CHAPTER 10

EXT: On the road (evening)

Anurag and Prerna were way back home from Ananya’s home. Anurag was fully concentrated on the road and Prerna was busy looking at Anurag with so much love and respect in her eyes. As today she came to know that how good Anurag is from his heart. Obviously she knew it from before but today the respect she had for him increased to another level. Sonali told Prerna, how Anurag helped her in coming out from an abusive relationship and in getting divorce. And how he played an important role in helping Ananya to come out of all the trauma she went through at this small age. From that time, Sonali started tying rakhi to Anurag.  

Suddenly, Anurag looked at Prerna and found her looking at him. 

Anurag- “what happened?” This brought her out of her thoughts and she looked in his eyes. 

Prerna- “I am proud of you” Anurag smiled to this and in the meantime, he spotted ice-cream.

Anurag- “Ice-cream khaogi?” but before she could say anything. He parked the car at one side. Then they came out of the car and went to buy ice-cream.

Anurag- "konsa khaogi?" And started looking at the pamphlet hanging for variety. 

Prerna- "bachpann mein jaise hum orange candy khatey thein...vo phir se khaye?"

Anurag- "vo 10 rupay wali?" He said excitedly.

Prerna- "Haan (then she looked at the shopkeeper)...bhaiya 2 orange candy de dijiye" the shopkeeper gave her two orange candies. And for Anurag, the smile on Prerna's face was everything.

Now, even Prerna was happy that there is no one Anurag with whom he was romantically involved. So she thought to express her love to him as soon as possible. 

INT: Basu House, Anurag’s Room (evening)

Anurag has changed his clothes from three-piece suit to T-shirt and track pants. He sat on the chair with his laptop in front of him to do some work but suddenly his eyes fell on the photo frame having their (AnuPre) childhood photo. Within no time, his lips got curved into a smile. He remembered how they met at the airport, then coffee shop, and those times they spend together. 

When Anurag was completely lost in his own world, at that time, Anupam was passing by his room while humming a song. Anupam’s eyes fell on Anurag and he knocked on the door but there was no response from his side. So he walked towards Anurag and found him smiling and completely unaware of the surroundings. In the meantime, Nivedita came there with some files in her hand, she was about to call out for Anurag but she saw Anupam there, so walked up to him 

Nivedita- “what are you doing here?”

Anupam (whispered)- “shhhhhh...and look at him” Nivedita looked at Anurag and found him smiling. So, she called him out little loudly

Nivedita- “Anurag” this brought Anurag back from his dreamland. He looked with confused expression at both Nivi and Anupam.

Anurag- “aap dono yahan..kya hua??” Anupam smiled to him

Anurag- “aaplog kitni der se yahan ho?”

Anupam- “main SIRF dus minutes se yahan khada hun aur Nivi abhi do minutes pehle aayi hai…aur pata hai humne yahan aake kya dekha..”

Anurag- “kya?”

Nivedita- "you were smiling"

Anupam- "and tum kisi ke khayalon mein khoye huye thein"

Nivedita- "Anu, I didn't expect this from you. You have got a girlfriend and you didn't bother to tell me"

Anurag- "Nivi di, there is nothing like that...okay"

Anupam- "Aisa nahi toh kaisa hai??...Kisiiiii...deal ke baare mein soch kar muskura rahe thein??"

Nivedita- "now... it's enough, Anu...tell me who is that girl" Anurag was about to say something, but Anupam interrupted in between.

Anupam- "usse kya puch rahi ho….even I can tell you her name?" Nivedita shifted her eyes from Anurag to Anupam. 

Anurag (thinking)- “whom he is thinking of?” 

Anupam- “Anddd...the name of the girl issssss…...Prerna” 

Nivedita- “okay Prerna...Prerna….WHAT” Anurag first gave a look to Anupam and shifted to face Nivedita

Anurag- “Nivi di”

Nivedita- “Anu, is it true?” Anurag took a deep breath and took a few steps forward such that now Anurag’s back was facing Nivedita and Anupam’s front

Anurag- “haan..di ye sach hai...I love Prerna” Nivedita walked up to Anurag and held him by his shoulder

Nivedita- “Anu..are you even realising ki tum kya bol rahe ho….”

