@adventurousman: Actually Ranveer wasn't half bad as Khilji. Yeah he didn't get the blood boiling like Sanjay Dutt did in Agneepath or might do in this movie, but he was horrible enough that I wanted to strangle Khilji with my bare hands. I would say Ranveer was at least 50% what Sanjay Dutt was in Agneepath.
@ninny: Thing is that SLB has become synonymous with historicals. Yeah Bajirao Mastani was just a big grand love story, but the sets, the grandeur, the costumes, the VFX, etc. everything seems to have been translated here. I was looking for the Jodhaa Akbar style here. The subtle, the intricate, the realism. Like in JA, that climax battle wasn't some huge grand affair with thousands and thousands of people (mostly all VFX). It looked realistic but gave the feeling that there were thousands of people there. Or the romance between the lead pair. It was subtle, yet intricate. Hidden with so many details. SLB, on the other hand, does more in your face romance, over-the-top fight sequences, grand costumes, magnificent sets, etc. SLB really simplifies the history to make it easy to follow that anyone can follow without any background, while Ashutosh keeps the intricate details that you need narration to follow. But here it doesn't feel like that.
At the end of the day though, it comes down to the actors. This will not work. Arjun and Kriti just don't work in this. Arjun may have done a good job with the likes of Ishaqzaade and Gunday, but here's he stony-faced and emotionless. And Kriti seems to do a good job, but she just doesn't fit that time period or role. It seems so out of place.
