar kuch soch hi nahi payega".Anurag argued back,"Eh please, tum apne guilty pleasures ka bill meri Sneha pe mat phodho". Confused, Prerna asked, "Sneha?Ab yeh Sneha kaun hai?". Making a guilty face Anurag said,"Woh Maine Socha tha ki agar humari beti huyi uska naam hum Sneha rakhenge.". Hearing this, Prerna halted her steps.Noticing this Anurag stopped as well.Watching her silent expression, he quickly said," Agar tumhe yeh naam pasand nahi to koi baat nahi.Hum naam Kuch aur rakhlenge.". Looking at him, Prerna responded,"Ladki hui toh Sneha.Aur agar ladka hua toh?".Anurag answered,"Prem.". "Prem",Prerna repeated after him thoughtfully, "Waise tumhe yeh do naam kyun pasand hai?". Anurag hesitated for a moment but then he looked into her eyes and answered earnestly, "Kyuki jab mujhe tumse pyaar huwa tab maine sahi maayine mein samjha ki pyaar aakhir hota kya hai, aur tumse pyaar hone se pehle main apne life mein Kya miss kar raha tha .Iss liye main chahta hu, ki humare bachchon ka naam pyaar se related ho".He had said it so simply and yet so honestly that Prerna couldn't even protest at him implying that they'll have multiple children.Instead she just said,"Mujhe bhi yeh dono naam bohot pasand hai.I think humare bachchon pe yeh naam bohot suit karega.".His face lit up as she said this.Not just because she liked those names.But also because instead of rebuking him for implying that they'll have multiple kids with their impending divorce, she had actually agreed with him.Anurag cannot help but feel that slowly Prerna is coming around to forgiving him and giving their relationship another chance. He didn't dare give himself false hope.But with everything that's been going on like her moving into his bedroom(even with four spare rooms in the house),or her telling him that she'll always be with him, he couldn't help but wonder that whether Prerna too, wants to be with him?"Anurag!" Prerna's voice broke into thoughts.Leaving him at the door, she had already inside the kitchen, bending down as she checked the fridge."Haan,bolo?",came Anurag's reply.With an annoyed expression Prerna said,"Tum waha Kya kar rahe ho?Dekho na, fridge mein payesh nahi hai.". Anurag walked across the kitchen to check the fridge.And to his surprise there was no payesh left from dinner. Staring at Prerna he said, " Ab kya kare?". "Mujhe kya pata?!",Prerna replied frustratedly . Anurag said," Ek kaam karta hu, main tumhare liye doodh-". Prerna cut him off saying,"Maine kaha na mujhe doodh nahi peena!Itna bada ghar hai, itne bade log ho tum sab mujh bechaari ke liye zara sa payesh nahi chhor sakte the?".Anurag stared at her in surprise thinking, Lo ulta chor kotwaal ko daate. Dinner mein mere aur Anupam ke hisse ka bhi payesh tum khud kha gayi ab mujhe hi baatein suna rahi ho. For about five whole minutes he watched Prerna as she continued to rant about the unfairness of life, waiting for her to get it over with. Oh God, Anurag thought with frustration, kya yeh kabhi chup hogi bhi ya nahi?Just then an idea came to him. He checked the fridge once again before grabbing Prerna by the shoulders to get her attention. Prerna was completely taken aback when Anurag caught her shoulders stopping her mid-sentence.He said,"Main tumhare liye payesh banaunga abhi issi waqt.".Prerna stared at him in disbelief, before finally saying,"Anurag yeh koi sandwich nahi hai jo koi bhi banale yeh payesh hai tumse nahi hoga.". Anurag shook his head,"Nahi, maine pehle bhi payesh banaya hai.Main jab London mein rehta tha, tab main apne liye payesh khud hi banata tha.".Prerna stuck to her point,"Uss payesh mein aur Paro ke haath ke payesh mein bohot fark hai.Tum amateur ho, aur Paro saalon se yeh payesh banati aayi hai. Tumhare payesh mein woh swaad nahi aayega jo uske payesh mein hai.". Ignoring her protests Anurag bend down to the fridge taking out a bowl of soaked rice and milk.Lighting the stove he said,"Bilkul nahi, tumhe koi difference pata nahi chalega, I promise you.".Realising that she doesn't have any option but to entertain him, Prerna leaned against the kitchen counter and watched curiously as Anurag busied himself with making the dish.By the time he was done,Prerna's mouth watered as the fragrance of newly made payesh hit her nostrils.Anurag poured the payesh into two bowls and spoons and looked at Prerna.Holding the spoon he said,"Yeh lo, taste karke dekho.".Prerna took the spoon from him and took a bite.Anurag watched her nervously, eagerly waiting for her verdict.Prerna took another bite of the payesh and a moan escaped her lips.Turning to Anurag she said,"Yeh toh Paro ke payesh se bhi better hai!".Anurag smiled from ear to ear at her compliment."Thanks",he said.Taking the other bowl, he joined her.While eating Prerna asked,"Waise tumhe itna achcha payesh kaha se banana seekha?". Eating payesh from his own bowl Anurag said,"I told you na.London mein mujhe jab yeh khaane ka mann karta tha toh main apne liye khud banata tha.".Prerna asked,"Kyun?Waha pe Indian restaurants mein payesh nahi milta tha kya?".Anurag answered dismissively,"Haan, milta tha.Lekin unka taste ghar ke jaisa nahi hota tha. Toh next time jab main Kolkata aaya tha toh maine Paro se iski recipe seekh liya".Teasing him Prerna said,"Waise mujhe yakeen nahi aata ke jo Anurag Basu yaha Kolkata mein khud ek cup chai nahi banata woh London mein apne liye payesh bana sakta hai!". But Anurag didn't get annoyed at this. Instead he gave her a flirtatious smile,"Madam, yeh Anurag Basu aur kya kya kar sakta iska tumhe koi idea nahi hai.". Prerna's cheeks heated at this. Placing her finished bowl on the counter, Prerna said,"Mera ho gaya.".Anurag answered,"Mera bhi.Ruko main zara yeh bowls dho deta hu.". Anurag took both the bowls and spoons to the sink and he started to wash them.Completely unaware of the look of admiration in Prerna's eyes for him.Prerna herself didn't know exactly why she was feeling this way right now.Maybe it was the glimpse of what she has with Anurag and what she can have with him in the future, Prerna felt happier than she had felt in months."Prerna!",Anurag's voice interrupted her thoughts."Kya?",she replied.He asked,"Kya baat hai?Tum Yun khare khare smile Kyu kar rahi ho?".Prerna beamed at him and said,"Main tumhe thanks kehna chahti thi.".Anurag said ,"Kya?Tumhe iske liye thanks kehne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai.".Prerna shook her head,"Nahi, main tumse payesh khilane ke liye nahi Shivi ki help karne ke liye thanks keh rahi thi.".Confused he asked,"Maine Shivani ki kab help ki?".Prerna explained,"Anurag, tumhe pretend karne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai.Shivi ne mujhe sab Kuch Bata diya ki kaise tumne aur usne plan karke Ronit ko Kolkata se bahar nikala.".Stunned, Anurag said,"Oh".

