Oh that scene in the room before he takes her to the hospital.....I LOVE every moment of it.....it's just brilliantly natural performance and direction from the whole cast and crew.....what stayed with me was the way he kept saying, "beta" and "bas, bas....kuch nahin hoga" to her over and over to soothe her....she refused to drink water from his hand....but that didn't stop him from still trying to soothe her....she dug her nails into his hand as she convulsed with pain but all that while, his full focus was on trying to soothe her.....if that isn't parenting, then what is? Sab kuch bhool kar your child becomes the center of your world....bhook, pyaas, dard....nothing matters when you see your child writhing in pain.....the way he took charge in that scene sealed the deal.....he was her father from that moment on....he stepped up in every way.....and he stepped up for Babita too.
Confidence can falter from time to time but I wish they hadn't totally undone his confidence with the Imarti track.....sigh....it never came back to the levels of this hospital sequence.
Indeed, the screenplay was mind-blowing. Simple things like the his increasing fretting at seeing her writhing in pain, picking up her sandals and handing them to Babita so they could get walk her downstairs, the way NB picked up the broken glass to prevent accidents, the way he could no longer stand seeing her and put his foot down and just picked her up without caring what anyone would say or think. Sigh, and then of course the way he carried her down the stairs and tried to calm her down while she kicked her legs in pain, and buried her head in his shoulder when moments ago she didn't want to be anywhere near him and even refused the glass of water he offered. There was a promo that they never showed where he's sitting beside her in the taxi and she's holding on to him instead of Babita. It did seal the deal and then of course, sleeping on the hospital bench, the conversation in the hospital, the beloved "tu first hai" scene, and the mirroring scene when he picked her up and took her upstairs as she couldn't walk. He stepped up and really went above and beyond, never thinking about his comfort or inconvenience for a second. Even though they'd had a fallout before the hospital scene it never once came to his mind while he did everything for her. His heart was breaking at the thought of them leaving but he decided to back off because as her father he couldn't stand to see her unwell or in tears. He was in his element.
Later on, even after reconciling with Imarti's father, HS just chose to shut the door to his memories so that they stopped affecting his present. He didn't get closure and I don't think he will. They chose not to explore that side while we thought he would get over it with Babita's help, a notion which seems laughable now. I think they would have wanted him to learn to pick himself up but then feeling rejected by Babita, being unsure of himself, and the whole Amrit Manthan scene where he said something had died inside him... I do think something had indeed died and never recovered, and then all these issues with Minnie and his self-loathing at failing to trust her, followed by being made to feel a failure as a father, it destroyed his confidence completely. He's too scarred from his past and then got recent scars to boot.