Anurag- “Di...do you find anything wrong with Prerna...she is just perfect…”

Nivedita- “Anu..it’s not about what I think...it’s all about what mom thinks..” Now Anupam also walked up to Anurag who was standing at some distance and listening their convo. 

Anupam- “Nivi thik keh rahi hai...shayad hum sab maan jaaye par...sasu maa nahi manegi...and I think you also know this..”

Anurag- “par main yeh bhi jaanta hun maa mujhse kitna pyaar karti hai...vo meri khushi ko samjhengi aur Prerna ko bhi apnayengi...aur kal subhah hote hi main maa se baat karunga..” and left the room

Nivedita- “I just hope...Maa Anu ke pyaar ko apne zid ke aage rakhe..”

Anupam- “she will...kyuki vo Anu se bahut pyaar karti hai...btw tumhe...Prerna kaisi lagti hai..”

Nivedita- “she is a nice girl...aur vo Anu ki pasand hai..it means she is perfect..” Nivedita and Anupam smiled.

INT: Prerna’s Room

Mohini came there with a box in her hand. She knocked on the door but there was no response from inside, so she opened the door and walked in. she found the room empty. So she kept the box on the bed and was about to leave when a diary accidently fell down because of her which was on the side table. She bent down to pick the diary when a childhood photograph of AnuPre caught her attention. She then flipped some pages and started reading. 

Suddenly she heard the noise of unlocking of the door. She immediately closed the diary and kept it on the side table. Prerna came out of the washroom after taking a bath. She was taken aback to see Mohini there.

Prerna- “Kaki maa..aap yahan..”

Mohini- “vo...Moloy ne tumhare liye ye bheja tha” and looked in the direction of the box. Prena smiled and walked up to Mohini.

Mohini- “aur mujhe bhi tumse kuch baat karni thi…” 

Prerna- “haan boliye na..”

Mohini- “yahan baitho (she made her sit on the bed and sat beside her)...main jaanti hun tum aur Anurag bahut ache dost ho. Aur mera Anu to dil ka itna acha hai ki vo sabse ache se baat karta hai..”

Prerna- “Kaki maa...aap kya kehna chahti hai”

Mohini- “Kuch rishtey dosti tak rahe toh hi ache hai. Aur ab main mere Anu ke liye duniya ki best ladki laana chahti hun, jo status, education, culture har tareeke se hume match kar sake…” Prerna somehow understood what Mohini was trying to say

Prerna- “toh Kaki Maa….aap mujhse kya chahti hai?”

Mohini- “main chahti hun ki tum mere Anu ki zindagi se DUR CHALI JAO...kunki main nahi chahti tumhara koi bhi influence uspe rahe..” Prerna’s got filled with tears, she stood up and walked a little. Now Prerna’s back was facing Mohini’s front

Prerna- “mere yahan hone se kya farq padega..” Mohini stood up from the bed

Mohini- “shayad tumhari dosti se koi farq nahi padega..but tumhare PYAAR se padega..” Prerna immediately looked at Mohini 

Prerna- “Kaki maa...aisa kuch bhi nahi hai..” Mohini picked up that diary from the table

Mohini- “toh iss dairy mein jo bhi likha hai vo sab jhuth hai..??...bolo” now Prerna knew there was nothing left to say because everything that was written in the diary was the truth of her life. 

Mohini- “Dekho Prerna...main koi explanation nahi chahti hun...main bas chahti hun ki tum kal subhah hotey hi yahan se chali jao (Prerna immediately looked at Mohini)...aur waise bhi tum parso toh jaane hi waali thi..toh kal hi sahi….Mere liye nahi toh apne uss bachpan ki dosti ke liye hi sahi…” and then she threw the diary on the bed and went from there. 

Prerna fell down on the floor and started crying. She had flashes of her childhood, airport, cafe, Ananya calling her mami and then ice cream. And she slowly laid down on the floor and gradually she fell asleep.