"Oh",Prerna repeated.Anurag was at a loss of words.Things had just started between him and Prerna.He didn't want her to misunderstand him.He was about to say something in his defense when she hugged him.She said,"I am so sorry, uss waqt maine tumhe itna galat samjha, jab ki tum to bas Meri behen ki madad kar rahe the.". Anurag was completely taken aback by her words.He had expected her to get angry at him for hiding the truth from her, like she had done when she found out the real reason behind his and Komolika's wedding.As Prerna broke the hug Anurag asked,"Tum mujhse iss baat ke liye naraaz nahi ho?".Prerna sighed, before saying,"Main shuru mein tumse gussa thi lekin mere parivaar ki madad karne ke liye main tumse naraaz nahi ho sakti(shaking her head) kabhi nahi.Shivi ne mujse madad maangi thi aur(tearing up) main kuch nahi kar paayi....Agar woh Ronit Shivi ko koi nuksaan pohochata toh main apne aap ko kabhi maaf nahi kar paati.". Wiping her tears, Aurag pacified her, "Prerna, Shivani meri bhi family hai, main usse kabhi Kuch nahi hone deta.Aur rahi baat tumhare Kuch na karne ki, madad chahe main karu yaa tum baat toh ek hi hai na.Tum please ab iss baat to lekar guilty feel mat karo.Jo hogaya usse bhool jao.Aur tumhi ne toh abhi abhi mujhse kaha ki inn teen mahino ko ek bura sapna samaj kar bhool jana chahiye....Toh please Jo bhi hua usse bhool jao.Ok?".Prerna gave him a small smile.Anurag smiled back at her before saying,"Chalo ab so jaate hai bohot raat ho chuki hai".Taking her hand, Anurag led her the bedroom.As Prerna lay on the bed, he gently tucked her in, and then headed to the sofa to sleep.