CHAPTER 11 

INT: The terrace (night)

The place was decorated with white curtains. The floor was covered with red balloons. In the centre, there was a round table with two chairs. The table was covered with a white satin cloth. On the table, there was a bottle of champagne with two wine glasses and a very big rose bouquet in the centre of the table. 

And there entered the women for whom all those arrangements were done, Prerna. Prerna was wearing a black saree paired with a silver earring and did a minimal make up. She walked up to the table and looked around, happiness was clearly visible on her face. A soothing music was playing in the background. And to add to her beauty, the wind blew, making her hair swing. It was like, her hair were dancing to the music in the background. 

Suddenly she felt a hand on her bare waist. She smiled a little as she understood who was the person. 

Prerna- “Anurag” Anurag smiled and twirled her. Now she was facing him. He pulled her closer to him and sensuously tucked the hair strands behind her ears. 

Anurag- “I wanna say something..”

Prerna- “hmmm..bolo” 

Anurag kneeled down and took her hand in his. He took a deep breath

Anurag- “mujhe umar bhar jhelna pasand karogi?” Prerna smiled and she was about to say something when Anurag’s phone rang and he irritatingly picked up the call. 

Anurag- “hello, Kaun?”

Mr. Malhotra- “sir main Malhotra..Aap so rahe hai..?” and Anurag immediately opened his eyes and realised it was his dream.

INT: Anurag’s Room

Anurag sat on the bed with an irritated look

Anurag- “Haan Mr. Malhotra boliye”

Mr. Malhotra- “Sir, aapki..London wale client ke saath meeting hai..”

Anurag- “thik hai main thodi der mein office aa raha hun..” and disconnected the call. 

He remembered his dream and smiled on himself and slapped on his head.

Anurag- “Anurag tujhe pehle maa se baat karni hai…” he then jumped off the bed and went inside the washroom. 

INT: Corridor

Anurag was walking through the corridor when he found the door of Prerna’s room slightly open. He knocked on the door but there was no response from inside. So, he peeped in his head and looked around, but there was no one. He stepped inside the room and called for Prerna. He knocked the bathroom’s door but it was already open. 

He was not able to understand why, but he was not having a good feeling in his heart. He felt like something wrong is happening. Now, even that room didn’t feel homely to him.He started searching for Prerna in all other rooms. By that time, everyone at home knew that she was not at home. 

Everyone was sitting in the drawing room except Mohini and Moloy. Moloy was out of station due to some meeting. 

Anurag was continuously walking back and forth. Simultaneously, he was trying to call Prerna’s number but her phone was switched off. In the meantime, Mohini came back home. Anurag looked at her and immediately walked towards her and hugged her. 

Mohini- “what happened?”

Anurag- “maa...Prerna is not at home. I am afraid, is she fine?” 

Mohini remembered everything she said a night before to Prerna, “main bas chahti hun ki tum kal subhah hotey hi yahan se chali jao”. Mohini had a satisfied smile on her face which doesn’t go unnoticed by Nivedita. Mohini broke the hug and looked at Anurag 

Mohini- “may be she went back to her home” Anurag looked at her for a few seconds and closed his eyes. 

He went back in time when he was standing in Prerna’s room. There everything was perfectly done and then his eyes fell on the corner where her airbag used to be kept. The airbag was missing. 

Anurag immediately opened his eyes and ran towards Prerna’s room. 

Anupam- “Kya hua Anu?” and ran behind him. And Nivedita walked towards Mohini. 

Nivedita- “Why did you do this?”

Mohini- “What have I done?”

Nivedita- “that satisfied smile on your face when Anu told you that Prerna is not at home. Maa I know you very well..(Mohini looked at Nivedita)...why did you do this?” and with a disgusted look she went from there.

INT: Prerna’s room

Whole room was messed up. Anurag was sitting on the bed. Cupboard was open and it was empty. Anupam was sitting beside Anurag. In the meantime, Nivedita entered the room. 

Nivedita- “Anu…” and she walked up to him. 

Anurag- “Di..Prerna ghar chhod kar chali gayi hai..par kyu uski ticket toh kal ki thi..phir kyu..(then he stood up from his place)..uske ghar par sab kuch thik toh hoga na...Haan yahi hoga...warna vo aise kabhi nahi jaati..Pakka koi aisi baat hui hai...jisne usse majboor kar diya hai” In the meantime, Mohini also came there. Nivedita looked at her and then moved her gaze to Anurag.