Before Prerna even opened her eyes, a sweet smile formed in her lips, as her nose caught the smell of got fresh tea near it. Prerna opened her eyes to find her husband gazing adoringly at her."Good morning, Mrs.Basu",he said,"Neend kaisi rahi aapki?".Anurag placed the breakfast tray on the nightstand before bending down to give a peck on her cheeks.Prerna smiled shyly as she got up and leaned against the headboard."Good morning",she said,"Kya baat hai?(gesturing towards the breakfast tray)Aaj biwi pe itna pyaar?Tumhe Kuch chahiye Kya?".Anurag joked back"Nahi, main bas tumhe yaad dilana chahta tha ki tum kitni lucky ho ki main tumhara pati hu.Yeh lo".He handed her a cup of tea.Taking a sip, Prerna made a noise of approval before saying,"In that case, main bohot hi lucky hu, yeh chai bohot kamaal ki hai.".Anurag smiled,"Thanks.".He tried to lean in for a kiss but Prerna stopped him,"Anurag",her tone had a hint of warning and playfulness,"Hume bachchon ko bhi uthaana hai",she reminded him.Anurag shook his head,"Woh toh nahi ho sakta.". Surprised,Prerna asked,"Kya?Kyu?".

Anurag replied"Kyuki Sweetheart..."he gently took the cup off her hands,and clasped his hands in hers before saying,"Main abhi abhi unhe school drop karke aaya hu.". "What?!",Prerna cried. Checking the time on Anurag's wristwatch she said,"Dus baj gaye?!Tumne mujhe pehle uthaaya Kyu nahi?Sneha aur Prem ne theekse naashta ko kia na?Aur tumhe office ke liye der nahi ho rahi?". Anurag replied,"Haan aur nahi.Sneha aur Prem ne achche se breakfast kiya.Aur maine office se chhutti li hai.". "Kyu?",Prerna asked surprised.Her workoholic husband was never absent from work unless it was an emergency."Kyuki",Anurag explained,"Aaj main saradin tumhare saath spend karne wala hu. Tum aaj Kal Ghar aur bachchon mein itni busy rehti ho ke mujhe tumhare saath time hi nahi milta.Iss liye maine socha Kyu na aaj hum ek date par jaaye.".

Prerna said,"Date par?".Anurag nodded,"Haan.Maine sab sochkar rakha hai.Hum breakfast ke baad shopping chalenge.Main chahta hu, ke tum humara date ke liye ekdum perfect dikho.Uske baad hum bachchon ko school se pick karke ek saath lunch karke wapas ghar aa jayenge". Prerna asked confused,"Tum bachchon ke saath mujhe date par le jaoge?".Anurag narrowed his eyes,"Shaadi ke dus saal ho gaye aur tum phir bhi mujhe kitna underestimate karti ho Mrs.Basu.". "Achcha?",Prerna asked amused. "Haan",Anurag explained,"Hum date par bachchon ke bedtime ke baad jayenge aur Kal subah unke uthne se pehle aa jayenge.Kal Saturday hai woh log toh Waise bhi late se uthenge". Now seriously curious, Prerna asked,"Anurag hum saari raat ke liye kaha ja rahe hai?".Anurag smiled slyly at her,"Well...woh toh tumhe aaj raat ko pata chal hi jayega Mrs.Basu.

Anyway (getting up) ab tum jaldi se breakfast karke ready ho jaao, main neeche tumhara wait kar raha hu.Ok?".Prerna gave him a shy smile,"Ok".As he left, Prerna smiled to herself.Ten years of married life with kids and he could make her feel like the most special woman in the world.

When Prerna opened her eyes, she had a smile on her face.That smile vanished when her eyes fell on the nightstand which had Anurag's picture but not the breakfast tray she had dreamt of.Getting up, leaning on the headboard she recollected what happened last night and what she had just dreamt of.Why couldn't she always have that life from the beginning?Why did things have to get complicated between them?She picked up Anurag's picture from the nightstand and said,"Jo maine dekha... kya yeh ab bhi sach ho sakta hai"?

"Kya Sach ho sakta hai?,a voice asked.Prerna looked up to see Anurag standing at the door holding a tray filled with food.