Nivedita- “Anu..”

Anurag- “ek baar main uske ghar par phone karke pata karta hun..” and he just took out his phone

Nivedita- “Anu..stop...before calling at her home why don’t you ask mom about Prerna” Mohini looked at Nivedita and Anurag

Anurag- “aap kya keh rahe ho di...how mom will know about Prerna” Nivedita walked up to Mohini

Nivedita- “Maa...Anu ko batayiye ki aapne aisa kya kaha Prerna se that she left the home…and please maa...no lies” Anurag walked up to Mohini and held her firmly by her shoulder

Anurag- “maa...aap janti hai kya Prerna Kahan hai..?” Mohini looked away

Mohini- “how will I know..??”

Anurag- “maa..mere taraf dekhiye..(Mohini looked at Anurag)..please maa. ”

Mohini- “Anu...you know na...how much I love you”

Anurag- “haan maa….but maa...where is Prerna??” 

Mohini- “you sit here” she made Anurag sit on the bed and then she sat beside him.

Mohini- “tum jaante ho na ki main tumse kitna pyaar karti hun...aur jo bhi karungi vo tumhare bhalayi ke liye hi karungi. Dekho Anu (she took his hand in hers)..humara ek standard hai...aur main chahti hun ki tum kisi aise insaan ke saath raho jo uss standard ko match kar sake….mujhe tumhari aur Prerna ki dosti se koi problem nahi hai. Aur (Mohini stood up from her place and walked forward) mujhe kal raat ko pata chala ki Prerna tumse pyaar karti hai (Anurag immediately looked at her. His eyes were moist). Anu tum itne ache ho ki, tum uski baaton mein bhi aa jaate. Yeh chote log hote hi aise hai” 

Listening this Anurag shouted.

Anurag- “MAA” Mohini turned and looked at Anurag.

Mohini- “ Anu…” Anurag walked forward towards his mom and gave her a smile.

Anurag- “maa jinhe aap chote log keh rahi hai na...aaj unhi ke wajah se hum log aaj iss jagah hai...aapko toh sab pata hai. Aur haan jis ladki ki aap baat kar rahi hai, aapko pata hai..how much she respects you? Uss ladki ne ghar par, humare saath rehne se mana kar diya just because you don’t like them. And mom ye kaisa discrimination hai, pehle hum bhi toh aise thein. AB humare paas paisa hai, naam hai, shawhrat hai. Kis baat ka ghamand hai maa? Aur jis ladki ko aap pasand nahi karti hai na, aaj usi ladki ke wajah se main yahan aapke saamne khada hun (Mohini with moist eyes gave him a confused expression)...Haan maa Prerna ki wajah se hi main wapas India aaya hun. Mujhe London mein ek bahut achi opportunity mili thi but pata nahi India se dur rehne ke khayal se bhi aisa lagta tha ki Prerna se dur ho jaunga. Aur haan maa...sirf Prerna nahi main bhi usse bahut pyaar karta hun...uss ladki ne toh aaj tak mujhe bataya tak nahi ki vo mujhse pyaar karti hai. Batana toh chod dijiye maa...kisi tareeke ka hint tak nahi diya…. Shayad isiliye kyuki use lagta hoga ki aap nahi manegi. Usne aapki khushi ko sabse upar rakha”

Mohini- “Anu”

Anurag- “pata hai maa....kal jab Nivi di ko pata chala ki main Prerna se pyaar karta hun...toh unhone kaha ki aap nahi manegi. Par mujhe pura bharosa tha...ki aap meri khushi ko samjhengi..but I failed...But sorry mom, main Prerna se bahut pyaar karta hun. Bahut intezaar kiya hai maine aur main usse wapas lekar aaunga..” and walked towards the main door.

Anurag stopped on his way and looked at Mohini who was standing still with tears in her eyes. 

Anurag- “Mom, I just wish today you don’t lose your son” 

Anurag slammed the door behind him and went from there.
